Abdu Katuntu (born 3 December 1965) [1] is a Ugandan politician, lawyer currently serving as the Member of Parliament for Bugweri County, [2] [3] [1] Bugweri District. [4]
Katuntu is a practising lawyer, having received a Bachelor of Law from Makerere University and a diploma of Law from the Law Development Centre. [4]
Katuntu is a former member of the Pan-African Parliament from Uganda [5] and the Rapporteur of the Committee on Justice and Human Rights. [1]
Katuntu worked for Kadaga and company advocates which is owned by Rebecca Kadaga. [1]
He was a member of Forum for Democratic Change party until 2021. [6] [1] He served as the Shadow Attorney General in the Parliament of Uganda till 2018 [7] and was replaced by Wilfred Niwagaba. [8]
Katuntu was first elected into the parliament of Uganda in 2001. [4] [6] [1]
He lost his parliamentary seat in the 2006 Ugandan general election to Kirunda Kivejinja but challenged the result, citing widespread malpractices. [9] The court found that "during the campaign period and on polling day, there was wide-spread intimidation, and torture in Bugweri Constituency", biasing the result in favour of Kivejinja. [10] [1] Katuntu won the resulting by-election. [11] [1]
In the 2011 general elections, Katuntu was re-elected for another term in Parliament.
Katuntu served as the chairman on the Parliamentary committee on Rules and Discipline. [12] A committee that concluded that Francis Zaake was guilty of insulting Anita Among and hence removing him from the position of Parliamentary Commissioner. [6] [13] [14] [15]
Katuntu was a chaiperson for the parliamentary committee on Commissions Statutory Authorities and State Enterprise (COSASE). He was replaced by Mubarak Munyagwa in 2019. [2] [16] [17] [18]
Katuntu is known for recovering 47 billion Ugandan shillings recovery from rougue chinese road construction firms in 2016. [1]
Katuntu headed the Parliament of Uganda's task force on Covid-19 where he was assisted by other five members of the parliament of Uganda. Members were tasked to assess the role of the private health players. [19] [20] [21]
Katuntu was described by Yoweri Museveni as a poisonous mushroom who was out to suffocate government programmes as he addressed a rally at Busesa in Bugweri county. [22]
Julius Galisonga, a candidate for Forum for democratic change in the 2021 general election, filed an election pentition against Katuntu at the Jinja high court accusing Katuntu for connving with the Uganda Electoral Commission to frustrate the rightful procedures of fairness of election activities execution. [23] [24] Katuntu had won the election with 17,813 votes while Galisonga had 9,074 votes. [25]
The politics of Uganda occurs in an authoritarian context. Since assuming office in 1986 at the end of the Ugandan civil war, Yoweri Museveni has ruled Uganda as an autocrat. Political parties were banned from 1986 to 2006 in the wake of the 2005 Ugandan multi-party referendum which was won by pro-democracy forces. Since 2006, Museveni has used legal means, patronage, and violence to maintain power.
Rebecca Alitwala Kadaga is a Ugandan lawyer and politician who served as the Speaker of the Parliament of Uganda from 19 May 2011 until 21 May 2021. She currently serves as the First Deputy Prime Minister of Uganda. She concurrently serves as Minister for East African Community Affairs, in the Cabinet of Uganda.
Jacob L'Okori Oulanyah was a Ugandan agricultural economist, lawyer, and politician, who served as the Speaker of the 11th Parliament of Uganda from 2021 to 2022. He was elected to that position on 24 May 2021, after defeating his tenacious rival the then incumbent Speaker Rebecca Alitwala Kadaga. He served as Deputy Speaker of the Ugandan parliament, from May 2011 until May 2021. Oulanyah was also the member of parliament representing the Omoro County constituency, Omoro District, Acholi sub-region, in the Uganda's Northern Region.
Ali Kirunda Kivejinja, more commonly known as Kirunda Kivejinja, was a veteran Ugandan politician and senior presidential advisor to the President of Uganda, Yoweri Museveni. He at the time of his demise was the Second Deputy Prime Minister and Minister without portfolio in the Ugandan Cabinet.

Anita Annet Among is a Ugandan accountant, lawyer and politician who is the Speaker of the 11th Parliament of Uganda since 2022. She was in FDC party before she joined the ruling NRM where she was voted as the Deputy Speaker of the 10th Parliament. She belongs to the ruling National Resistance Movement party serving as the District Woman Representative for Napak District in Uganda's 10th Parliament, a positioned she occupied since 2006.
Aisha Sekindi is a Ugandan educator and legislator. As of February 2022, she serves as Uganda's Minister of State for Water and the woman representative for Kalungu district in Uganda's eleventh parliament. She replaced Hon. Ronald Kibuule who handed over the office in July 2021. She held the same position in Uganda's tenth parliament. Politically, she is affiliated to the National Resistance Movement under whose ticket she contested in the 2016 general election, achieving victory over Aisha Naluyati Waligo of the Democratic Party Uganda (DP).
