Abdullah Al Noman is a Bangladeshi politician who is a vice-chairman of Bangladesh Nationalist Party. [1] He is a 3-term Jatiya Sangsad member representing the Chittagong-9 constituency. [2] He served as a minister of fisheries and food in the second Khaleda Cabinet. [3] [4]
Noman was elected to parliament from Kotwali,Chittagong-9 in 1991. [5]
On 19 August 1998,the Bureau of Anti-Corruption Commission sued Noman for failure to submit a wealth statement with Dhanmondi Police Station. [6] The charge-sheet was submitted on 30 May 2000. [6] The case was taken over by the Anti-Corruption Commission which succeeded the Bureau of Anti-Corruption Commission in 2004. [6]
Noman was elected to parliament from Chittagong-9 in 2001 as a candidate of Bangladesh Nationalist Party. [7] He served as the minister of fisheries and livestock in the Second Khaleda Zia Cabinet. [8] [9]
Noman contested the 9th general election from Chittagong-9 in 2008 as a candidate of Bangladesh Nationalist Party. [7] He lost the election to Afsarul Amin. [7] Noman had received 1,27,815 votes against Amin's 1,37,106 votes. Noman alleged that the election was rigged in favor of Awami League. [7]
Charges from the 1998 Bureau of Anti-Corruption Commission case were framed against Noman with the Dhaka Divisional Special Judges' Court on 2 February 2009. [6] Noman filed an application with the Bangladesh High Court against the framing of the charges which was rejected by the court on 24 January 2013. [6] He filed a leave to appeal against the verdict of Bangladesh High Court which was rejected on 25 January 2016 on a technicality. [6]
In 2009,Noman was engaged in a struggle with Salahuddin Quader Chowdhury to take control of Bangladesh Nationalist Party in Chittagong. [10] He was at that time the joint secretary general of Chittagong City unit of Bangladesh Nationalist Party. [10] In November 2009,supporters of Noman vandalized Institution of Engineers,Bangladesh (IEB) auditorium in Chittagong in which the council of the Chittagong City unit of Bangladesh Nationalist Party was taking place. On 7 April 2013,Noman was sent to jail in connection with a number of criminal cases. [12] Jatiyatabadi Swechhasebak Dal called for a strike in Chittagong the next day protesting the decision. [12]
Noman told reporters that he was considering quitting Bangladesh Nationalist Party in August 2016 after he did not receive a seat in the standing committee of Bangladesh Nationalist Party. [13]
Bangladesh Police from Tongi Police Station arrested Noman on 7 May 2018 from Gazipur near the home of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party candidate of Gazipur City Corporation,Hasan Uddin Sarkar,over allegations of vandalism with 12 other activists of Bangladesh Nationalist Party. [14] Noman was released soon after but the rest were detained by the police for questioning. [14]
Noman reported that his rally in Chittagong on 16 December 2018,on the occasion of victory day of Bangladesh Liberation war,was attacked by armed supporters of Awami League. [15]
Noman complained to Bangladesh Election Commission on 17 March 2020,during the Chattogram City Corporation election campaign,that Awami League activists and Bangladesh Police personnel were interfering with the election campaign of Bangladesh Nationalist Party. [16]

The 2006–2008 Bangladeshi political crisis began as a caretaker government (CTG) assumed power at the end of October 2006 following the end of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party administration. The BNP government increased the chief justice's retirement age in an unconstitutional way to bias the appointment of the head of the caretaker government. CTG manages the government during the interim 90-day period and parliamentary elections. Political conflict began with the alleged appointment of a Chief Adviser,a role which devolved to the President,Dr. Iajuddin Ahmed. The interim period was marked from the beginning by violent protests initiated by the Awami League named Logi Boitha Andolan,with 40 people killed and hundreds injured in the first month. The Bangladesh Nationalist Party had its own complaints about the process and the opposition.
M Ilias Ali was a Bangladeshi politician and member of the Jatiya Sangsad (2001–2006) representing the Sylhet-2 constituency. He served as the organising secretary of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party. He,along with his personal car driver,Ansar Ali,went missing on 18 April 2012. Later that day,local police recovered his abandoned car near his residence in Banani neighborhood and found Ansar's cellphone inside. They have not been seen since. On the tenth anniversary of his disappearance,Netra News,an independent news platform in Sweden,reported on 21 April 2022,that Rapid Action Battalion (RAB),an elite Bangladeshi police unit,had carried out the disappearance. The platform cited leaked confidential documents and internal investigations documents from RAB to reach the conclusion.
Hawa Bhaban is the political office of the chairperson of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party,and monitors party affairs on the chair's behalf. It was viewed as an "alternate power house" in Bangladesh when BNP was in power from 2001 to 2006. It became controversial during the 2006–2008 Bangladeshi political crisis when the party joint secretary was Tarique Rahman,son and heir apparent of the chairperson of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party Khaleda Zia. Some government officials maintained regular contact with viya (Tareq) to manipulate administrative matters such as promotion,posting,appointment etc. in different ministries and divisions. This resulted in a parallel government being administered from Hawa Bhaban.
