The 28th Division was one of the divisions of the Spanish Republican Army that were organized during the Spanish Civil War on the basis of the Mixed Brigades. It was deployed on the Aragon and Segre fronts.
The unit was created in April 1937 from the old Ascaso Column, commanded by the anarchist Gregorio Jover. [1] [2] The new 28th Division, in addition to the forces coming from the «Ascaso» column, had also absorbed the remains of other militia forces and became composed of 125th, 126th and 127th mixed brigades; continued under Jover's command. [3] [4]
The 28th Division remained on the Aragon front for much of the war. In June 1937 it took part in the unsuccessful Huesca Offensive, and at the end of August one of its units - the 127th MB - took part in the Zaragoza Offensive. In February 1938 it took part in the Battle of Alfambra. During the subsequent offensive on the Aragon front, the unit undertook several withdrawals in the face of enemy pressure. It took part in the Levante Offensive integrated in the 13th Army Corps, [5] being later transferred to the Estremadura front, where it participated in the Battle of Merida pocket. After Gregorio Jover was promoted to command of the 10th Army Corps, on August 11 Juan Mayordomo Moreno took command of the division. [6] In January 1939, the unit participated in the Battle of Valsequillo, integrated into the Toral Group. [7]

The Central Region Army Group, Spanish: Grupo de Ejércitos de la Región Central (GERC), was a military formation of the Spanish Republican Army during the last phase of the Spanish Civil War. It gathered the most powerful section of the republican military and would endure until the 1939 surrender. The GERC was under the command of general José Miaja Menant, the Defence of Madrid hero.
The 45th Division was a division of the Spanish Republican Army in the Spanish Civil War.
The Eastern Army, also translated as the Army of the East, was a unit of the Spanish Republican Army that operated in the eastern part of Spain during the Spanish Civil War. Republican forces deployed on the Aragon front of the war initially came under the command structure of the unit. Later in the Civil War, the unit operated in Catalonia, defending the Republican defensive line along the Segre river.
The Harriers Column of the FAI, or Los Aguiluchos, was the last of the great Catalan anarcho-syndicalist columns. Later, more militias left Catalonia for the front, but they would no longer do so in the form of a column but rather as reinforcement units of the existing columns. This column was supposed to form a large unit - of around 10,000 combatants - but it ended up reinforcing the Ascaso Column as an autonomous column - with about 1,500 militiamen with 200 militiawomen. Organized in the Bakunin barracks in Barcelona, it was sent to the Huesca front on 28 August, with Juan García Oliver and Miguel García Vivancos leading the column.
