The 20th New York Asian Film Festival was held in New York from 6 August to 22 August 2021. The opening film of the festival was Escape from Mogadishu , a South Korean film by Ryoo Seung-wan. [1] Seventy titles were screened both online, as well as in person. The 20th edition of the festival featured two world premieres, six international premieres, twenty nine North American premieres, eight U.S. premieres and nine New York premieres. [2]
2021's festival featured the first ever outdoor screening of Raymond Lee’s wuxia 1992 film New Dragon Gate Inn at Lincoln Center’s Damrosch Park on August 11. The event was co-presented by Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in New York. [3] [4]
The Uncaged Award for Best Feature Film was awarded to Anima by Cao Jinling. [5]
This year a new section is added to focus on Asian American experience.

The New York Asian Film Festival (NYAFF) is a film festival held in New York City dedicated to the display of Asian film and culture. The New York Asian Film Festival generally features contemporary premieres and classic titles from Eastern Asia and Southeast Asia, though South Asian cinema has also been represented via films from India and Pakistan.
The Blue Dragon Film Awards is an annual awards ceremony that is presented by Sports Chosun for excellence in film in South Korea.
The Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival, or BiFan, formerly known as Puchon International Fantastic Film Festival or PiFan, is an international film festival held annually in July in Bucheon, South Korea. Inaugurated in 1997, the festival focuses on South Korean and international horror, thriller, mystery and fantasy films, with particular attention to Asian cinema from East Asia and Southeast Asia. It is a non-competitive international film festival, with partial competition, awarding a number of awards.
Byun Yo-han is a South Korean actor. He is best known for his roles in the television series Misaeng: Incomplete Life (2014), Six Flying Dragons (2015–2016), and Mr. Sunshine (2018). He has also appeared in films including Socialphobia (2015), The Book of Fish (2021) and Hansan: Rising Dragon (2022), for which he was awarded Best Supporting Actor at the 59th Baeksang Arts Awards.
Koo Kyo-hwan is a South Korean actor and film director known for his role in the films Jane (2016), Peninsula (2020), and Escape from Mogadishu (2021). He also attracted recognition for his performance in Netflix original D.P. (2021–2023).
Jeon Jong-seo, also known as Rachel Jun, is a South Korean actress. She made her acting debut in a leading role in the 2018 acclaimed thriller film Burning. She next starred in the film The Call (2020) for which she won the Baeksang Arts Award for Best Actress – Film. She starred in the English language film Mona Lisa and the Blood Moon in 2021 and in the Netflix series Money Heist: Korea – Joint Economic Area in 2022.
Kang Mal-geum is a South Korean actress. She graduated in Arts from Pusan National University, Department of Korean Language and Literature. She made her acting debut in 2010 in the film Yong-Tae :The Ordinary Memories. She is known for her role in the film Lucky Chan-sil (2019), for which she earned six 'Best New Actress' and one 'Best Actress' awards in seven different award shows. She also appeared in the film The Chase (2017) and the television series Legal High (2019) and Missing: The Other Side (2020). In 2021, she appeared in a small role on the hit Netflix survival drama series Squid Game.
Escape from Mogadishu is a 2021 South Korean political action thriller film, directed by Ryoo Seung-wan and starring Kim Yoon-seok, Zo In-sung, Heo Joon-ho, Koo Kyo-hwan, Kim So-jin and Jung Man-sik. The film, based on real events, is set during the overthrow of Siad Barre and the two Koreas' efforts to be admitted to the United Nations in the late 1980s and early 1990s. It depicts details of a perilous escape attempt made by North and South Korean embassy workers stranded during the conflict.
The Chunsa Film Art Awards have been hosted by the Korean Film Directors Association, since the 1990s to commemorate the Korean film pioneer Chunsa Na Woon-gyu. Previously known as Chunsa Film Festival, it was announced that it will become an international film festival this year.
