Money Has Four Legs (Burmese : ခြေလေးချောင်း), is a 2020 Burmese comedy drama film. The film follows the journey of a young director who attempts to complete a feature film in Myanmar, and satirically depicts systemic issues in the country, including corruption and government censorship, and the state of the Burmese film industry. In the wake of the 2021 Myanmar coup d'état, the film's producer and co-writer, Ma Aeint, was detained by the military junta in June 2021, after becoming a target of the junta for her involvement in this film. [3] [4] She was sentenced to 3 years of hard labour in April 2022. [4]

Critical reception

The film was well received by audiences, and was shown at international film festivals, including the 25th Busan International Film Festival, 74th Locarno Film Festival, the 20th New York Asian Film Festival, and the 2021 Vancouver International Film Festival. [3] It was awarded the Special Mention award of Global Feature Award at the 2021 Jakarta Film Week. [5]

On May 4, 2009, American John Yettaw trespassed upon the residence of Myanmar political prisoner Aung San Suu Kyi, two weeks before her scheduled release from house arrest on May 27. This illegal visit prompted Suu Kyi's arrest on May 13, 2009. Yettaw himself was arrested by Myanmar authorities on May 6. He was charged on May 14 with illegally entering a restricted zone, illegal swimming, and breaking immigration laws. It is illegal in Myanmar to have a guest stay overnight at one's home without notifying the authorities first.

Thaung Tun is a Burmese editor, filmmaker, and poet. He was imprisoned from October 1999 to January 2007 after releasing videos that exposed the harsh conditions in his country. While in prison he received an International Press Freedom award.

Ashin Wirathu is a Burmese Buddhist monk, and the leader of the 969 Movement in Myanmar. He has incited the persecution of Muslims in Myanmar through his speeches. Facebook banned his page on the charge of allegedly spreading religious hatred towards other communities, after repeated warnings to not post religiously inflammatory content.
