A Tune a Day is the second album by Scottish Britpop band the Supernaturals on the Food Records branch of the Parlophone label.
Three singles were released from the album, the first of which, "I Wasn't Built to Get Up", peaked at number 25 in August 1998, making them the only citizens of Milngavie to clock up five appearances in the top 40. [1] The follow-up singles "Sheffield Song" and "Everest" didn't break the top 40. The album itself peaked at number 21 in August 1998 [2] and received some positive reviews (7/10 NME and 4/5 Q) which were supported by festival appearances and several headlining tours, and a 30 date UK Arena and European tour with solo singer Robbie Williams and Irish band the Divine Comedy. [3] [4] "I Wasn't Built to Get up" was used in an advertising campaign for Direct Debits on UK television in 1999. The song "Monday Mornings" was used in the film Fast Food in 1999. In November 1998 The Herald claimed it had been "a triumphant past 12 months for oor ain Supernaturals, those masters of perky power-poptasticality". [5]
A Tune a Day was recorded at various studios in the UK: Cava, Chapel, Chipping Norton, Jacobs and Trident. Sessions were helmed by producer Pete Smith; Geoff Allan, Ben Darlow, Barry Hammond and Graeme Stewart served as engineers. The album was mixed by Smith with Darlow, before it was mastered by Geoff Pesche at Townhouse Studios in London. [6]
The Independent reviewed the album as "rather weak and enervated, the inevitable consequence of continuing to subscribe to the Britpop formula after the genre's appeal has curdled... demonstrates facility without taste". [7] The Irish Times was more positive, commenting that "for the Supernaturals, A Tune a Day is less a title than a manifesto". [8] The List commented that the album was "more melancholy than [their] debut" album. [9] Hot Press noted the style as "pretty much Britpop writ if not quite large then in italics" and "The Supernaturals is a rather ironic name for a band who are so ordinary. They are, essentially, your average white indie guitar band, only with more jokes and a sense of self-awareness... At times this modesty serves them well and brings you over to their side; but sometimes it just makes them seem stultifyingly unambitious". [10] XS NOIZE asked if you "crossed a hint of Blur's upbeat mid 90s output with a Scottish-flavoured twist of The Beach Boys and their sunny melodies? You’d probably end up with something a bit like The Supernaturals." [11] Back Seat Mafia described "a hidden gem of an album.. 'I Wasn't Built to Get Up', with its memorable chorus and universally understandable message, was exactly the right choice of first single to promote the album, despite the band and record label being spoilt for choice. Songs like 'You Take Yourself Too Seriously', 'Idiot', and 'Let Me Know' were glorious slabs of melody-heavy power pop, while album apex 'Sheffield Song' confirmed just how far The Supernaturals had developed since their debut." Ash are a Northern Irish rock band formed in Downpatrick, County Down in 1992 by vocalist and guitarist Tim Wheeler, bassist Mark Hamilton and drummer Rick McMurray. As a three-piece, they released mini-album Trailer in 1994 and full-length album 1977 in 1996. This 1996 release was named by NME as one of the 500 greatest albums of all time. After the success of their full debut the band recruited Charlotte Hatherley as a guitarist and vocalist, releasing their second record Nu-Clear Sounds in 1998. After narrowly avoiding bankruptcy, the band released Free All Angels in 2001 and a string of successful singles.
The Supernaturals are a guitar-based indie rock band from Glasgow, Scotland. The band signed to Parlophone in 1996, and had a string of singles which were taken from their three albums and four EPs. Other members included Mark Guthrie, Derek McManus, Gavin Crawford and Ken McAlpine. The band's best known songs were featured prominently in a series of television advertisements. In total they scored five Top 40 entries in the UK Singles Chart. The band broke up in 2002, before reforming in 2012, and they continue to record music, and perform concerts, to this day.
Creation Records Ltd. was a British independent record label founded in 1983 by Alan McGee, Dick Green, and Joe Foster. Its name came from the 1960s band The Creation, whom McGee greatly admired. The label ceased operations in 1999, although it was revived at one point in 2011 for the release of the compilation album Upside Down.