The 26th Busan International Film Festival opened on October 6 at the Busan Cinema Center in Busan, South Korea with South Korean film Heaven: To the Land of Happiness by Im Sang-soo. Park So-dam and Song Joong-ki hosted the opening of the festival, which was streamed live on YouTube.
Snowball is a 2020 South Korean youth drama film, directed by Lee Woo-jeong and starring Bang Min-ah, Shim Dal-gi, and Han Sung-min. The film adapted from The Best Life by Lim Solah, tells the story of three high school best friends who run away to find answers to their perceived troubles. It was premiered at 25th Busan International Film Festival held from October 21 to 30, 2020. It was released theatrically on September 1, 2021.
Spiritwalker is a 2021 South Korean mystery action fantasy film, written and directed by Yoon Jae-geun. Starring Yoon Kye-sang, Park Yong-woo and Lim Ji-yeon, the film revolves around an amnesiac man who subsequently wakes up in a new body every twelve hours. It had its premiere at the 20th New York Asian Film Festival on August 22, 2021, and was released theatrically on November 24, 2021, in South Korea.
Perhaps Love is a 2021 South Korean comedy-drama film, directed by Jo Eun-ji for Next Entertainment. Starring Ryu Seung-ryong, Oh Na-ra and Kim Hee-won, the film revolves around a best selling writer named Hyeon who has been in the slumps for 7 years. Then he meets an aspiring author Yoo-jin, who brings about change in his values.
Three Sisters is a 2020 South Korean drama film, written and directed by Lee Seung-won. Starring Moon So-ri, Kim Sun-young and Jang Yoon-ju, the film revolves three sisters who seem to live an ordinary life but lives in their own different ways, but memories shook everything. It had its premiere at 25th Busan International Film Festival in October, 2020 and was released theatrically on January 27, 2021 in South Korea. The film has won 12 awards at different award ceremonies.
Ten Months is a 2020 South Korean pregnancy drama film written and directed by Nam Koong-sun in her directorial debut starring Choi Sung-eun. The film is a feature project from the Korea National University of Arts (K'Arts) that debuted in the Korean Cinema Section of the Jeonju International Film Festival on May 28, 2020. The film was released domestically in South Korea on October 14, 2021.
Hommage is a 2021 South Korean film directed by Shin Su-won, starring Lee Jung-eun, Kwon Hae-hyo, Tang Jun-sang, and Lee Joo-shil. The film depicts a cinema time travel of a middle-aged film director that connects 1962 and 2022. It was released in theaters on May 26, 2022.
The 21st New York Asian Film Festival began in New York from 15 July with the opening film of the festival Fast and Feel Love, a Thai film by Nawapol Thamrongrattanarit. The 21st edition was celebrated as 20th anniversary of the festival and seventy titles were screened in person. The lineup included six world premieres, eight international premieres, 19 North American premieres, four U.S. premieres, and 17 East Coast premieres. The festival closed with Korean sci-fi 2022 film Alienoid by Choi Dong-hoon on 31 July. Mongolian film The Sales Girl by Janchivdorj Sengedorj won the Uncaged Award for Best Feature Film.
The 27th Busan International Film Festival was held from October 5 at the Busan Cinema Center in Busan, South Korea till October 14. This year, the festival restarted events and program sections which were not conducted due to COVID-19 for last 2 years. The festival opened with Iranian film Scent of the Wind by director Seyed Hadi Mohaghegh, Jeon Yeo-been with Ryu Jun-yeol were master of ceremonies for the opening ceremony.
The 22nd New York Asian Film Festival was held in New York on 14 July with North American premiere of South Korean film Killing Romance by Lee Won-suk, who attended the screening in person. In the 22nd edition seventy eight titles were screened in person. The lineup included eight world premieres, nine international premieres, thirty-two North American premieres, three U.S. premieres, and sixteen East Coast/New York premieres. Films from various genres from Hong Kong, Japan, China, South Korea, the Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia, Taiwan, Thailand, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Singapore, Vietnam, the United Kingdom, and the United States were screened.
