Aaron Whittaker (born 9 July 1968) is a New Zealand former professional rugby league footballer. A New Zealand international representative halfback, he played club football in Australia, England and New Zealand. [2]
Whittaker grew up in Christchurch and was a Schoolboy Kiwi in 1983 before becoming part of the dominant Canterbury rugby league side of the early nineties. [3] The side was coached by Frank Endacott and included future stars such as Whetu Taewa, Quentin Pongia and Brent Stuart. [4] In Christchurch he played for two clubs: the Halswell Hornets and the Riccarton Knights. [5]
His form was impressive enough to land a contract in the NSWRL Premiership, signing with the Illawarra Steelers in 1992. Whittaker played in three games for the club, including a try-scoring effort against the Great Britain touring side, returning to New Zealand at the end of the year. [6]
In 1993, Whittaker was selected for the New Zealand national rugby league team. He went on to play thirteen games for the national side, although only three were test matches. During this time, he trained with Gary Freeman and Daryl Halligan and this allowed him to improve his halfback and goal kicking skills. In 1994, he was part of the Kiwis tour of Papua New Guinea. [7] Between 1990 and 1994, he played in 17 games for Canterbury, scoring thirteen tries. [6]
In 1994, he played for the Canterbury Cardinals in the new Lion Red Cup and at the half way stage was the competition's leading points scorer. As a result, he began to attract interest from overseas clubs and agreed to a mid-season transfer, joining Wakefield Trinity. He returned to the Cardinals in the English offseason and played in part of the 1995 Lion Red Cup. [8]
After a spell in England, he returned to New Zealand, signing for the Auckland Warriors. He played nine games for the Warriors in the 1997 and 1998 seasons [9]
After being released by the Warriors, he returned to local football in Canterbury, playing for his old side the Haswell Hornets. [10] In 2001, he was involved in the South Island team that played the touring French side. [11] [12]
In 2002, he was named the head trainer for the New Zealand 'A' sides tour of France and the United States, a position he retained for the sides 2003 tour of Australia, where he worked under former teammate Terry Hermansson. [13] [14]
He is now involved with the Currumbin Eagles JRL [15] as a coach where he has steered numerous teams to finals contention. He also is involved with the Gold Coast Rugby League as a referee. [4]
Stacey William Jones is a New Zealand former professional rugby league footballer, who has been named amongst the greatest New Zealand has ever produced. He is currently the head coach of New Zealand national team. He played as a halfback, but he has also briefly played at five-eighth during his distinguished career, which includes 46 Tests for New Zealand (1995–2006). Stacey Jones is the first and only life member of the New Zealand Warriors club whose records for most appearances, tries and points he held at the time of his retirement.
Paul Rauhihi is a New Zealand former professional rugby league footballer who represented New Zealand. Rauhihi played in both the National Rugby League (NRL) and Super League as a prop.
The Canterbury rugby league team are a rugby league team who represent the Canterbury Rugby League. They currently compete in the Albert Baskerville Trophy. Their home ground is Orangetheory Stadium in Christchurch.
William Patrick Noonan was a professional rugby league footballer who played in the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s. He played for the Linwood Keas, the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs, the Newtown Jets and for the New Zealand national side. He played for Canterbury against Australia as an 18-year-old in 1965. Noonan played in seven games on the New Zealand national rugby league team 1967 tour of Australia and in two home Test matches against Australia in 1969. He also represented the South Island, Southern Zone and various age group sides before he was signed by the Bulldogs from the New Zealand Rugby League for a $6,000 transfer fee in 1970. He was Peter Moore's first signing for the Bulldogs. He played for Canterbury-Bankstown in their loss in the 1974 NSWRFL season's grand final.
Gary Ross Freeman is a New Zealand former professional rugby league footballer who played in the 1980s and 1990s, and coached in the 2000s, who both captained and coached the New Zealand national team. He was arguably one of New Zealand's greatest Test halfbacks and at the time of his retirement he was the most-capped New Zealand test player and also held the record for most consecutive tests for New Zealand with 37.
Gene Robert Ngamu is a New Zealand former rugby league footballer. He played mainly as a halfback or five-eighth, and is probably best known for his combination with Stacey Jones at the Auckland Warriors and the Kiwis.
Whetu Taewa is a New Zealand former professional rugby league footballer who represented New Zealand six times between 1989 and 1996.
