Sri Lanka,historically known as Ceylon and officially the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka,is an island country in South Asia. Dudley Shelton Senanayake,was a Sri Lankan statesman who served as Prime Minister of Ceylon from 1952 to 1953,in 1960 and from 1965 to 1970 and Leader of the Opposition from 1960 to 1964. Senanayake's tenures as prime minister were associated with democratic policies focused on agricultural and educational reforms with a pro-western alignment.
Hamilton Shirley Amerasinghe,CCS was a Sri Lankan diplomat and civil servant. He was High Commissioner to India and concurrently Ambassador to both Nepal and Afghanistan (1963–1967) and Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Finance and Treasury and the Ministry of Health. Amerasinghe served as Ceylon's Permanent Representative to the United Nations 1967 to 1980 and served as President of the United Nations General Assembly in 1976. He was also one of the leaders of the negotiations to draft the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.
The attorney general of Sri Lanka is the Sri Lankan government's chief legal adviser,and its primary lawyer in the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka. The attorney general is usually a highly respected senior advocate,and is appointed by the ruling government. The current attorney general is Sanjay Rajaratnam. The president does not have any power to make orders,mandatory or otherwise,to the attorney general. He heads the Attorney General's Department which is the public prosecutor.
Victor Tennekoon QC was a Sri Lankan lawyer and jurist. He served as the 35th Chief Justice of Sri Lanka,as well as the 33rd Attorney General and 23rd Solicitor General. From 1979 to 1984 Tennekoon served as Chancellor of the University of Peradeniya.
