Contents

Development

The game was developed by Vladimír Kudělka who worked on it for almost 7 years. [2] He was inspired by paintings by Zdeněk Burian, Salvador Dalí and books on quantum physics. [3] The initial impulse for development was Zdenek Burian's illustration for the short story "Friends from Hadonoš" showing a small astronaut standing in front of a mass into which another figure is diving. The game visually references Salvador Dalí's work "Corpus hypercubus" which depicts Jesus Christ crucified on a tesseract or hypercube network. [4] The game was announced in September 2021 [5] and released on 9 December 2022. [6]

Gameplay

Player controls an astronaut on his multidimensional journey for an alien civilization. Player can just walk with his character. The game doesn't allow them to do anything else. Player's task is to figure out which way to go to progress to the next level. [7]

Reception

Afterglitch was nominated for the Nuovo Award and Excellence in Visual Art at 2023 Independent Games Festival. [8]

The video game industry in the Czech Republic has produced numerous globally successful video games such as Operation Flashpoint: Cold War Crisis and the subsequent ArmA series, the Mafia series, Truck Simulator series, the Kingdom Come: Deliverance series, the Samorost series and others. There were 300–400 video game developers and around 30 video game companies focusing on video game development in 2014. In 2017, the country had 1,100 developers and 47 companies. Video games are also considered by some experts to be the country's biggest cultural export. The video game industry did not enjoy a good reputation and was unsupported by the state until 2013, when the Ministry of Industry and Trade started to seek ways to kickstart the economy. By 2014, programs were planned to support the video game industry. Another problem is a lack of video game development specialization at any university.
