Ajmal Shams is an Afghan politician and former civil engineer.
Shams has been president of the Afghan Social Democratic Party since October 2005. [1] [2] He served as Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Urban Development and Housing in the Afghan Government since December 2016 till June 2018. [3] He speaks Pashto,Persian,English and Urdu.
He is a certified Project Management Professional (PMP) with Project Management Institute (PMI) and a Licensed Professional Engineer in the state of Kentucky,USA. [4]
Shams is a regular columnist in the Middle East's reputed English daily newspaper Arab News mainly writing on political,developmental and economic issues of Afghanistan. He also contributes opinion articles for various other international media outlets including Foreign Policy,Diplomat,National Interest,Gulf News,Global Times (China),Korea Times and others. Shams is an ethnic Pashtun. His father was the late Shamsul Huda Shams,the former president of the Afghan Social Democratic (Mellat) Party. [8]
Shams pursued his education in Peshawar,graduated from the University of Engineering and Technology,Peshawar with a B.Sc. degree in civil engineering. Upon graduation he worked as a lecturer at Khyber Institute of Technology. He taught for several years. He studied Water Resources and Environmental Engineering in the United States. In 2002,he obtained his master's degree in civil engineering from South Dakota School of Mines and Technology. He worked as an environmental engineer for a consulting engineering firm in Florida for about a year before returning home to participate in the reconstruction and development of his homeland.
Shams worked for about two years as head of the water resources section of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in Kabul and served briefly as Head of the Engineering Department of the National Solidarity Program in the Ministry of Rural Rehabilitation and Development.
In 2007,Eng. Shams went to United Arab Emirates (UAE) in a senior engineering position where he participated in large-scale infrastructure projects including the Sheikh Zyed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi. In 2009,he returned to Afghanistan and rejoined the Ministry of Rural Development where he served in the reputed National Solidarity Program for about a year.
In September 2010,Shams joined Ministry of Urban Development as Director of Planning and Policy. He was instrumental in negotiating the US Government support for Afghanistan's land reform program. On 8 June 2011,the US Government provided $40 million in financial support to the Afghan Government as part of efforts to bring reforms in the land management and administration. The aid agreement was signed by Mr. Shams together with the US Ambassador Mr. Karl Eikenberry,the USAID Director,Minister Zakhilwal and Minister Asif Rahimi. [9]
In July 2011,Shams joined as Policy Advisor to the Chairman of the Afghanistan Transition Coordination Commission,Dr. Ashraf Ghani,the current President of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan. [10] Ajmal Shams was appointed as Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Urban Development and Housing by President Ashraf Ghani in December 2016 and served till June 2018. [11]
Shams has been president of Afghanistan Social Democratic Party since October 2005. He was elected by the party congress soon after his father's demise. [12] Afghanistan Social Democratic Party,since its establishment in 1966,has been struggling peacefully for a developed and progressive Afghanistan within the framework of Afghanistan's national Islamic character. The party strongly believes in social justice as part of its economic program. [13] Afghanistan Social Democratic Party,which is also well known as Afghan Millat National Progressive Party,was registered by the Afghan Ministry of Justice in 2007. [14]
During the 2014 Presidential Election,Shams' party supported Ashraf Ghani and actively participated in his campaign efforts. [15] [16]
Dr. Ahmad Yusuf Nuristani is a former politician from Afghanistan. He served as governor of Herat province from January 2009 to August 2010. In September 2018,President Ashraf Ghani appointed Nuristani to the Meshrano Jirga,the upper body of parliament in Afghanistan. From 2005 to 2008 he was the 1st Deputy Defense Minister,Government of Afghanistan. He was recently convicted in the United States and in Afghanistan.

The Afghan Social Democratic Party,more commonly known as the Afghan Mellat Party or simply the Afghan Mellat,is a Pashtun nationalist political party in Afghanistan. The party's leadership describes it as social democratic,although it has been historically described as 'ethno fascist' by observers. The party's current leader is Stanagul Sherzad,who became the new leader after the 6th party congress on October 3,2012.
Shams-ul-Huda Shams was the president of the Afghan Millat Party from 1987 until his death on October 9,2005. He was also a journalist,publishing articles in his party's newspaper called 'Afghan Millat'. Shams had recently returned to his homeland after twenty-seven years in exile and had opened an office for his party in Jalalabad.
