The 22nd Golden Raspberry Awards were held on March 23, 2002 at the Abracadabra Theater at Magicopolis in Santa Monica, California, to recognize the worst the movie industry had to offer in 2001. In a break with Razzie tradition, Tom Green accepted his five awards in person for Freddy Got Fingered , entertaining attendees via supplying his own red carpet and playing a never-ending harmonica piece. The Golden Raspberry Awards is a parody award show honoring the worst of cinematic "failures". Co-founded by UCLA film graduates and film industry veterans John J. B. Wilson and Mo Murphy, the Razzie Awards' satirical annual ceremony is preceded by its opposite, the Academy Awards, by four decades. The term raspberry is used in its irreverent sense, as in "blowing a raspberry". The statuette itself is a golf ball-sized raspberry atop a Super 8mm film reel atop a 35-millimeter film core with brown wood shelf paper glued and wrapped around it—sitting atop a jar lid spray-painted gold, with an estimated street value of $4.97. The Golden Raspberry Foundation has claimed that the award "encourages well-known filmmakers and top-notch performers to own their bad."
Freddy Got Fingered is a 2001 American-Canadian surreal black comedy film directed by Tom Green in his feature film directorial debut and written by Green and Derek Harvie. Green stars in the film as a childish slacker who wishes to become a professional cartoonist while dealing with his abusive father's behavior. Its plot resembles Green's struggles as a young man trying to get his television series picked up, which would later become the MTV series The Tom Green Show. The title of the film refers to a plot point where Green's character falsely accuses his father of sexually abusing his brother, the eponymous Freddy.
The Green Mile is a 1999 American fantasy drama film written and directed by Frank Darabont and based on Stephen King's 1996 novel of the same name. The 25th Golden Raspberry Awards, or Razzies, were held on February 26, 2005, at the Ivar Theatre in Hollywood, California, to honor the worst films the film industry had to offer in 2004. To celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Golden Raspberry Awards, four special categories—Worst Razzie Loser of Our First 25 Years, Worst "Comedy" of Our First 25 Years, Worst "Drama" of Our First 25 Years, and Worst "Musical" of Our First 25 Years—were created.
