Criticism

Nominations

Prior to the ceremony, the Razzies were heavily criticized for overlooking critically panned performances and films, including He's All That and Thunder Force among others, while also nominating mostly unknown films, such as Karen, that also received criticism for its inclusion for Worst Remake, Rip-off or Sequel described as an "Inadvertent Remake of Cruella" despite the lack of any real similarity between the two films. [7] They also received criticism for lacking actual actor couples in the Worst Screen Combo category and its inclusion for performances by Ben Affleck in the critically acclaimed film The Last Duel and Jared Leto in House of Gucci for Worst Supporting Actor; [8] both performances were nominated, with Leto winning the award. Conversely, Leto received nominations for Best Supporting Actor from the Critics Choice Association [9] and Screen Actors Guild. [10] A reviewer for the website The Avocado was particularly critical of Affleck's nomination, stating that he "gave one of the year's best performances" in The Last Duel, writing: "Was it silly? Of course it was and it was perfect for the role." [8] The same reviewer also criticized Leto's nomination, writing that he "doesn't deserve to be on here either" and arguing that he was "perfectly cast as a pathetic little moron that's in over his head" in House of Gucci. The Razzies are truly sorry for #BruceWillis diagnosed condition. Perhaps this explains why he wanted to go out with a bang in 2021. Our best wishes to Bruce and family.

March 31, 2022 [11]

This year introduced a special category, "Worst Performance by Bruce Willis in a 2021 Movie", which consisted of all eight films Willis appeared in throughout 2021. [12] On March 30, 2022, Willis's family announced he was retiring from acting following an aphasia diagnosis, which resulted in the category incurring criticism as being insensitive. The Razzies originally stood by their decision, tweeting "perhaps this explains why he wanted to go out with a bang in 2021. Our best wishes to Bruce and family". [13] They later rescinded the award in the wake of public backlash, stating "If someone's medical condition is a factor in their decision making and/or their performance, we acknowledge that it is not appropriate to give them a Razzie". [6]

Notes

  1. Following Willis' aphasia diagnosis in March 2022, the category and its nominations were rescinded by the Golden Raspberry Foundation. [6] For more information, refer to § Worst Performance by Bruce Willis in a 2021 Movie.

The Golden Raspberry Awards is a parody award show honoring the worst of cinematic failures. Co-founded by UCLA film graduates and film industry veterans John J. B. Wilson and Mo Murphy, the Razzie Awards' satirical annual ceremony is preceded by its opposite, the Academy Awards, by four decades. The term raspberry is used in its irreverent sense, as in "blowing a raspberry". The statuette itself is a golf ball-sized raspberry atop a Super 8mm film reel atop a 35-millimeter film core with brown wood shelf paper glued and wrapped around it—sitting atop a jar lid spray-painted gold. The Golden Raspberry Foundation has claimed that the award "encourages well-known filmmakers and top-notch performers to own their bad."

The 1st Golden Raspberry Awards were held on March 31, 1981, at founder John J. B. Wilson's living room alcove to recognize the worst the film industry had to offer in 1980. For it was a double feature of Can't Stop the Music, winner of Worst Picture, and Xanadu that inspired Wilson to start the Razzies. Each category included as many as ten nominees; the maximum was lowered to five the following year to mirror the Oscars. "There was a fake stage in John's apartment," remembers Maureen Murphy, who was a presenter.

The 13th Golden Raspberry Awards were held on March 28, 1993, at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel to recognize the worst the movie industry had to offer in 1992. Shining Through and Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot each won three Razzies, though the latter wasn't nominated for Worst Picture. Tom Selleck did not attend the ceremony and later accepted his award on The Chevy Chase Show.

The Golden Raspberry Award for Worst Picture is a prize at the annual Razzies to the worst film of the past year. Over the 39 ceremonies that have taken place, 202 films have been nominated for Worst Picture, with three ties resulting in 42 winners.

The Razzie Award for Worst Actor is an award presented at the annual Golden Raspberry Awards to the worst actor of the previous year. The following is a list of nominees and recipients of that award, along with the film(s) for which they were nominated.

The 26th Golden Raspberry Awards, or Razzies, were held on March 4, 2006, at the Ivar Theatre in Hollywood, California to honor the worst films the film industry had to offer in 2005. The nominations for the Golden Raspberry Awards were announced on January 30, 2006. The most nominated film of the year was Son of the Mask with eight nominations, followed by The Dukes of Hazzard with seven, Dirty Love with six, Deuce Bigalow: European Gigolo and Bewitched with five. The only picture to take home multiple penalties was Dirty Love, with four. The official press release announcing the 2005 winners proclaimed Dirty Love "...a little stinker that no one but [Razzie voters] even seem to know existed."

Razzie Award for Worst Actress is an award presented at the annual Golden Raspberry Awards to the worst actress of the previous year. Male actors performing in drag are eligible, as it is intended as a humorous award.

The actual nominations however, still had some connection to the Oscars ceremony, as they were announced the night before the Academy Awards were held.

The ceremony, the date of which was later announced to be March 14, 2020, was ultimately cancelled amid the concerns over the COVID-19 pandemic. The organizers announced the ceremony's winners online on March 16, 2020.
