The Thundering Herd finished 9-1-6 in the regular season, including 4-0-5 in conference play to finish 2nd in the conference. The Herd would advance to the SBC Conference Tournament Championship game in Morgantown, WV versus West Virginia. The final was a draw after extra time, but WVU claimed the tournament title with a 6-5 win in penalties. The Herd finished the season ranked 8th in the RPI but was awarded the 13th seed in the NCAA Tournament. Marshall would win two games at home in the NCAA Tournament against Furman and NC State before traveling to Dallas to face SMU in the quarterfinals. The Herd emerged victorious, 3-2, and earned the program's second ever birth to the College Cup.

The Herd faced the #1 overall seed Ohio State in the national semifinals. Tarik Pannholzer scored on an open goal in the 7th minute, and the Thundering Herd held for the remainder of the game to secure the 1-0 victory and a place in the national championship game versus Vermont. In the second half of the national title game, Tarik Pannholzer again scored in the 67th minute to put Marshall up 1-0. However, a failed clearance allowed Vermont to gain the equalizer with 9 minutes remaining in regulation. Marshall would surrender a goal early in overtime and would finish the 2024 season as national runner-ip.
