José Daniel Ortega Saavedra is a Nicaraguan politician and the 58th president of Nicaragua since January 10, 2007. Previously, he was leader of Nicaragua from July 18, 1979 to April 25, 1990, first as Coordinator of the Junta of National Reconstruction from July 19, 1979 to January 10, 1985, and then as the 54th President from January 10, 1985 to April 25, 1990. During his first term, he implemented policies to achieve leftist reforms across Nicaragua. In later years, Ortega's left-wing radical politics cooled significantly, leading him to pursue pro-business policies and even rapprochement with the Catholic Church. However, in 2022, Ortega resumed repression of the Church, and has imprisoned prelate Rolando José Álvarez Lagos.

Under the rule of President Hugo Chávez who was elected President of Venezuela in 1998, relations between Israel and Venezuela rapidly deteriorated as Venezuela strongly supported the rights of the Palestinians and condemned Israeli actions, twice expelling the Israeli ambassador from Venezuela. Venezuela officially recognized the State of Palestine and established diplomatic relations with the Palestinian Authority on 27 April 2009.
Israel and Mauritania relations refers to the historic and current bilateral relationship between Israel and Mauritania. Mauritania declared war on Israel as part of the Six Day War. In 1999, Mauritania became the third member of the Arab League—after Egypt and Jordan—to recognize Israel as a sovereign state. Palestine–Ukraine relations are bilateral relations between the State of Palestine and Ukraine. The Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic recognized Palestinian independence on 19 November 1988. Palestine recognized Ukraine as a sovereign state in February 1992. On 2 November 2001, the two countries established diplomatic relations and the Palestinian embassy opened the same day. Ukraine has supported UN resolutions against Israel's occupation of the Palestinian territories.
Rolando José Álvarez Lagos is a Nicaraguan prelate of the Catholic Church. He has served as the Bishop of Matagalpa since 2011 and apostolic administrator of Estelí since 2021. He is a longtime opponent of the Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega. In February 2023, after being held under house arrest for six months, he refused to join a group of political prisoners released into U.S. custody and was sentenced for treason to 26 years in prison. He was exiled to Vatican City in January 2024.
The Israel–Hamas war sparked a major diplomatic crisis, with many countries around the world reacting strongly to the conflict that affected the momentum of regional relations. At least nine countries took the drastic step of recalling their ambassadors and cutting diplomatic ties with Israel. The conflict has also resulted in a renewed focus on a two-state solution to the ongoing conflict.
Bishop Isidoro del Carmen Mora Ortega is a Nicaraguan Roman Catholic prelate. He has been serving as the Bishop of Siuna since 8 April 2021. He is an opponent of the Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega. From December 2023 he was held under arrest. On 14 January 2024, Bishop Mora was exiled to Vatican City.
