Abdur Rasheed Turabi is a well-known politician of Azad Jammu &Kashmir. He was the Emir of Jamaat-e-Islami Azad Kashmir till July 2017. Dr Khalid Mahmood is his successor and newly elected Ameer of JI AJK. [1] He is a well known columnist and also has written books giving the guidelines of solution of Kashmir dispute. [2] He remained President of Islami-e-Jamiat Talaba Kashmir Chapter (1974–76). [3] He participated greatly in the freedom movement of Kashmir. [4] He is member of Legislative Assembly of Azad Jammu &Kashmir. [5] [6] [7] He is also member of Muslim World league.
Turabi was born in 1954 and he belongs to Azad Jammu Kashmir's village Chattar. He completed his matriculation from Bagh High School and received his master's degree in Islamic Studies from Punjab University as well as he completed his LLB from Karachi University. During his student life,Abdul Rasheed took active part in politics and played his important role as President of Islami Jamiat-e-Talaba Azad Jammu Kashmir. After completion of education,Abdul Rasheed Turabi started advocating in the year 1983 and joined Jamaat-e-Islami Azad Kashmir during advocating. He was elected as general secretary of Jamaat-e-Islami Azad Kashmir for the first time while he was continuously 5 times nominated as Ameer of Jamaat-e-Islami Azad Kashmir in the year 1989 to 2002. Abdul Rasheed Turabi has written articles in English,Urdu and Arabic as he has also written several books on Kashmir issue which is providing guidance on the solution of Kashmir issue. [8]
Turabi advocates for constitutional rights of GB people but is against making Gilgit-Baltistan the fifth province of Pakistan. He demands Joint administrative set up of Azad Kashmir and Gilgit Baltistan. As the government of Pakistan moves forward to introduce constitutional reforms in Gilgit Baltistan (GB),Kashmiri leaders have stood to oppose any move of making the region fifth province of Pakistan through some constitutional amendments. Addressing an All Parties Conference (APC) at the National Press Club on Wednesday,Kashmiri leaders including former prime ministers Sardar Attique Ahmad Khan and Sultan Mahmood,Chaudhry Lateef Akbar,Abdul Rasheed Turabi and others said that any move to change the constitutional status of the region would tantamount to divide the state of Kashmir. They through the resolution proposed a joint administrative set up for AJK and GB in which the president,prime minister,High Court and Kashmir Council will be the same for these two regions. [9]
Turabi is known as an ambassador of Kashmir. He travels to renowned countries to get support for Kashmir freedom. In All Parties Kashmir Conference held in Mirpur,Abdul Rasheed Turabi along with PM AJK Raja Farooq Haider,Leader of the Opposition in AJK Legislative Assembly Chaudhry Muhammad Yasin,Ex-PM of AJK Chaudhry Abdul Majeed,All Jammu and Kashmir Muslim Conference President Sardar Attique Ahmed Khan,Justice (retd) Abdul Majeed Malik,PTI leader Khawaja Farooq Ahmed,Hurriyat leaders Ghulam Muhammad Saffi,Mir Tahir Masood,ex-president of AJK Sardar Muhammad Anwar said that the Kashmiri freedom movement would not be suppressed by Indian brutalities anymore. Kashmiri political leadership is united against Indian occupation. People of Jammu and Kashmir would continue their struggle for right to self-determination in accordance with United Nations resolutions till it is achieved. They said:“We reject ludicrous Indian claims of carrying out surgical strikes across the LoC,as blatantly false and brazen attempts at diverting international attention away from its atrocities in IoK”. In a media talk in Sialkot Press Club,he asked the Pakistan government to take up the Kashmir issue with the International Court of Justice (ICJ) effectively. He said that India has provided a unique opportunity for Pakistan to move to ICJ with Kashmir dispute after Indian approach to ICJ in Indian spy Kalbhushan Jadhav's case. He said that Pakistan should launch massive global diplomatic campaign on Kashmir Issue as the time was ripe for the move. Turabi said that the world should resolve the burning Kashmir Issue as per the aspirations of the people of Kashmir,adding early freedom from Indian yoke and plebiscite to the people of Occupied Kashmir is their basic right and Pakistan should resolve the Kashmir Issue first. Turabi also urged the world to use its complete influence to globally pressurise India for the early peaceful solution to burning Kashmir dispute as per the aspirations of the people of the held valley. He expressed complete solidarity with the depressed people of the held valley and said that the sun of freedom of Kashmir will rise soon and people of Occupied Jammu and Kashmir will soon get freedom from Indian yoke. To a question,Turabi also