Adriatic was launched in 1811 at Chester, Connecticut, the first vessel built in the town. The British Royal Navy seized her in July 1812. She was sold in 1813 and her new owners named her Vittoria. She traded with the West Indies, the Mediterranean, and the Indian Ocean, the last sailing under a licence from the British East India Company. She was last listed in 1834.

Adriatic

Adriatic was launched in 1811 on the Connecticut River. She was the first vessel built in the town. [6]

On 12 July 1812, shortly after the outbreak of war with the United States, HMS Avenger detained the American ships Adriatic, Pochahontas, and Triton. [lower-alpha 1]

Vittoria

The Prize Court condemned Adriatic. On 16 June 1813 Southam & Co. purchased her and renamed her. [3]

Vittorio first appeared in Lloyd's Register (LR) in 1813. [4] In 1813 the EIC had lost its monopoly on the trade between India and Britain. British ships were then free to sail to India or the Indian Ocean under a licence from the EIC. [8]

Vittoria, Southam, master, sailed from Portsmouth for the "South Seas" on 23 August 1813. [9] In August 1813, prior to sailing for Île de France (Mauritius), Southam purchased a quantity of "Preserved Meats, Soups, and Milk". He used a little on the outbound leg, but more on the return leg. His letter to the manufacturers, dated 15 January 1815 in London, endorsed the products for their ability to retain the original flavours. [10] [lower-alpha 2]

Vittoria next appeared in Lloyd's List 's ship arrival and departure data as returning from Philadelphia on 3 April 1815. On 17 July 1816 Vittoria arrived at New York from Jamaica.

On 23 August 1823, Vittoria, Southam, master, sailed for Bengal under a licence from the EIC. [11] She arrived at Calcutta on 13 January 1824. The Asiatic Journal and Monthly Register for British India and Its Dependencies reported that Vittoria was the first vessel under 300 tons that had reached Calcutta and that had sailed "under the new Act". The Journal further remarked that her captain and crew numbered only 14 men. [2]

On 14 April 1824, Vittoria, Southam, master, was among some 20 mercantile vessels that sailed from Madras for Rangoon to join the expedition against the Burmese. [12]

In May 1825 Vittoria, J.H.Southam, master, had to put back into Calcutta to be docked. She had been on her way from Bengal to Rangoon when she had grounded in the Hooghly. By 23 June she was at Penang.

On 3 June 1827, Vittoria, Southam, master, sailed for Batavia and Singapore.

  1. Avenger's crew received a grant of 2930 of the proceeds of the sale of all three vessels. A first-class share was worth £989 6s; a sixth-class share, that of an ordinary seaman, was worth £23 1s 4d. [7] That amount was more than an ordinary seaman's wage for a year.
  2. Bryan Donkin and John Hall operated as Donkin, Hall, and Gamble, of Bermondsley. Theirs was the first cannery in Britain to use tinned iron containers.

Albion was a sailing ship of two decks and three masts, built at Bristol, England, and launched in 1813. She made three voyages transporting convicts to Van Diemen's Land and New South Wales. She also traded with Jamaica, India, and Quebec. For two of the voyages to India she was an "extra" ship to the British East India Company (EIC).

Ocean was launched in 1802 at Quebec. She made five voyages under charter to the British East India Company (EIC) between 1804 and 1814. Her owners then sold her and she continued to sail between Britain and India under a license issued by the EIC. In 1815–1816 she made one voyage transporting convicts to Australia. Busiris was launched at Newcastle upon Tyne in 1814 as a West Indiaman. She made one voyage as an East Indiaman and then returned to the West Indies trade. She was wrecked in May 1826.

True Briton was launched at Pont Neuf, Quebec, in 1811. Her primary trade was sailing between Britain and New Brunswick, but she also sailed to Jamaica, and made two voyages to India. Her crew abandoned her in the Atlantic in 1822.

Sir James Henry Craig was launched at Quebec in 1811. She sailed to England and made three voyages as a West Indiaman. The British East India Company (EIC), in 1813 lost its monopoly on the trade between Britain and India. In 1817 she sailed for India but was condemned at Calcutta after she sustained extensive storm-damage at the start of her homeward-bound voyage.

