A Happy Pocket is the third studio album by the Scottish band the Trash Can Sinatras, released by Go! Discs in 1996. Upon its original release, the album reached number 125 in the UK Albums Chart. [2] It fared better in 2023, when a reissue on the Last Night From Glasgow label saw the album reach number 77. [3]
A Happy Pocket was recorded at the band's own 24-track studio, Shabby Road Studios in Kilmarnock. The album was originally given a release date of 20 May 1996, [1] but this was later pushed back to 2 September. [4] An EP and four singles were released from the album: "The Genius I Was" (promotional only), "The Main Attraction" EP (UK No. 182), "Twisted and Bent" (UK No. 121), "How Can I Apply...?" (UK No. 172) and "To Sir, With Love" (UK No. 88). [2] [5]
After Go! Discs was acquired by Universal in 1996, the Trash Can Sinatras were dropped from the label. They were subsequently forced to sell their studio and declare bankruptcy. John Douglas told AXS in 2017: "Being made bankrupt meant we couldn't really work as a band; we couldn't put out records, we couldn't tour, any money that was made would have to be used to pay bills and creditors." The band later returned to the studio to record Weightlifting , which was released in 2004. [6]

On its release, Colm O'Callaghan of the Sunday Tribune wrote: "One Kilmarnock five-piece, three reluctant guitars, six dashing harmonies, one huge storm. Insistent melodies play foil to pun-heavy vignettes and kitchen-sink dramas making A Happy Pocket a pearl among swine." [8] Neil McKay of Sunday Life commented: "This is a frustrating album, offering teasing glimpses of what could be a major talent. The Sinatras deal in bog standard jingly-jangly guitar pop, leavened with a handful of songs that have rather greater pretensions. Yet, when they get it right, they make pop of rare quality." McKay singled out "The Safecracker" and "The Pop Place" as examples of the latter. [9]
Katherine Monk of The Vancouver Sun wrote: "Strung together with guitar reverb and violins, the sound is an acid trip through the red velvet lounge. The snags come where they always have, when the band descends into the bland bunker of Britpop where the sounds are so soft, they stick together." Monk picked "Outside, "To Sir, With Love" and "Main Attraction" as the album's "standouts". [10] Tim DiGravina of AllMusic considered A Happy Pocket "a bit of letdown" in comparison to the band's first two "glorious pop masterpieces". He commented: "Murky production, strange vocal effects that obscure Reader's delicate voice, and an over-reliance on mandolin overdubs make for a generally less than engaging listen. At least one-third of the album comes across like a collection of fleshless demos." He picked "The Safecracker", "Twisted & Bent", "How Can I Apply...?" and "The Therapist" as being "absolutely sublime" and "fine additions to the Trash Can canon". [7]
All tracks are written by The Trash Can Sinatras except "To Sir, With Love" by Mark London and Don Black.

The Associates were a Scottish post-punk and pop band, formed in Dundee in 1979 by lead vocalist Billy Mackenzie and guitarist Alan Rankine. The group first gained recognition after releasing an unauthorized cover version of David Bowie's "Boys Keep Swinging" as their debut single in 1979, which landed them a recording contract with Fiction Records. They followed with their debut studio album The Affectionate Punch in 1980 and the compilation album Fourth Drawer Down in 1981, both to critical praise.
Screaming Trees was an American rock band formed in Ellensburg, Washington, in 1984 by vocalist Mark Lanegan, guitarist Gary Lee Conner, bassist Van Conner, and drummer Mark Pickerel. Pickerel was replaced by Barrett Martin in 1991. Screaming Trees became known as one of the pioneers of grunge along with the Melvins, Mudhoney, U-Men, Skin Yard, Soundgarden, Green River, Malfunkshun, among others. Although widely associated with grunge, the band's sound incorporated hard rock and psychedelic elements.

Spiders is the debut album by English band Space, released on 16 September 1996. After signing to independent label Gut Records, the band recorded Spiders between 1995 and 1996 in Liverpool. The album combines a great wealth of styles and genres, including rock, hip hop, techno and funk. It was the result of the various musical tastes of the band members, with several songs containing several different styles within themselves. Many of the lyrics of the album, mostly written by vocalist Tommy Scott and inspired by films, are darkly humorous and largely story-driven, featuring numerous sadistic characters.

Pop Trash is the tenth studio album by English new wave band Duran Duran. It was released on 19 June 2000 by Hollywood Records. Pop Trash was the band's first release after parting ways with EMI, with whom they had been signed since 1981. It was also the last to feature the trio of Simon Le Bon, Nick Rhodes and Warren Cuccurullo. The CD album went out of print in 2001. It was the only album the band released under Hollywood Records. After the album's poor sales, Duran Duran's contract with the label was terminated, and they would not release an album until 2004's Astronaut. The album artwork, created by Andrew Day, features a rhinestone-encrusted car that belonged to Liberace.

"Ask" is a song recorded by the English rock band the Smiths. It was released as a single on 20 October 1986 through Rough Trade Records. Credited to vocalist Morrissey and guitarist Johnny Marr, "Ask" is an ostensibly upbeat, positive pop song built around major chords. Its lyrics discuss shyness and encourage listeners to overcome their inhibitions. Its multiple guitar parts and complex production led to disagreements regarding its final mix. Craig Gannon, who at the time was rhythm guitarist for the group, has claimed he wrote – and was denied credit for – the song's chord structure.

Paradise Circus is the second album by English band the Lilac Time and was released by Fontana Records in October 1989. Initially intended to be a double album, consisting of one album of songs by band leader Stephen Duffy and one of instrumentals, it ended up being condensed into a single album at the record company's insistence. The album is regarded by critics as being bolder and fuller-sounding than the Lilac Time's first album, with a greater country & western influence.
& Love for All is the third album by English band the Lilac Time and was released by Fontana Records in 1990. It saw the band move away from the folk pop sound of their first two albums towards an electric guitar and keyboard heavy sound indebted to 60's pop and psychedelia.
