Afia Neliah Charles (born July 22, 1992) [1] is a sprinter from Antigua and Barbuda who specializes in the 400 metre dash.
Charles is from Greenbelt, Maryland, United States but her mother Ruperta, was born in Antigua and competed for the nation at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. [2] [3] As of 2012 [update] , Charles is 5 feet 7 inches (1.70 m) tall. [2] She currently attends the University of Central Florida (UCF), where she competes for the UCF Knights track and field team. [3]
Charles went to Eleanor Roosevelt High School where she won the 4 × 400 metres relay in the 2008 Championship of America contested at the Penn Relays. [4] In her freshman year she won the bronze medal in the 400 metres at the 2011 CARIFTA Games held in Montego Bay, Jamaica; competing for Antigua she set a new personal best time of 54.23 seconds. [2] [5] She broke the freshman and school records for the outdoor 400 metres, setting a time of 53.6 seconds and was a member of the 47 × 400 metres relay team that competed at the 2011 NCAA Women's Indoor Track and Field Championship. [2] In her sophomore year she set another school record by running 54.17 seconds on her way to winning the gold medal in the 400 meters at the C-USA Indoor Championships. [2] She was coached at UCF by Caryl Smith Gilbert. [3]
In July 2011 she was selected to represent Antigua and Barbuda at the 2012 Summer Olympics in the women's 400 metres. [3] The event was held at the Olympic Stadium from 3 to 5 August. [6] To prepare for the Games Charles worked with Dee Dee Trotter, an Olympic gold medalist at the 2004 Summer Olympics in the 4 × 400 metres relay who had qualified for the 2012 United States team and is a friend of Smith Gilbert from their time together at the University of Tennessee. Debbie Ferguson-McKenzie is a former Bahamian sprint athlete who specialised in the 100 and 200 metres. Ferguson-McKenzie participated in five Olympics.
Veronica Campbell Brown CD is a retired Jamaican track and field sprinter, who specialized in the 100 and 200 meters. An eight-time Olympic medalist, she is the second of three women in history to win two consecutive Olympic 200 m events, after Bärbel Wöckel of Germany at the 1976 and 1980 Olympics and before fellow countrywoman Elaine Thompson-Herah at the 2016 and 2020 Olympics. Campbell Brown is one of only nine athletes to win world championships at the youth, junior, and senior level of an athletic event.
De'Hashia Tonnek "DeeDee" Trotter is an American athlete. Trotter is a former NCAA national champion in the 400m, and competed in the 2004, 2008, and 2012 Summer Olympics. There, she was a two-time Olympic gold medalist in the 4 × 400 m relay, in addition to a bronze medalist in the 2012 400m event. She placed 5th in the same event in 2004. Trotter is currently a brand ambassador for international company Education First, and a global motivational speaker.
Pauline Elaine Davis-Thompson is a former Bahamian sprinter. She competed at five Olympics, a rarity for a track and field athlete. She won her first medal at her fourth Olympics and her first gold medals at her fifth Olympics at age 34 in the 4 × 100 m Relay and, after Marion Jones' belated disqualification nine years later, in the 200m.
Daniel Bakka Everton Bailey is a sprinter from Antigua and Barbuda who specializes in the 100m.
Nataliya Pyhyda is a Ukrainian track and field sprinter who specializes in the 200 and 400 metres. Her personal best times are 22.82 seconds (2008) and 50.62 seconds (2015), respectively.
Antonina Yefremova is a Ukrainian sprinter who specializes in the 400 metres. Yefremova received a two-year ban in 2012 for using testosterone at the 2011 World Athletics Championships.