You Boyz Make Big Noize is the fourteenth and final studio album by the British rock group Slade. It was released on 27 April 1987 and reached number 98 in the UK Albums Chart. The album was largely produced by bassist Jim Lea, with two tracks produced by John Punter and another two by Roy Thomas Baker. It was the last studio album by the original lineup, prior to their split in 1992.
Murray Lachlan Young is a British poet, stand-up performer, broadcaster, playwright and screenwriter, and he is also a children's author who has worked extensively in schools. He came to prominence during the Britpop era of the mid-1990s, when he became the only poet to sign a recording contract worth £1m.
Six is the second album by English alternative rock band Mansun, released in September 1998 via Parlophone. It was released in the UK and Europe on 7 September 1998, and in the US on 20 April 1999, with an alternative running order, different artwork, and the re-recorded single version of the title track. In an interview prior to the release of Six, Paul Draper stated that the "interlude" "Witness to a Murder " was included to separate the album into two parts as a tribute to old-style vinyl albums.

Astrid is a guitar-pop foursome formed in Glasgow in the mid-1990s, but with strong ties to Isle of Lewis in the Hebrides, Scotland. The group released three studio albums, as well as several singles and EPs, before breaking up in 2004.
"Cum On Feel the Noize" is a song by the English rock band Slade, which was released in 1973 as a non-album single. It was written by lead vocalist Noddy Holder and bassist Jim Lea, and produced by Chas Chandler. It reached No. 1 in the UK Singles Chart, giving the band their fourth number one single, and remained in the charts for twelve weeks. The song was included on the band's 1973 compilation album Sladest. In a UK poll in 2015 it was voted 15th on the ITV special The Nation's Favourite 70s Number One.
"Mama Weer All Crazee Now" is a song by the British rock band Slade, released in 1972 as the lead single from their third studio album Slayed? It was written by lead vocalist Noddy Holder and bassist Jim Lea, and produced by Chas Chandler. It reached No. 1 in the UK, giving the band their third number one single, and remained in the charts for ten weeks. In the United States, the song reached No. 76.
Saturday Nights & Sunday Mornings is the fifth studio album by American rock band Counting Crows, released in the United States on March 25, 2008. It is thematically divided into two sides: the rock music of Saturday Nights and the more country-influenced Sunday Mornings. Vocalist and lyricist Adam Duritz states that the album "is about really wanting to mean something and failing to do it. You want your life to mean something. You want to be somebody and then what you turn out to be is so much less than what you thought you were going to be."
Post-Britpop is an alternative rock subgenre and is the period in the late 1990s and early 2000s, following Britpop, when the media were identifying a "new generation" or "second wave" of guitar bands influenced by acts like Oasis and Blur, but with less overt British concerns in their lyrics and making more use of American rock and indie influences, as well as experimental music. Bands in the post-Britpop era that had been established acts, but gained greater prominence after the decline of Britpop, such as Radiohead and the Verve, and new acts such as Keane, Snow Patrol, Stereophonics, Feeder, and particularly Travis and Coldplay, achieved much wider international success than most of the Britpop groups that had preceded them, and were some of the most commercially successful acts of the late 1990s and early 2000s.

The Dirty Clergy is a garage rock/pop band from Winfield, Alabama, whose music has been described as vintage rock, indie rock, and "indie rock pop'n'roll". Their music recalls '50s and early '60s rock 'n' roll, while also possessing hard edge. The band has been featured on numerous radio programs including Nights with Alice Cooper and Rodney on the Roq at KROQ Los Angeles. "Tell That Girl" is a 2017 single released by Scottish alternative rock band Texas as the second single from their ninth studio album Jump on Board (2017). The song was released in March 2017 through PIAS Records and was written by Sharleen Spiteri, Johnny McElhone, Karen Overton, with McElhone serving as the songs producer.