Mohammad Haneef Atmar is an Afghan politician and former KhAD agent. He served as the Minister of interior until he was removed from the Ministry by Hamid Karzai in the wake of attacks on the June 2010 Afghan Peace Jirga. Before that he worked with several international humanitarian organisations and served as Minister of Rural Rehabilitation and Development and Minister of Education. In 2011,he was part of the Right and Justice party. During his time in office,he has visited several countries to get funding to stabilise Afghanistan.
Raja Pervaiz Ashraf is a Punjabi Pakistani politician,businessman and agriculturist who served as the 19th Prime Minister of Pakistan from June 2012 to March 2013 and as the Speaker of the National Assembly from April 2022 to March 2024. Ashraf was a member of the National Assembly of Pakistan from NA-58 (Rawalpindi-II). He has also served as the Senior Vice President of the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM),an alliance of political parties opposed to Imran Khan's PTI party.
Mohammad Umer Daudzai is a politician in Afghanistan,most recently having served as President Ashraf Ghani's Special Envoy for Regional Consensus Building on Peace and as Head of the High Peace Council (HPC) Secretariat for a few months,until he was appointed as President Ghani's Campaign Manager for the 2019 Presidential elections. After a career with international non-governmental organizations including the United Nations Development Program in Geneva,Daudzai started work as two term Chief of Staff of Afghan President Hamid Karzai from 2003 to 2005 and then from 2007 to around 2010. From 2005 until 2007,President Karzai appointed him as Afghan Ambassador in Iran. He then served as the Afghan Ambassador to Pakistan,tasked with advancing efforts to reach a political solution to the war in Afghanistan. In September 2013,Daudzai was asked to serve as Afghan Minister of Interior in Kabul and ensure security for the challenging 2014 presidential elections.
Mohammad Yousef Pashtun is an Afghan technocrat and politician. He served as Minister of Urban Development and Housing for two terms and as Governor of Kandahar province in 2003,replacing Gul Agha Sherzai under President Hamid Karzai's administration. In 2010,he was appointed as Senior Adviser to President Karzai on Construction,Mines,Water &Energy. In 2014,minister Pashtun continued to serve as Senior Adviser to President Ashraf Ghani. Yِousef Pashtun is also chairing the Kabul New City Development Authority Board.
Abdullah Abdullah is a Pashtun Afghan politician who led the High Council for National Reconciliation (HCNR) from May 2020 until August 2021,when the Afghan government was overthrown by the Taliban. The council had been established to facilitate peace talks between the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan and the Taliban insurgents. Abdullah served as the Chief Executive of Afghanistan from September 2014 to March 2020,and as Minister of Foreign Affairs from December 2001 to April 2005. Prior to that,he was a senior member of the Northern Alliance,working as an adviser to Ahmad Shah Massoud. He worked as an ophthalmologist and medical doctor in the 1980s.
Mohammed Masoom Stanekzai is a former Minister,Chief Peace Negotiator,and chief of the National Directorate of Security (NDS) of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan.
Dr. Hazrat Omar Zakhilwal is an Afghan politician who served as the President's Special Representative and Afghanistan's Ambassador to Pakistan from 2016 until 2018. He also served as Minister of Finance from 2009 to 2015. Since early 2019,Zakhilwal has been a key player in the IntraAfghan Dialogue for peace.
Dr. Zabihullah Mojaddidy is an Afghan politician. He served as the Governor of Kabul Province between July 2009 and until resigning in March 2011. His resignation was due to a lack of support from development ministries and the Presidential Palace in regard to his ideas for the reconstruction of Kabul City. Prior to becoming governor,he served as the Deputy Minister of Higher Education.
The National Solidarity Party of Afghanistan or some other places written as National Unity Party of Afghanistan is a political party representing the Afghanistan's Ismaili Shia minority,largely found in Kabul Province,Baghlan Province,Bamyan Province,Balkh Province and Badakhshan province. As recently as 2020 it was one of 84 political parties registered with the Afghan Ministry of Justice,and headed by Sayed Mansur Naderi.

State Ministry for Peace Affairs,officially known as State Ministry for Peace (SMP) was an Afghan government ministry responsible for peace process focused on to end ongoing wars in Afghanistan diplomatically. Founded in July 2019 by the government of Afghanistan,it advocated peace negotiations and future political stability in the country.
