New York Asian Film Festival

The 22nd New York Asian Film Festival was held in New York on 14 July with North American premiere of South Korean film Killing Romance by Lee Won-suk, who attended the screening in person. In the 22nd edition seventy eight titles were screened in person. The lineup included eight world premieres, nine international premieres, thirty-two North American premieres, three U.S. premieres, and sixteen East Coast/New York premieres. [1] Films from various genres from Hong Kong, Japan, China, South Korea, the Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia, Taiwan, Thailand, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Singapore, Vietnam, the United Kingdom, and the United States were screened. In Star Asia Awards category, Asian stars were honoured with various awards such as: Louis Koo a Hong Kong actor, singer and film producer with Extraordinary Star Asia Award; [4] Junji Sakamoto, a Japanese film director, with Screen International Star Asia Lifetime Achievement Award; Ryohei Suzuki, a Japanese actor, with Screen International Rising Star Asia Award; [5] and Lee Hanee a South Korean actress, model, classical musician, with Best from the East Award. [2]

The festival was closed on 30 July with Anthony Stacchi's animated Netflix film The Monkey King . It is the first time the festival has partnered with Netflix for the world premiere of a film, which was held before the August 18 worldwide release on Netflix. [6] Malaysian film Abang Adik by Jin Ong won the Uncaged Award for best feature film. It is a directorial debut feature of Jin Ong and follows two orphaned brothers whose bond is tested after a brutal accident. [7] The Audience Award was awarded to Taiwanese film Marry My Dead Body , a LGBTQ+ story from director Cheng Wei-hao. In his closing speech the NYAFF Executive Director and President of the New York Asian Film Foundation Samuel Jamier said, "2023 marked a giant leap forward for the festival, in terms of audience size (with a 35% increase in attendance, and the largest number of sold out screenings), numbers of films and guest filmmakers and actors (over 100 guests from Asia), a major partnership with Netflix and a whole new, expanded pool of donors." Hand Rolled Cigarette is a 2020 Hong Kong neo-noir crime drama film written and directed by Chan Kin-long in his directorial debut, and starring Gordon Lam as a retired colonial-era soldier who takes in a troubled South Asian youth. The film opened the 17th Hong Kong Asian Film Festival on 3 November 2020, and also closed the 57th Golden Horse Film Festival on 19 and 20 November 2020, where it was nominated for seven awards including Best Feature Film. The film held a special preview screening in Hong Kong on 30 April 2021, before it was widely released on 17 June 2021 in the territory.

The 20th New York Asian Film Festival was held in New York from 6 August to 22 August 2021. The opening film of the festival was Escape from Mogadishu, a South Korean film by Ryoo Seung-wan. Seventy titles were screened both online, as well as in person. The 20th edition of the festival featured two world premieres, six international premieres, twenty nine North American premieres, eight U.S. premieres and nine New York premieres.

The 21st New York Asian Film Festival began in New York from 15 July with the opening film of the festival Fast and Feel Love, a Thai film by Nawapol Thamrongrattanarit. The 21st edition was celebrated as 20th anniversary of the festival and seventy titles were screened in person. The lineup included six world premieres, eight international premieres, 19 North American premieres, four U.S. premieres, and 17 East Coast premieres. The festival closed with Korean sci-fi 2022 film Alienoid by Choi Dong-hoon on 31 July. Mongolian film The Sales Girl by Janchivdorj Sengedorj won the Uncaged Award for Best Feature Film.

Rebound is a 2023 South Korean sports drama film directed by Jang Hang-jun. Kim Eun-hee with Kwon Seong-hui wrote the screenplay based on the true story of basketball coach Kang Yang-hyeon and the Busan Jungang High School's 2012 run to the national championships final despite having only six players on its roster. The Monkey King is a 2023 animated fantasy action comedy film directed by Anthony Stacchi from a screenplay written by Rita Hsiao and the writing team of Steve Bencich and Ron J. Friedman. It is based on the first 7 chapters of the classic Ming dynasty novel, Journey to the West. The film stars Jimmy O. Yang as the voice of the titular trickster, with Bowen Yang, Jo Koy, BD Wong, Jolie Hoang-Rappaport, and Stephanie Hsu in supporting roles.

Kartik Vijay is an Indian cinematographer best known for his works in the Hindi and Sinophone cinema. He earned a nomination for Best Cinematography in the 64th Filmfare Awards with the Indian biographical drama film Manto (2018), and was also nominated for Best Cinematography four times with the Malaysian historical drama film The Garden of Evening Mists (2019), Taiwanese sci-fi film The Soul (2021), Malaysian neo-noir drama film Abang Adik (2023), and Taiwanese drama film Yen and Ai-Lee (2024), in the 56th, 58th, 60th, and 61st Golden Horse Awards respectively.

The 23rd New York Asian Film Festival was held in New York on 12 July with World Premiere of South Korean film Victory by Park Beom-su, who attended the screening in person. In the 23rd edition 94 titles were screened in person. The film selection featured both contemporary and timeless titles from various Asian countries, as well as beyond, showcasing nine world premieres, 12 international premieres, and 38 North American premieres. Films from various genres from China, South Korea, Japan, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Thailand, Indonesia, Mongolia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Vietnam, and beyond were screened.
