The 2016 Women's World Ice Hockey Championships were the 18th such series of tournaments organized by the International Ice Hockey Federation. Teams participated at several levels of competition. These tournaments also served as qualifications for the 2017 competition and finalized seeding for the 2018 Winter Olympics qualification.

The 2017 IIHF U18 World Championship was the 19th IIHF World U18 Championship and was hosted by Poprad and Spišská Nová Ves, Slovakia. The tournament was played from 13 to 23 April 2017. Finland entered the tournament as the defending champions and once again advanced to the final, but this time they lost to the United States.
The 2017 IIHF Women's U18 World Championship was the tenth Women's U18 World Championship in ice hockey. The tournament was played in Přerov and Zlín, Czech Republic. For the third straight year the United States defeated Canada for the gold, winning their sixth title overall. Russia defeated Sweden for the bronze, reversing the outcome of the previous year.

Divisions I A and I B represent the second and third tier of the World Junior Ice Hockey Championships. To be eligible as a "junior" a player couldn't be born earlier than 1997.

The 2018 IIHF Women's U18 World Championship was the 11th Women's U18 World Championship in ice hockey. It was played at the Ice Palace in Dmitrov, Russia from 6 to 13 January 2018. The USA won for the seventh time, for the first time defeating someone other than Canada in the gold medal game. Sweden took silver, while Canada took bronze beating host Russia. The Russians beat Canada in the preliminary round, marking another first.

The 2025 IIHF World Championship will be co-hosted by Stockholm, Sweden, and Herning, Denmark, from 9 to 25 May 2025. This decision regarding Sweden was made at the 2018 semi-annual International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) congress in Malta, and was officially announced on 24 May 2019, at the IIHF's annual congress during the World Championships in Bratislava, Slovakia. At the same time, it was announced that Denmark would co-host the championship.
