Abul Kalam Mohammad Ziaur Rahman is a major general of the Bangladesh Army and the executive chairman of the Bangladesh Export Processing Zones Authority (BEPZA). [1] Prior to join BEPZA, he was GOC of the 7th Infantry Division and Commander of Barishal Area. [2] He is a former Defence Advisor of the Bangladesh High Commission to India. [3]

Career

Rahman was the commander of 9 Artillery Brigade in Savar Cantonment while he was a brigadier general. [4] He served for the 'United Nations' twice. Once in Haiti and another in Sudan. [5]

Rahman was posted at the Defence Services Command and Staff College as the directing staff. [6] He taught at the Bangladesh Military Academy. [7]

Later, Rahman was appointed the Defence Advisor of the Bangladesh High Commission to India on 29 May 2017 replacing Brigadier general Md Abdul Hamid. [8] [9]

Rahman commanded the 7th Infantry Division. [6] On 7 November 2021, Rahman was appointed chairman of Bangladesh Export Processing Zones Authority. [6] He replaced Major General Md Nazrul Islam. [10] In December 2021, Rahman inaugurated hostels for women in Mongla Export Processing Zone. [11]

Rahman signed an agreement for the establishment of Big Dipper Textile Mills Limited, a Canadian-Chinese company, factory in Ishwardi Export Processing Zone worth US$91 million in 2022. [12] He saw the signing of an investment agreement with M/s Nova Intima Limited, British Virgin Islands-Hong Kong based company, to establish a factory worth US$28 million. [13]

The Bangladesh Army is the land warfare branch, and the largest component of the Bangladesh Armed Forces. The primary mission of the Army is to defend the land of Bangladesh from any external attack. Control of personnel and operations is administered by the Army Headquarters, Dhaka Cantonment. The Bangladesh Army is also constitutionally obligated to assist the government, during times of domestic national emergency e.g. the army helps people during any natural calamity. This additional role is commonly referred to as "aid to civil administration" or, using the Latin form, "Protectio, Transparentia, Reintegratio", in others words, "Protect and Serve".

The Bangladesh Export Processing Zones Authority (BEPZA) is an agency of the Government of Bangladesh and is administered under the jurisdiction of the Prime Minister's Office. Its objective is to manage the various export processing zones in Bangladesh. BEPZA currently oversees the operations of eight export processing zones (EPZ). A ninth zone is scheduled to open in the future. Recently government has announced that in 15 years 100 new EPZ and SEZ will be established. Major General Abul Kalam Mohammad Ziaur Rahman, ndc, psc is the current Executive Chairman of BEPZA. The Government provides numerous incentives for investors for opening factories in EPZs. For example, new factories enjoy tax holidays for 5 years. Also, labour unions and other activities that are often viewed detrimental to productivity, are banned inside the EPZs. In order to stimulate rapid economic growth of the country, particularly through industrialization, the government has adopted an 'Open Door Policy' to attract foreign investment to Bangladesh. The BEPZA is the official organ of the government to promote, attract and facilitate foreign investment in the EPZs. Besides, BEPZA as the competent Authority performs inspection & supervision of the compliances of the enterprises related to social & environmental issues, safety & security at work place in order to maintain harmonious labour-management & industrial relations in EPZs. The primary objective of an EPZ is to provide special areas where potential investors would find a congenial investment climate free from cumbersome procedures. Bangladesh's export revenue in FY23 is $55.55 billion, the highest amount ever.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Sayed Farooq Rahman</span> Bangladeshi army officer (1946–2010)

Sayed Farooq Rahman was the chief organizer involved in toppling the Sheikh Mujib regime in Bangladesh. He was convicted and hanged on 28 January 2010 along with co-conspirators Sultan Shahriar Rashid Khan, A.K.M. Mohiuddin Ahmed, Mohiuddin Ahmed, and Mohammad Bazlul Huda in Dhaka Central Jail, Old Dhaka, for the murder of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the founding leader and the first president of Bangladesh. Sayed Farooq Rahman and his close ally Khondaker Abdur Rashid were the chief organisers of the assassination of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on 15 August 1975. He was 2IC of the 1st Bengal Lancers Regiment of the Bangladesh Army who led a group of junior army officers in order to overthrow the regime of Sheikh Mujib and install Khondaker Mushtaque Ahmed as president of Bangladesh.

Assassination of Ziaur Rahman refers to the killing of Ziaur Rahman, the sixth president of Bangladesh and was assassinated by a faction of officers of Bangladesh Army, on 30 May 1981, in the southeastern port city of Chittagong. Rahman went to Chittagong to arbitrate in a clash between the local leaders of his political party, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP). On the night of 30 May, a group of officers commandeered the Chittagong Circuit House, a government residence where Rahman was staying, shooting him and several others.

Muhammed Abul ManzurBU was a Bangladeshi military officer who commanded the Bangladesh Forces operations in Sector 8 during the Bangladesh Liberation War against Pakistan in 1971. He was allegedly involved in the assassination of the then-president of Bangladesh, Ziaur Rahman. The erstwhile chief of army staff and alleged mastermind of Rahman's assassination, Hussain Muhammad Ershad, had put a standing shoot-to-kill order on Manzur's life—he was killed shortly after being captured at the border. About a year later, Ershad initiated a bloodless coup d'état and took over the central government, holding power until 1990.

The Chittagong Export Processing Zone (CEPZ) (Bengali: চট্টগ্রাম রপ্তানি প্রক্রিয়াকরণ অঞ্চল), also known as Chattogram EPZ, is the first and one of the eight export processing zones in Bangladesh. Established in 1983, it is located in South Halishahar, Chattogram. In 2010, CEPZ was ranked third globally in cost competitiveness and fourth in economic potential in a survey of the world’s 700 economic zones by FDi magazine. Sheikh Muhammad Abul Kalam Azad is a two star admiral of Bangladesh Navy and the current Commander of Dhaka Naval Area (COMDHAKA). Prior this appoinment, he was high commissioner of Bangladesh to Maldives. He is former Commander of Bangladesh Navy Fleet. <span class="mw-page-title-main">Presidency of Ziaur Rahman</span> President of Bangladesh (1977–1981)

Ziaur Rahman's tenure as the President of Bangladesh started with his acquisition of the presidency from Abu Sadat Mohammad Sayem on April 21, 1977 after the latter resigned from his position on health grounds. Zia became the President of Bangladesh at a time when Bangladesh was suffering from a host of challenges that included low productivity, food shortage that resulted in a famine in 1974, unsatisfactory economic growth, severe corruption and a polarized and turbulent political atmosphere after the assassination of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and his family members in a coup that was followed by a series of counter-coups in the military. He is credited as a solid administrator with pragmatic policies who contributed to the economic recovery of Bangladesh by liberalizing trade and promoting private sector investments.

Dhaka Export Processing Zone, is an export processing zone in Bangladesh. It is located in the Ashulia area of Savar Upazila, near the capital Dhaka. The zone was established in 1993, and in 1997, an expanded area was added. Covering 356.22 acres, it is the second-largest export processing zone in Bangladesh.
