Sydney Film Festival

The 68th annual Sydney Film Festival was held from 3 to 21 November 2021. [1] The festival, which traditionally takes place in June, was postponed to August 2021 and eventually rescheduled to be held in November due to the COVID-19 pandemic. [2] The film screenings were staged as a "hybrid" of in-person and digital. [3] It marked as the first major festival following the lifting of the lockdown in New South Wales. [4]

Contents

Anthology film Here Out West opened the festival, while Wes Anderson's The French Dispatch was the closing film. [5] Drama film There Is No Evil won the most prestigious award, Sydney Film Prize. [6]

There Is No Evil is a 2020 Persian-language drama film directed and written by Mohammad Rasoulof. Banned in Iran, the film relates four stories concerning the death penalty in Iran. It had its world premiere at the 70th Berlin International Film Festival, where it won the Golden Bear.

Darren Dale is an Indigenous Australian film and television producer. He joined film production company Blackfella Films as a producer and later co-director, and as of August 2024 is managing director. Dale is known for co-producing many films and television series with Miranda Dear since 2010, with their most recent collaboration being the second season of Total Control.

Iranian Film Festival Australia (IFFA) is a film festival held in Australia with a focus on Iranian films. IFFA was founded in 2011 and is now in its tenth year. It is considered to be a key Iranian cultural event in Australia by many iranians. IFFA is the only nation-wide festival in Australia dedicated to Iranian films.

The 70th annual Sydney Film Festival was held from 7 to 18 June 2023. Warwick Thornton's drama film The New Boy opened the festival and James Mangold's action adventure film Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny was the closing film.

The 69th annual Sydney Film Festival was held from 8 to 19 June 2022. First Nations anthology film We Are Still Here opened the festival, while Hirokazu Kore-eda's drama film Broker was the closing film.

The 67th annual Sydney Film Festival was held from 10 to 21 June 2020. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the film screenings were held virtually for the first time. In contrast to the regular editions, the festival only held four programs: Australian documentaries, Europe: Voices of Women in Film, Screenability, and Australian Short Films. The festival was also held as a part of We Are One: A Global Film Festival, an international online film festival.

The 66th annual Sydney Film Festival was held from 5 to 16 June 2019. Comedy drama film Palm Beach opened the festival and musical romantic comedy film Yesterday was the closing film.

The 71st annual Sydney Film Festival was held from 5 to 16 June 2024. The festival opened with Paul Clarke's documentary film Midnight Oil: The Hardest Line, and closed with Coralie Fargeat's horror film The Substance.
