History

A Bullet for Pretty Boy formed in Longview, Texas in 2006, with members having previously played in other local bands. [2] [3] Contrary to early misconceptions that the group's name was homophobic, it was in fact taken from the 1970 film of the same name, a biopic of gangster Pretty Boy Floyd, as the members resonated with its message about the futility of revenge. [2] The band's lineup as of June 2015 consisted of vocalist Danon Saylor, guitarist Chris Johnston, and vocalist/keyboardist Josh Modisette, and had previously included vocalist/guitarist Derrick Sechrist, bassists Bryan Bingham and Taylor Kimball, and drummer Josh Trammel. [4]

The band debuted with the self-released EP Beauty in the Eyes of the Beholder, released on March 8, 2008, [4] They subsequently signed to Razor & Tie and Artery Recordings, where they released their debut studio album, Revision:Revise , on November 9, 2010. [5] [6] [7] Their second studio album, Symbiosis, was released on the same labels on July 31, 2012. [8] [9] [10]

Musical style

A Bullet for Pretty Boy was primarily identified as metalcore, post-hardcore, melodic hardcore, and screamo. [10] [8] [6] [11] Alternative Press noted that Josh Modisette's keyboard work on Symbiosis gave the band's songs a "Deftones-ish depth". [8] In a 2009 interview with Indie Vision Music, guitarist Chris Johnston described the band's sound as "a mix of hardcore breakdowns, progressive / ambience, and catchy choruses," and listed Underoath, early As Cities Burn, August Burns Red, and Circa Survive as the group's main influences. Bloodlined Calligraphy is an American metalcore band, infusing death metal and thrash metal. Hailing from Ypsilanti, Michigan, the band started making music in 1996 under the name Friction. In 1999, the band changed its name to Bloodlined Calligraphy and the band's lineup consisted of Matt Carter (drums), Matt Fleming, Ryan Hampton (guitar), Eric Cargile, and Josh Colvin (guitar). The band signed to Selah Records and, in 2002, they released their first full-length album, Say Hi to the Bad Guy. In 2003, Fleming left the band amicably. The band conducted a nationwide search for their next vocalist, with Fleming having a large say in who should replace him as the band's vocalist. The band asked Michigan native Ally French, who was fronting a touring metalcore band in Ohio at the time, to audition. Ally had sung clean vocals alongside Fleming for several of Bloodlined Calligraphy's live shows and was Fleming's favored replacement. The band appointed Ally as their vocalist and played their first live shows together in late 2003. During the band's second show with Ally at the front, the group caught the eyes and ears of Jason Dunn, owner of Los Angeles-based record labels Facedown Records and Strike First Records. The group became part of Strike First Records and released an EP in 2004 titled The Beginning of the End, which was recorded by Mike Hasty, guitarist of another female-fronted, Michigan-based hardcore band, Walls of Jericho.
