The 74th annual Locarno Festival was held from 4 August to 14 August 2021 in Locarno, Switzerland. [1] The opening film of the festival was Beckett by Ferdinando Cito Filomarino, which had its world premiere on 4 August. [2] The 74th edition of Locarno Film Festival hosted 14 films including 7 world premieres in Piazza Grande among which half were European productions. [3] [4] More than 75,000 spectators attended the festival. 50% less than the attendance rate in 2019 before the COVID-19 pandemic. [5]

Events

Rotonda by la Mobiliare - Come together!

This event will be held from 30 July to 14 August. It is Locarno Film Festival’s communal space, which embraces existing audience and greets new people. It will have following platforms:

Locarno Talks la Mobiliare

During the course of the film festival, it will be a stage for exchanging and debating ideas and perspectives. It will have encounters with people from the world of art, photography, cinema music, politics and science.

Cinema and Youth

This is an initiative open to 28 final year students of high school or vocational school of Switzerland and Northern Italy, aged between 18 and 23. They will be privileged viewers as they may watch the screenings, meet directors and actors/actresses, attend specially organized introductory lectures on film language. In addition they will have access to the sidebar events.

The Leopard of Honour is a life's work achievement award at the Locarno International Film Festival held annually in Locarno, Switzerland. The award has been given out since 1989. The award especially denotes recognition of auteur cinema and creative and audacious filmmaking. Starting 2009 the prize was named in Italian and after its sponsor, becoming the "Pardo d'onore Swisscom".

The Golden Leopard is the top prize at the Locarno International Film Festival, an international film festival held annually in Locarno, Switzerland since 1946. Directors in the process of getting an international reputation are allowed to be entered in the competitive selection. The winning films are chosen by a jury. The award went under many names until it was named the Golden Leopard in 1968. The festival was not held in 1951 and the prize was not awarded in 1956 and 1982. As of 2009 René Clair and Jiří Trnka are the only two directors to have won the award twice, both of them winning in consecutive years.

Edwin is an Indonesian film director, producer, and screenwriter. He has won a total of four Citra Awards: Best Short Film for Kara, Anak Sebatang Pohon (2005), Best Director for Posesif (2017), as well as Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay for Vengeance is Mine, All Others Pay Cash (2022). His feature film debut Blind Pig Who Wants to Fly (2008) earned critical acclaim and won several international festival awards. In 2012, Edwin received the Edward Yang New Talent Award at the 6th Asian Film Awards.

Vengeance Is Mine, All Others Pay Cash is a 2021 Indonesian black comedy action drama film directed by Edwin who also co-wrote the screenplay with Eka Kurniawan based on Kurniawan's best-selling book of the same name. The film had its world premiere in August 2021 at the 74th Locarno Film Festival, where it won the top prize of Golden Leopard for Best Film.

The film is a disaster movie which combines satirical and surreal elements. Starring Daniel Padilla, Rans Rifol, and Charo Santos-Concio, the film is set against the backdrop of the devastation caused by the 2013 Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines. The film is a joint production by Black Sheep Productions, Globe Studios, and Dreamscape Entertainment.

<i>Critical Zone</i> 2023 film by Ali Ahmadzadeh

Critical Zone is a 2023 drama film written and directed by Ali Ahmadzadeh. The film, which features non-professonionl actors, tells of the everyday life of a drug dealer navigating Tehran's underworld. It is a co-production between Iran and Germany and was shot in secret without permission from Iranian authorities. It premiered on 10 August 2023 at the Locarno Film Festival, where it won the Golden Leopard. Ahmadzadeh was pressured by Iranian authorities to not screen his film at Locarno, and was unable to attend the festival after being banned from leaving Iran.
