The 2023 Soul Train Music Awards took place on November 26, 2023, recognizing the best in soul, R&B and Hip-Hop music. The ceremony will air on BET and BET Her. [3] On November 1, 2023, BET announced the nominees, SZA, Usher and Summer Walker led with nine nominations each; followed by 21 Savage with eight; and Coco Jones and Victoria Monét each having received six nominations. Jidenna Theodore Mobisson, known mononymously as Jidenna, is an American rapper and singer. He signed with Janelle Monáe's record label Wondaland Arts Society, an imprint of Epic Records to release his debut single, "Classic Man" in 2015. The song peaked at number 22 on the Billboard Hot 100, received double platinum certification by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), and was followed up with the single "Yoga" that same year. Both of which preceded the release of Wondaland's debut compilation project, The Eephus (2015). Jidenna's debut studio album, The Chief (2017) peaked at number 38 on the Billboard 200. His second album, 85 to Africa (2019) explored the afro fusion musical style.

Victoria Monét McCants is an American R&B and pop singer and songwriter. She became involved in performing arts at a young age, and later pursued a musical career in 2010. She soon took to songwriting and began working with record producer Rodney Jerkins—whose productions she would frequently co-write—and his affiliate, D'Mile. As a recording artist, Monét released a series of extended plays (EPs) independently throughout the mid-late 2010s before releasing her fifth EP Jaguar (2020) to critical acclaim. Her debut studio album, Jaguar II (2023) became her commercial breakthrough as it included the hit single "On My Mama". The song peaked within the top 50 of the Billboard Hot 100 and earned a Grammy Award nomination for Record of the Year; Monét earned a total of seven nominations at the 66th Annual Grammy Awards, including Best New Artist.

The album was preceded by two singles: "Float" featuring Seun Kuti and Egypt 80 in February 2023 and "Lipstick Lover" in May. The album was announced alongside the issue of the second single, which Monáe first previewed at their Met Gala after-party.
