The International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) is an English language based secondary qualification similar to the GCSE and is recognised in the United Kingdom as being equivalent to the GCSE for the purposes of recognising prior attainment. Barking Abbey School is a secondary school and specialist sports and humanities college located in the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham. It serves students from the London Boroughs of Barking and Dagenham, Redbridge, and Newham. Years 7 to 11 are at the Longbridge Road site and years 7 to 13 at the Sandringham Road site. The group has been loss making since 2016 and suffered losses of £26.4 million during the 2019/20 financial year and obtained a £2.5 million bridging loan from the parent company on 17 December 2020 that was repaid on 8 January 2021. Alpha Plus has 4,187 pupils and students in 2020 down from 4,289 in 2016.
