The Accountant-General of the Federation is the administrative head of the treasury of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. [1] The office holder is often appointed by the President of Nigeria to serve a four years term in accordance with the constitution of the federal republic of Nigeria. [2] The office was established in 1988 under the Civil Services reorganization Decree No. 43 of the constitution of Nigeria. [3]
The office holder is charged with the responsibility to manage receipts and payments of the Republic of Nigeria and to ensure that a proper system of account exists in every department of the nation's treasury and to exercise general supervision over the receipts of public revenue and over the expenditure of the federal Government. Jonah Ogunniyi Otunla OFR was a Nigerian financial accountant who served as Accountant General of the Federation of Nigeria. He also served as board members of the Central Bank of Nigeria. Otunla died on 17 June 2024, at the age of 69.
Ahmed Idris is a Nigerian financial accountant who served as the accountant general of Nigeria. He was appointed accountant general on 25 June 2015, to succeed Jonah Ogunniyi Otunla who was sacked by president Muhammadu Buhari on allegedly misappropriating N2.5 billion of security agencies’ funds. Idris was re-appointed accountant general after Buhari won a second term in 2019 and was suspended from office on may 18 2022 by the nigerian finance minister for misappropriating the fund of 80 Billion naira.
Treasury Single Account (TSA) is a government financial policy to use a single bank account for all inflows of funds from all government agencies. The policy is in use in several countries around the world. Such a unified structure is recommended by the IMF, as all government funds are collected in one account which could reduce borrowing costs, extend credit and improve government's fiscal policy among other benefits to government. The IMF also recommends the establishment of a legal basis to ensure its robustness and stability.
MTN Group, a major multi-national telecom company based in Johannesburg, South Africa, was handed down a $5.2 billion fine by the Federal Government of Nigeria through the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC). The commission exercised section 20(1) of the Telephone Subscribers regulation (TSR) law on MTN, for not meeting the deadline set up by the Mobile network operators (MNOs) for disconnecting the Subscribers Identification Modules (SIM) with improper registration. The compliance audit carried out by the NCC on MTN network revealed unregistered 5.2 million customers lines un-deactivated. This led to the NCC fining MTN with the sum of $1000 for each unregistered SIM, which amounted to $5.2bn.

He served as the Commissioner for Finance in Oyo State from June 2011 to May 2015 and is currently the Executive Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS).
