Dr. Adian Husaini (born December 17, 1965) is an Islamic scholar from Indonesia. [2] [3]

He served on numerous organizations, including the chairman of the Council of Da'wah Islamiyah Indonesia (Indonesian Islamic Propagation Council), the secretary general of the Indonesian Committee for the Islamic World Solidarity (KISDI), the Indonesian Committee for Solidarity Palestine - Indonesian Ulema Council (KISP-MUI), the Commission on Religious Harmony of Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI), and a member of the board of Majlis Tabligh Muhammadiyah.

Early life

He obtained his Islamic education in Madrasah Diniyah Nurul Ilmi Bojonegoro from 1971 to 1977, [1] Pondok Pesantren Ar Rasyid Kendal Bojonegoro from 1981 to 1984, [4] Pondok Pesantren Ulil Albab Bogor from 1988 to 1989, Arabic Language Education Institute, and LIPIA Jakarta in 1988. [5]

His undergraduate degree in veterinary is from Bogor Agricultural University (IPB), while his master's degree in international relations is obtained from the Postgraduate Program of International Relations of Jayabaya University Jakarta, with a thesis entitled Pragmatism of Israeli Foreign Policy. He holds a doctorate from the Institute of Islamic Thought and Civilization-International Islamic University Malaysia (ISTAC-IIUM) in the field of Islamic thought and civilization. [1] [6]

Scholastic career

He worked as a researcher at the Indonesian Society for Middle East Studies (ISMES) Jakarta and the Institute for the Study of Islamic Thought & Civilizations (INSIST), and staff at the Center for Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies University of Indonesia (PKTTI-UI) Jakarta.

He has also been a journalist for Jakarta Daily News Buana, Republika Jakarta Daily, and a news analyst at Radio Muslim FM Jakarta, as well as a lecturer of Journalism and Islamic thought at the Ibnu Khaldun University of Bogor and Pesantren Tinggi (Ma'had 'Aly) Husnayain Jakarta.

He writes many books, with most of his works being the criticism against the perceived rise of the liberal Islamic movement, especially in Indonesia. His book Pluralisme Agama: Haram (Religious Pluralism: Haram) challenged the liberal and progressive criticisms of the 2005 fatwa by the Indonesian Ulema Council targeting religious pluralism. In his writings, he considers religious pluralism as an ideology that considers all religions to be true, thus undermining the legitimacy of Islam. [2] His book Christian-Western Hegemony in Islamic Studies in Higher Education was voted the 2nd best book of the Islamic Book Fair of 2007. At the same forum a year earlier, his book entitled The Face of Western Civilization: From Christian Hegemony to Secular-Liberal Dominance became the best non-fiction book.

Drs. Kyai Hajji Habib Ali Alwi bin Thohir Al Husainy is an Indonesian politician, da'i, Islamic scholar and founder of the Pondok Pesantren Modern Al-Husainy, Serpong, South Tangerang, Banten. At the election of regional head and deputy regional head of Tangerang Regency in 2008, Alwi was nominated by the Democrat Party and the National Awakening Party as a candidate for vice regent along with Usamah Hisyam as a candidate for regent, but this pair was defeated by incumbent candidate Ismet Iskandar with Rano Karno as his deputy. Currently, Alwi serves as a senator representing the province of Banten in the Regional Representative Council.

Habib Bahar bin Smith is a preacher from Manado, North Sulawesi. Bahar is the leader and founder of the Prophet's Defender Council headquartered in Pondok Aren, South Tangerang. In addition, he is also the founder of Pondok Pesantren Tajul Alawiyyin in Kemang, Bogor Regency. Bahar is known as a preacher who often provokes the masses in a negative way. In each of his lectures, Habib Bahar was always accompanied and closely guarded by Islamic Defenders Front (FPI), and he was frequently accompanied by the Multipurpose Ansor Front when he preached in a place where his people were affiliated with Nahdlatul Ulama.

In July 2005, Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI), a semi-official Islamic clerical body of Indonesia, issued a fatwa, or an Islamic legal opinion, against religious pluralism, liberalism, and secularism. The issuance of fatwa garnered substantial controversy and scholarly attention. The fatwa addressed the reformist trend of Islam which had been popular among the broad Indonesian society over the past 25 years. Such trends advocated for a more substantive reading of the Quran and Hadith, instead of literalist approaches taken by the majority of ulamas. MUI considered such ideas as incompatible with Islamic teaching, releasing the fatwa to promote a more literal reading of the Islamic scriptures. The fatwa was heavily criticized by progressive Muslim intellectuals.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Ahmad Muhtadi Dimyathi</span>

Abuya Kyai Hajji Ahmad Muhtadi bin Dimyathi al-Bantani or better known as Abuya Muhtadi is an Indonesian Muslim cleric from Banten. He is known as one of the Muslim scholars close to President Joko Widodo. At the Zikir Kebangsaan which was first held by the Indonesian government in the Merdeka Palace in 2017, Muhtadi was one of the religious leaders invited by the president. In the 2019 Indonesian presidential election, he supported a friend who was also a Muslim cleric from Banten, Ma'ruf Amin, who became the running mate of incumbent presidential candidate, Joko Widodo. Even so, in the 2014 Indonesian presidential election, he supported Prabowo Subianto as a candidate for Indonesian President and instructed his students to vote for Subianto.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Zubair Dahlan</span>

Kyai Hajji Zubair Dahlan was an Indonesian ulama of tafsir, fiqh, uṣūl al-fiqh, and tasawwuf from Rembang Regency, Central Java. Every year, in the month of Ramadan, Zubair always routinely teaches the Tafsir al-Jalalayn to his students. In addition, he also active in teaching branches of Arabic grammar and tawhid at the Pesantren Sarang. Zubair is the father of an influential cleric in Indonesia, Maimun Zubair, and a teacher of several Nahdlatul Ulama cleric such as Sahal Mahfudz, Bisri Syansuri, and others. Some of his students later became caregivers and leaders of famous pesantren in Indonesia, such as Pondok Pesantren Lirboyo, Pondok Pesantren Sidogiri, Pondok Pesantren Al-Falah Ploso, Pondok Pesantren Mranggen, and other pesantren.

KHR. As’ad Syamsul Arifin was an Indonesian ulama and co-founder of Nahdatul Ulama. In 2016, he was declared a National Hero of Indonesia.

Ma'had Al-Zaytun or Al-Zaytun Islamic Boarding School is an Islamic boarding school located in Indramayu Regency, West Java. This Islamic boarding school is a business of the Yayasan Pesantren Indonesia, which began construction on August 13, 1996. The initial opening of the lesson was held on July 1, 1999, and the general inauguration was held on August 27, 1999, by the 3rd President of Indonesia, BJ Habibie.
