The 25th Independence Anniversary Medal was issued to commemorate the historic occasion of 25 years of the independence of India. [2] [3]

Contents

Criteria

The medal was issued by the Government of India through a Presidential Notification for all personnel of -

a) Armed Forces (the Army, the Navy, the Air Force, of any other Reserve Forces, Territorial Army, J & K Militia and any other armed forces of the Union), and

b) All ranks of the Railway Protection Force, Police Forces, Home Guards, Civil Defence Organisation and any other organisation specified bv the Government. [3] [4]

Design

Medal

The medal is circular in shape and made of cupro-nickel. It is 35 mm in diameter and will be fitted to a ring. It will have the Lion Capital of Ashoka and the motto on the front. It will have the inscriptions पच्चीसवीं स्वतंत्रता जयंती मेडल (Pachisvi swatantrata jayanti medal) and 25th Independence Anniversary Medal on either side of the State Emblem along the rim.

The reverse of the medal shall be embossed a replica of Ashoka’s Chakra in the centre with inscription 1947 above and 1972 below it. [5]

Ribbon

The ribbon will be 32 mm in width and have the colours of national flag i.e. saffron, white and green in equal parts in the centre and of maroon colour of 10 mm each on either side. [3]

The Defense Meritorious Service Medal (DMSM) is an award bestowed upon members of the United States military by the United States Department of Defense. In the order of precedence of the United States Armed Forces, it is worn between the Purple Heart and the Meritorious Service Medal. The American Campaign Medal is a military award of the United States Armed Forces which was first created on November 6, 1942, by Executive Order 9265 issued by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. The medal was intended to recognize those military members who had performed military service in the American Theater of Operations during World War II. A similar medal, known as the American Defense Service Medal was awarded for active duty service before the United States' entry into World War II.

The Armed Forces Service Medal (AFSM) is a military award of the United States military that was created on January 11, 1996, by President Bill Clinton under Executive Order 12985. The Military Medal (MM) was a military decoration awarded to personnel of the British Army and other arms of the armed forces, and to personnel of other Commonwealth countries, below commissioned rank, for bravery in battle on land. The Ashoka Chakra is India's highest peacetime military decoration awarded for valor, courageous action, or self-sacrifice away from the battlefield. It is the peacetime equivalent of the Param Vir Chakra (PVC) and is awarded for the "most conspicuous bravery or some daring or pre-eminent valour or self-sacrifice" other than in the face of the enemy. The decoration may be awarded either to military or civilian personnel.

The Shaurya Chakra is an Indian military decoration awarded for valour, courageous action or self-sacrifice while not engaged in direct action with the enemy. It may be awarded to civilians as well as military personnel, sometimes posthumously. It is third in order of precedence of peacetime gallantry awards and comes after the Ashoka Chakra and the Kirti Chakra. It precedes the Yudh Seva Medal.[total recipients 2094]. The KirtiChakra is an Indian military decoration awarded for valour, courageous action or self-sacrifice away from the field of battle. It may be awarded to civilians as well as military personnel, including posthumous awards. It is the peacetime equivalent of the Maha Vir Chakra. It is second in order of precedence of peacetime gallantry awards, comes after Ashoka Chakra and before Shaurya Chakra. Before 1967, the award was known as the Ashoka Chakra, Class II.

The Jubilee Medal "40 Years of the Armed Forces of the USSR" was a state military commemorative medal of the Soviet Union established on December 18, 1957 by decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR to denote the fortieth anniversary of the creation of the Soviet Armed Forces. The Armed Forces of India are eligible for many military decorations awarded for extraordinary bravery and distinguished service during times of war and peace. Service and campaign medals have been awarded throughout India's history as an independent state.

The Siachen Glacier Medal is awarded for service in the Siachen conflict along India's northern border with Pakistan. Awarded to the Indian Air Force for Operation Meghdoot, in support of activities in support of troops serving in the Siachen Glacier area since April 1984.

The Sainya Seva Medal is a medal of the Indian Armed Forces. The medal is awarded in recognition of non-operational service under conditions of hardship and severe climate in specified areas.

The Videsh Seva Medal is a service medal of the Indian Armed Forces. It is presented to all ranks of the three services for services rendered outside India. It was instituted on 26 January 1960. It can also be awarded posthumously.
