Aishath Afreen Mohamed (born 1984 or 1985) is a Maldivian public figure and former human rights worker, who is the spouse of the vice president of the Maldives since November 2024, as the wife of vice president Hussain Mohamed Latheef.
On 11 August 2015, Afreen was approved by the People's Majlis to serve as a commissioner of Human Rights Commission of the Maldives for a 5–year term. [1] She was then appointed to serve the post, by then–president Abdulla Yameen and was sworn in on 17 August. Along with other members, her oath of office were administered by chief justice Abdulla Saeed. [2] Following the end of her term as commissioner, she resigned on 12 July 2020. [3] [4] [5] [6]
Afreen became the second lady of the Maldives on 17 November 2023. [7] As second lady, Afreen has been a prominent figure, participating in various activities including officiating ceremonies and delivering speeches. [8] [9]

Maumoon Abdul Gayoom is a Maldivian politician and islamic scholar who served as President of the Maldives from 1978 to 2008. After serving as transport minister, he was nominated president by the People's Majlis and succeeded Ibrahim Nasir in 1978. He was defeated in 2008 during the first Presidential Elections after democratic reforms in the Maldives. He holds the nations highest award, "The Most Honourable Order of the Distinguished Rule of Ghazi", presented to him in 2013. Maumoon was the longest-serving president in Asia.

The 2011–2013 Maldives political crisis began as a series of peaceful protests that broke out in the Maldives on 1 May 2011. They would continue, eventually escalating into the resignation of President Mohamed Nasheed in disputed circumstances in February 2012. Demonstrators were protesting what they considered the government's mismanagement of the economy and were calling for the ouster of President Nasheed. The main political opposition party in the country, the Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party led by the former president of the country Maumoon Abdul Gayoom accused President Nasheed of "talking about democracy but not putting it into practice." He also served as a member of the National Human Rights Commission of the Maldives from 2003 to 2005.
