Adam Peter Ritchie Handling MBE (born 17 September 1988 in Dundee, Scotland [1] ) is a British chef and restaurateur. He is the owner of the Adam Handling Restaurant Group of four food and drink venues in London, England .

Career

Handling started his culinary training aged 16 as apprentice chef at Gleneagles Hotel in Scotland. He went on to work in London before becoming sous chef at the Malmaison hotel in Newcastle. He then moved back to Scotland to become the Fairmont Group's head chef at the Fairmont St Andrews. [2] [3]

In 2013, Handling took on the role of head chef at St. Ermin's Hotel in St James's Park, London. From there, he entered and became a finalist in series 6 of Masterchef: The Professionals. [4]

In 2014, Handling officially opened Restaurant Adam Handling at Caxton, [5] which won a three rosettes award from the AA. [6] The next year, it was named Best Newcomer UK Restaurant by Food and Travel Magazine. [7]

Handling published his first cookbook in October 2014, entitled Smile or Get Out of the Kitchen, with a foreword by Masterchef judge Monica Galetti. [8]

In June 2016, Handling opened his first independent restaurant, The Frog, in Spitalfields, London, [9] [10] and appeared in series 11 of Great British Menu . [11]

In September 2017, Handling opened his flagship restaurant, Frog by Adam Handling in Covent Garden [12] and his first stand-alone bar, Eve Bar. [13]

Handling was chosen to cook for the G7 world leaders during the G7 Summit 2021 in Cornwall. In keeping with the goal of making the event “carbon-neutral,” most ingredients were sourced from within a 100-mile radius. [14]

In 2021, Handling opened his first restaurant outside London - The Loch & the Tyne, restaurant and pub with guest bedrooms in Old Windsor. [15] Later that year, he also opened Ugly Butterfly restaurant and bar in St. Ives, Cornwall. [16]

Handling published a set of three books in 2023, Frog by Adam Handling, Why Waste? and Perfect, Three Cherries. [17]

In March 2023, Handling was a guest judge of the segment Quickfire Challenge on Top Chef: World All Stars. [18] [19]

In April 2023, Handling won BBC's Great British Menu Champion of Champions award. [20]

Adam Handling created a trifle chosen as the official pudding for the Coronation of King Charles III in May 2023. It is made with Parkin, ginger custard and strawberry jelly. [21]

Restaurants

Adam Handling Restaurant Group operates four food and drink venues in London. The Group is committed to a zero waste policy and eventually eliminating all food waste by creating dishes from offcuts that are usually thrown away. [22] Frog by Adam Handling opened in September 2017, [23] alongside bar venue Eve Bar. [24] [25] [26]

The Group also launched Hame in May 2020, a home delivery service that provides their restaurant food at home and delivers nationally. [27]

The Group's first pub, The Loch and The Tyne in Old Windsor was opened in May 2021. [28] Handling opened his first restaurant and bar by the coast, Ugly Butterfly on the Carbis Bay Estate in St. Ives, Cornwall in August 2021. [29]

In July 2024, the company opened the Tartan Fox pub near Newquay in Cornwall. [30]

Honours and awards

Handling was appointed Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in the 2024 New Year Honours for services to hospitality and international trade. [31]

Jason Atherton is an English chef and restaurateur. His flagship restaurant Pollen Street Social gained a Michelin Star in 2011, its opening year. He was the Executive Chef at Gordon Ramsay's Michelin starred Maze in London until 30 April 2010. In 2014 he co-hosted the Sky Living TV series My Kitchen Rules.

Clare Smyth is a Northern Irish chef. She is the Chef Patron of three Michelin starred Core by Clare Smyth which opened in 2017. Previously she was Chef Patron at Restaurant Gordon Ramsay from 2012 to 2016, won the Chef of the Year award in 2013, and achieved a perfect score in the 2015 edition of the Good Food Guide. Smyth has also appeared on television shows such as Masterchef and Saturday Kitchen. Smyth also notably catered at Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's 2018 wedding.

Hibiscus was a London restaurant which was owned and run by French chef Claude Bosi. It was opened in 2000 in Ludlow, Shropshire, and won its first Michelin star within a year, and a second in the 2004 Guide. In July 2006, Bosi and his wife Claire announced that they were to sell the location in Ludlow and move closer to London. The property was sold to Alan Murchison, and Bosi purchased a new site on Maddox Street in London. The restaurant closed in 2016.

The Whitebrook, formerly known as The Crown at Whitebrook, is a restaurant with rooms in Whitebrook, 6 miles (9.7 km) south-south-east of Monmouth, Monmouthshire, Wales, near the River Wye and the border with England. The building is thought to date from the 17th century and by the 19th century it was used as a roadside inn. Its restaurant was run by Chef Patron James Sommerin until 2013; it gained a Michelin star in 2007. It contains eight double rooms and a 2-acre (0.81 ha) garden.

Pollen Street Social is a restaurant in London, England, run by chef Jason Atherton. It was Atherton's first UK solo restaurant, and in 2011 was named the best new UK restaurant by the Good Food Guide, and the best new fine-dining restaurant in London by Time Out. It currently holds one Michelin star, which it gained within a year of opening. Elements in the restaurant such as the dessert bar have been subsequently included in Atherton's other restaurants. On 22 March 2024, Atherton announced on Instagram that the restaurant would be closing permanently on 31 July 2024.

Michael O'Hare is a British chef from Middlesbrough, North Yorkshire, England. He was chef-patron at The Man Behind The Curtain in Leeds, which was awarded a Michelin star in October 2015. He also ran The Rabbit in the Moon at the National Football Museum in Manchester.

Paul Ainsworth is an English chef from Southampton, England. He is chef-patron at Paul Ainsworth at Number 6 in Padstow, Cornwall which was awarded a Michelin star in 2013 and has four AA Rosettes. After studying at catering college, Ainsworth worked for Gary Rhodes, Gordon Ramsay and Marcus Wareing.

Philip Howard is a South African-British chef, chef patron, and restaurateur. He gained cooking skills while working under Marco Pierre White at Harveys and Simon Hopkinson at Bibendum. Howard and White's then-business partner Nigel Platts-Martin opened London restaurant The Square in December 1991, despite both of their inexperience in operating a restaurant at the time.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">The Square (restaurant)</span> London fine dining restaurant

The Square was a London fine dining restaurant, opened on 13 December 1991 in St James's. Since its opening, it had been co-owned by chef Phil Howard and wine expert Nigel Platts-Martin. It also earned its first Michelin star in 1994 and retained it from then on. After relocating to Mayfair in February 1997, The Square won a second Michelin star in 1998, which it retained until 2016, the same year when Howard and Platts-Martin sold the restaurant to a company held by Marlon Abela. It regained its first Michelin star in 2017. It closed on 31 January 2020, causing the restaurant to lose its star the following year.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Tom Aikens</span> English Michelin-starred chef

Tom Aikens, also named Tom Aitkens, is an English Michelin-starred chef. Aikens briefly worked for chefs in London and Paris restaurants. Under his tenure from 1996 to 1999 as head chef and then chef patron, Pied à Terre earned its two Michelin stars in January 1997.
