The 76th annual Locarno Festival was held from 2 August to 12 August 2023 in Locarno, Switzerland. [1] [2]

Contents

French actor Lambert Wilson was the head of the Main Competition Jury. [3] American filmmaker Harmony Korine received the Pardo d’Onore Manor. [4]

Iranian film Critical Zone , directed by Ali Ahmadzadeh, was the winner of the Golden Leopard, the festival main prize. Radu Jude's Do Not Expect Too Much from the End of the World was the winner of the Special Jury Prize. [5]

For this year edition, the acting categories (Best Actor/Best Actress) became gender-neutral after the creation of the Best Performance category. At the Main Competition, the winners were Dimitra Vlagopoulou for Animal and Renée Soutendijk for Sweet Dreams . [5]

Leopard of Tomorrow (Pardi di Domani)

The Pardi di domani section, dedicated to short films by emerging Swiss and international directors, combines with auteur shorts competition Concorso Corti d’autore to screen a total of 40 films, all presented as world premieres. Retrospettiva

Espectáculo a diario – Las distintas temporadas del cine popular mexicano” (“Spectacle Every Day – The Many Seasons of Mexican Popular Cinema”) will offer an intensive investigation of Mexican filmmaking from the 1940s to the end of the 1960s, covering decades hallmarked by astonishing creativity and peppered with stars of the silver screen and one-of-a-kind directors who were an inspiration for generations. This year's Retrospective is curated by Olaf Möller, in collaboration with Roberto Turigliatto. A collection of essays in Spanish and English to accompany the event, curated by Jorge Javier Negrete Camacho and Alonso Díaz de la Vega, will be published by Les éditions de l’Œil: [1] [6]

The Locarno Film Festival is a major international film festival, held annually in Locarno, Switzerland. Founded in 1946, the festival screens films in various competitive and non-competitive sections, including feature-length narrative, documentary, short, avant-garde, and retrospective programs. The Piazza Grande section is held in an open-air venue that seats 8,000 spectators.

The Leopard of Honour is a life's work achievement award at the Locarno International Film Festival held annually in Locarno, Switzerland. The award has been given out since 1989. The award especially denotes recognition of auteur cinema and creative and audacious filmmaking. Starting in 2009, the prize was named in Italian after its sponsor, becoming the "Pardo d'onore Swisscom".

The Golden Leopard is the top prize at the Locarno International Film Festival, an international film festival held annually in Locarno, Switzerland since 1946. Directors in the process of getting an international reputation are allowed to be entered in the competitive selection. The winning films are chosen by a jury. The award went under many names until it was named the Golden Leopard in 1968. The festival was not held in 1951 and the prize was not awarded in 1956 and 1982. As of 2024 René Clair is the only director to have won the award twice, winning in the first two years of the festival.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Denis Côté</span> Canadian filmmaker and producer

Denis Côté is a Canadian independent filmmaker and producer living in Quebec, of Brayon origin. His experimental films have been shown at major film festivals around the world.

Thomas Imbach is an independent filmmaker based in Zürich, Switzerland. With his production company Bachim Films, Imbach produced his own work until 2007. He then founded Okofilm Productions with director/producer Andrea Staka. All of his films have been theatrically released and Imbach has won numerous awards for his work, both in Switzerland and abroad. With Well Done (1994) and Ghetto (1997) Imbach established his trademark audio-visual style, which is based on a combination of cinema- verité camerawork and fast-paced editing. His fiction features Happiness is a Warm Gun, as well as Lenz (2006), I Was a Swiss Banker (2007) and the fictive autobiography Day is Done (2011) all premiered at the Berlinale. His latest feature film Mary Queen of Scots celebrated its premiere in Locarno and at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2013. His latest documentary Nemesis celebrated its international premiere at International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam 2020, where it received the Prize for Best Cinematography. Thomas Imbach is currently considered one of the most unconventional and consistent Swiss filmmakers.

Ayşe Polat is a German-Kurdish film director, screenwriter and film producer.

Kamal Aljafari - also written Kamal Jafari is a Palestinian artist, film director and producer.

I Have Electric Dreams is a 2022 coming-of-age drama film directed by Valentina Maurel, starring Reinaldo Amien Gutiérrez, Daniela Marín Navarro, Vivian Rodriguez, Adriana Castro García and Jose Pablo Segreda Johanning. The film produced by Gregoire Debailly and Benoit Roland is a co-production of Costa Rica, Belgium and France. It revolves around a young girl Eva, who lives with her mother, her little sister and their cat. The film captures the thin line between love and hate, in a world where aggression and rage intertwined with the vertigo of female sexual awakening. It premiered at the 75th Locarno Film Festival on 8 August 2022, where it won the Pardo for Best Direction, Pardo for Best Actress and Pardo for Best Actor.

Do Not Expect Too Much from the End of the World is a 2023 black comedy film written and directed by Radu Jude. It stars Ilinca Manolache with supporting performances by Nina Hoss and Uwe Boll. It is a co-production among Romania, Croatia, France and Luxembourg.

The Pardo for Best Performance is an award given at the Locarno International Film Festival. It was first awarded in 2023. In 2022, the Locarno Film Festival announced that the two acting categories would be retired and replaced with one gender neutral category, with both Best Actor and Best Actress merging into two Pardo Awards for the Best Performances category.