Liverpool was launched at Calcutta in 1815. She traded between Britain and India under a license from the EIC, and was lost in May 1823.

Aberdeen was launched at Quebec in 1811. She sailed to England and then traded between Quebec and Britain. She made two voyages to India under license from the British East India Company (EIC). After her return from the second, in 1820, she was no longer listed.

Jane was launched in 1813 at Fort Gloucester, Calcutta. She transferred her registry to Britain and sailed between Britain and India or Batavia. She was last mentioned in 1820, though the registers continued to carry her until 1826.

Stentor was a British transport and merchant vessel launched in 1814 at Sunderland. In 1820 she transported settlers to South Africa. She made several journeys to India under a license from the British East India Company (EIC). As a transport she carried troops and supplies to such destinations as Sierra Leone, Fernando Po, Ceylon, and the West Indies. She was wrecked in November 1846.

Marchioness Wellesley was launched at Calcutta in 1805. She initially sailed as a country ship, i.e., trading east of the Cape of Good Hope. She participated in the 1811 British military expedition to Java. In 1815 she sailed to England and then sailed between England and India under a license from the British East India Company (EIC). She was broken up in 1821 or 1824.

Princess Charlotte was launched in 1815 at Whitehaven. She made several voyages to India, sailing under a license issued by the British East India Company (EIC). She was last listed in 1841, though she apparently sailed for at least another two years.

Indian Oak was launched at Cochin, probably in 1813. She then traded between India and Britain. From circa 1824 she operated as a "country ship" trading primarily in the Indian Ocean. Notable events included arson by the crew, a dispute between her master and the government of Mauritius, transport of 200 labourers from Bengal to Mauritius, and mutiny that resulted in the cutting and maiming of her master. She was wrecked in August 1840 after having delivered troops to Chusan for the First Opium War.

Swallow was launched at Calcutta in 1813. She sailed to England and then traded between England and India under a license from the British East India Company (EIC) through 1824. She returned to Calcutta registry and at some point after 1824 was sold in Java.

David Scott was launched at Bombay in 1801. She was a "country ship", i.e., she generally traded east of the Cape of Good Hope. Between 1802 and 1816 she made five voyages between India and the United Kingdom as an "extra ship" for the British East India Company (EIC). Thereafter she traded between Britain and India under a license from the EIC. A fire destroyed her at Mauritius on 12 June 1841.

<i>Clydesdale</i> (1819 ship)

The ship Clydesdale was launched at Bay of Quick, Greenock in 1819. She sailed as an East Indiaman under a licence from the British East India Company (EIC). She was condemned at Mauritius circa June 1827 as unseaworthy while homeward bound from Bengal.

Alcyone, was launched in France in 1810 and under another name. She was taken in prize. Waters & Co. purchased her in 1814 and renamed her. She initially sailed to Asia and India under a licence from the British East India Company, and was the first vessel to formally to receive such a licence. She then sailed between London and the Cape of Good Hope. She was last listed in 1824.

Sappho was launched in Whitby in 1813, and moved her registration to London in 1814. Thereafter she traded widely. She made a voyage to Bombay and one to Bengal, sailing under a licence from the British East India Company (EIC). She was last listed in 1833.

Indus was launched in 1803 at Newcastle on Tyne. In 1804 the British East India Company (EIC) hired her for six voyages to India as an "extra ship". She completed the last of these six voyages in 1814. Thereafter she continued to trade with India, but privately, sailing under a licence from the EIC. She was last listed in 1823.

Bengal was launched at Greenock in February 1815. She was the first vessel built in Scotland for the East India trade. She immediately made three voyages to India, sailing under a licence from the British East India Company (EIC). She then traded with the United States, alternating that with other voyages to India. In 1819, on one voyage to India, she was anchored at Calcutta and the venue for a party that resulted in her captain, surgeon, and about a fifth of the guests all dying within days of an unknown disease. She was wrecked in about 1847.
