Action 21 (Papiamento : Accion 21, A21) is an Aruban political party in the centre with its ideology based in liberalism and progressivism. The party's name is derived from its desire to be the party of the 21st century, as well as the fact it contests the 21 seats of the Parliament of Aruba and its first electoral participation was 25 June 2021. [1]

The party was founded on 18 December 2020 by Miguel Mansur, economist and financial expert. [2] The inspiration for the party originated with an article published 18 July 2020 by Mansur titled, "Status Aparte: The Road to Prosperity or Poverty?" [3] which questioned the effect of Aruba's self-governing autonomy since 1 January 1986. Its emergence was spurred on by the corona crisis and the uproar over Aruba's autonomy and self-reliance in the context of the reform package supervised by the Caribbean Body for Reform and Development (COHO). [4] [5] The spearheads of the party are the reactivation of the economy, the restructuring of the financial situation of Aruba and government reforms. [6] It stands for cooperation with the Netherlands and improving relations within the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

Accion 21 participated with a list of fourteen candidates during the 2021 elections in Aruba. [7] The party presented a progressive manifesto that championed free enterprise, fiscal reform, LGBT rights, open government, electoral law reform, abortion rights, euthanasia and legalization of cannabis. [8] The party received 3,410 votes in the 2021 elections and one seat in the eleventh Parliament of Aruba. [9] Shortly after the elections, three candidates withdrew from the party over internal disagreements. [10] [11] Party leader Miguel Mansur was the highest vote getter of all new political candidates. [12] The party is currently part of the opposition and continues to advocate for closer ties with the Netherlands, fiscal reform and against abuse of power, corruption and nepotism. [13]

The islands were obliged after several court rulings to register any marriage registered in the Kingdom, but this primarily considers residency rights, and they do not have to give same-sex marriages the same legal effect as opposite-sex marriages. Marriage in the European territory of the Netherlands, as well as in the Caribbean municipalities of Bonaire, Sint Eustatius and Saba, is open to any two people irrespective of sex.

Jossy Mehsen Mansur was the editor of the Papiamento-language newspaper Diario in Aruba. He wrote two dictionaries for the Papiamento language and a history of Aruba among other books.

Felipe Benito Tromp was the first governor of Aruba after Aruba received a status aparte within the Kingdom of the Netherlands. He worked as a teacher prior to becoming governor and served as Minister for Education in the Antilles (1958–1962). He took office as governor on 1 January 1986 and left office on 12 March 1992. He was succeeded by Olindo Koolman.

Papiamento has two standardised orthographies, one used on the island of Aruba and the other on the islands of Curaçao and Bonaire. The Aruban orthography is more etymological in nature, while the other is more phonemic. Among the differences between the two standards, one obvious difference is the way the name of the language is written. In Aruba it is written Papiamento, while in Curaçao and Bonaire it is written Papiamentu. The governments of Curaçao and Aruba formally standardised orthographic rules in 1976 and 1977, respectively.

Thijsen was member of the Parliament of Aruba for the People's Electoral Movement between 2005 and 2021, and served as its President between 2017 and 2021.