asked the world to ensure Scotland-like plebiscite in Occupied Kashmir. He said that durable peace could never be established in Asia without the early solution to Kashmir Issue. He said that the Kashmir dispute had now become a flash point between the two nuclear neighbours. Later,addressing a meeting of the party workers,he claimed that Kashmir was running into the blood of the Pakistani nation. He urged the Pakistan government to globally pressurise India for ensuring the early implementation of the prolonged delayed UN Resolutions. He said that India should give the basic right of plebiscite to the people of the held valley. He vowed to make sincere efforts and even to sacrifice the last drop of his blood to save Pakistan from the enemies and to make Pakistan as a real Islamic welfare state as envisaged by the Quaid-i-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah. He strongly condemned the aggressive policy of India. He strongly criticised BJP government in India,alleging that the BJP was implementing the agenda to crush the Muslim in India. [11]
Azad Jammu and Kashmir,abbreviated as AJK and colloquially referred to as simply Azad Kashmir,is a region administered by Pakistan as a nominally self-governing entity and constituting the western portion of the larger Kashmir region,which has been the subject of a dispute between India and Pakistan since 1947. Azad Kashmir also shares borders with the Pakistani provinces of Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to the south and west,respectively. On its eastern side,Azad Kashmir is separated from the Indian union territory of Jammu and Kashmir by the Line of Control (LoC),which serves as the de facto border between the Indian- and Pakistani-controlled parts of Kashmir. Geographically,it covers a total area of 13,297 km2 (5,134 sq mi) and has a total population of 4,045,366 as per the 2017 national census.
Jamaat-e-Islami,or Jamaat as it is simply known,is an Islamist political party which is based in Pakistan and it is the Pakistani successor to Jamaat-e-Islami,which was founded in colonial India in 1941. Its objective is the transformation of Pakistan into an Islamic state,governed by Sharia law,through a gradual legal,and political process. JI strongly opposes capitalism,communism,liberalism,and secularism as well as economic practices such as offering bank interest. JI is a vanguard party:only "elite" supporters are members. Below them are "affiliates",and beneath them are "sympathizers". The party leader is called an ameer. Although it does not have a large popular following,the party is quite influential and considered one of the major Islamic movements in Pakistan,along with Deobandi and Barelvi.
The Kashmir conflict is a territorial conflict over the Kashmir region,primarily between India and Pakistan,and also between China and India in the northeastern portion of the region. The conflict started after the partition of India in 1947 as both India and Pakistan claimed the entirety of the former princely state of Jammu and Kashmir. It is a dispute over the region that escalated into three wars between India and Pakistan and several other armed skirmishes. India controls approximately 55% of the land area of the region that includes Jammu,the Kashmir Valley,most of Ladakh,the Siachen Glacier,and 70% of its population;Pakistan controls approximately 30% of the land area that includes Azad Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan;and China controls the remaining 15% of the land area that includes the Aksai Chin region,the mostly uninhabited Trans-Karakoram Tract,and part of the Demchok sector.
The Gilgit District is one of the 14 districts of Pakistan-administered territory of Gilgit-Baltistan in the disputed Kashmir region. The headquarters of the district is the town of Gilgit. According to the 1998 census,the Gilgit District had a population of 243,324. The district includes Gilgit,the Bagrot Valley,Juglot,Danyore,Sultanabad,Naltar Peak,and the Nomal Valley. The highest peak in the district is Distaghil Sar 7,885 metres (25,869 ft),which is the seventh-highest peak in Pakistan and 19th highest in the world.
Astore District is a district of Pakistan-administered Gilgit-Baltistan in the disputed Kashmir region. It is one of the 14 districts of the Pakistani-administered territory of Gilgit−Baltistan. Its administrative headquarters are located at Eidgah in the Astore Valley. The Astore District is bounded by Gilgit District to the north,Roundu District to the northeast,Skardu District to the east,Kharmang District to the southeast,Diamer District to the west,the Neelum District of Azad Jammu and Kashmir to the southwest,and the Bandipore District of Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir to the south.
