The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation election, 2025 is an election of members to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation which governs Greater Mumbai, the largest city in India. The election dates are yet to be announced by the state election commission and could be held in 2025.

Background

Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) after the civic elections 2017 will now be with Nine new wards, three are in urban areas, three in western suburbs and three in eastern suburbs. The three wards in the city are Worli, Parel and Byculla, Bandra, Andheri, Dahisar in the western suburbs, Kurla, Chembur and Govandi in the eastern suburbs. overall will now be with 236 corporators. 127 seats is the reserved for women, out of which belonging to Scheduled Castes 8 seats reserved for women and 1 for woman belonging to Scheduled Tribes. There will be 118 seats for open Castes women total 219 seats will be for open group. 15 seats Scheduled Castes and 2 seats Scheduled Tribes will be reserved. [1]

Four-member Ward System in Maharashtra Municipal Corporations (Except BMC)

The Maharashtra government has implemented a new four-member ward system for most municipal corporations in the state, with the exception of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). While the ruling parties say that this action will improve democracy, the opposition has expressed worries about the delay in civic elections and asked why the administration has not approached the court to speed up the election process.

Mumbai Climate Action Plan, a state-government initiative, was established in 2021 to tackle and solve the increasing challenges of climate change. It was officially launched in March 2022. This Planning process was unveiled by the former Environment Minister of Maharashtra, Aaditya Thackeray in September 2021 after Mumbai joined the C40 Cities Network in December 2020. The six key action areas and strategies laid out in this plan are: Sustainable Waste Management, Urban greening & biodiversity, Urban flooding & water resource management, Energy & buildings, Air quality and Sustainable Mobility.

Delhi Municipal Corporation (Amendment) Bill, 2022 is the legislation introduced and approved in Parliament of India and subsequently by President. The system of Municipal Corporation was introduced in India during British Rule with formation of municipal corporation in Madras (Chennai) in 1688 followed by municipal corporations in Bombay (Mumbai) and Calcutta (Kolkata) by 1762. The system was followed later in other states by passing the respective Municipal Corporation Bill in each state to become law.