Yasin Malik is a Kashmiri separatist leader and former militant who advocates the separation of Kashmir from both India and Pakistan. He is the Chairman of the Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front,which originally spearheaded armed militancy in the Kashmir Valley. Malik renounced violence in 1994 and adopted peaceful methods to come to a settlement of the Kashmir conflict. In May 2022,Malik pleaded guilty to charges of criminal conspiracy and waging war against the state,and was sentenced to life imprisonment.
Sultan Mehmood Chaudhry is an Azad Kashmiri politician who hails from Mirpur. He served as Prime Minister of Azad Kashmir between July 1996 to July 2001 and is currently serving as the President of Azad Kashmir since 25 August 2021.
Neelum is a district of Pakistan-administered Azad Kashmir in the disputed Kashmir region. It is the northernmost of 10 districts located within the Pakistani-administered territory of Azad Kashmir. Taking up the larger part of the Neelam Valley,the district has a population of around 191,000 people. It was among the worst-hit areas of Pakistan during the 2005 Kashmir earthquake.
Gilgit-Baltistan,formerly known as the Northern Areas,is a region administered by Pakistan as an administrative territory and consists of the northern portion of the larger Kashmir region,which has been the subject of a dispute between India and Pakistan since 1947 and between India and China since 1959. It borders Azad Kashmir to the south,the province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to the west,the Wakhan Corridor of Afghanistan to the north,the Xinjiang region of China to the east and northeast,and the Indian-administered union territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh to the southeast.
Raja Farooq Haider Khan is an Azad Kashmiri politician and former Prime Minister of Azad Jammu and Kashmir. He is a senior member of the Pakistan Muslim League (N).
The Hattian Bala District is a district of Pakistan-administered Azad Kashmir in the disputed Kashmir region. It is one of the ten districts of Azad Kashmir,Pakistan. The district's headquarters is the town of Hattian Bala. Prior to 2009,the Hattian Bala District was a tehsil within Muzaffarabad District.
Human rights abuses in Kashmir have been perpetrated by various belligerents in the territories controlled by both India and Pakistan since the two countries' conflict over the region began with their first war in 1947–1948,shortly after the partition of British India. The organized breaches of fundamental human rights in Kashmir are tied to the contested territorial status of the region,over which India and Pakistan have fought multiple wars. More specifically,the issue pertains to abuses committed in Indian-administered Kashmir and in Pakistani-administered Kashmir.
The Rondu District,also spelled Roundu District,is a district of Pakistan-administered Gilgit-Baltistan in the disputed Kashmir region. It is one of 14 districts of Gilgit-Balistan. The district encompasses the entire Roundu Valley,which is the fourth-largest valley in Gilgit-Baltistan,after the Skardu Valley,the Khaplu Valley,and the Shigar Valley The valley is situated in the western part of the Baltistan Division and forms the main trade and travel route between the Baltistan Division and the Gilgit Division. The Rondu District was created out of the Skardu District in 2019.
Sardar Muhammad Abdul Qayyum Khan was a Kashmiri politician who also served as the president and prime minister of Azad Kashmir. He also remained President of All Jammu and Kashmir Muslim Conference for over 20 years. He belonged to the Dhund-Abbassi Tribe.
Gilgit Division is an administrative division of Pakistan-administered Gilgit-Baltistan in the disputed Kashmir region. Gilgit is the divisional headquarters of Gilgit Division. Since divisions were restored back in 2008,the division currently consists on six districts:
Baltistan Division is a first-order administrative division of Pakistan-administered Gilgit-Baltistan in the disputed Kashmir region. It overlaps with the historical Baltistan.
The Ministry of Kashmir Affairs &Gilgit-Baltistan is a ministry of the Government of Pakistan. It handles the regional affairs of Azad Jammu and Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan as both territories of Pakistani-administered Kashmir do not have regular provincial status within Pakistan due to political circumstances revolving around the long-running Kashmir conflict.
Khalid Mahmood is the 5th Emir of Jamaat-e-Islami Kashmir. He was elected in June 2017 and took his oath of office on 16 July 2017 in Islamabad.
Diamer Division,also known as Diamer-Astore Division,is a first-order administrative division of Pakistan-administered Gilgit-Baltistan in the disputed Kashmir region.
The Gupis-Yasin District is a district of Pakistan-administered Azad Kashmir in the disputed Kashmir region. It is the westernmost district of the 14 districts of Pakistan-administered territory of Gilgit-Baltistan. The Gupis-Yasin District was created in 2019 from the Gupis Tehsil and the Yasin Tehsil,which were the two western tehsils of the former,larger Ghizer District.
