Aku Kauste (born 17 November 1979) is a Finnish curler from Helsinki. He is currently the skip for the national team of Finland. Kauste is one of the most successful curling players in Finland, with over 20 medals in the Finnish Curling Championships (juniors, men's, mixed, mixed doubles). [1]

Career

Kauste started curling in 1994 with his father Timo Kauste. In 1998, Kauste made his first international appearance at the World Junior Curling Championships. [1] [2]

Kauste played in the 2002 [3] and 2003 [4] World Curling Championships with Team Finland, skipped by Markku Uusipaavalniemi. He has played in the European Curling Championships four times; in a team skipped by Uusipaavalniemi in 2002, [5] and 2004 [6] in a team skipped by Tomi Rantamäki in 2009, [7] and as skip in 2012 where he won the Group B competitions, promoting Finland to the Group A competitions in 2013. [8]

Kauste skipped Team Finland at the 2012 European Mixed Curling Championship where Finland won bronze. The other players of the medal team were Aku's sister Oona Kauste, Pauli Jäämies and Sanna Puustinen. [9]

Curling at the 2006 Winter Olympics was held in the town of Pinerolo, Italy from February 13 to February 24. It proved to be the sleeper hit in terms of television ratings in Italy. According to a CBC feature, curling at the 2006 Winter Games drew 5 million viewers, eclipsing ice hockey and figure skating. This, and the success of the Italian men's curling team created a surge of interest in curling within Italy, where there was no previous tradition of the sport and only a few hundred players.

The men's tournament of the 2012 European Curling Championships was held at the Löfbergs Lila Arena and the Karlstad Curling Club in Karlstad, Sweden from December 7 to 15. The winners of the Group C tournament in Erzurum, Turkey moved on to the Group B tournament. The top eight men's teams at the 2012 European Curling Championships, Sweden, the Czech Republic, Norway, Denmark, Russia, Switzerland, Scotland, and Finland, represented their respective nations at the 2013 World Men's Curling Championship in Victoria, British Columbia.

The women's tournament of the 2012 European Curling Championships was held at the Löfbergs Lila Arena and the Karlstad Curling Club in Karlstad, Sweden from December 7 to 15. The winners of the Group C tournament in Erzurum, Turkey moved on to the Group B tournament. The top seven women's teams at the 2012 European Curling Championships, Russia, Scotland, Sweden, Denmark, Switzerland, Italy and Germany, will represent their respective nations at the 2013 World Women's Curling Championship in Riga, Latvia.

The qualification event of the 2013 World Wheelchair Curling Championship was held from November 3 to 8, 2012 at the Kisakallio Sports Institute in Lohja, Finland, which hosted the qualification tournaments for the past two World Wheelchair Curling Championships. The qualification event was open to any World Curling Federation affiliated national team not already qualified. The event's two top finishers, Norway and Finland, will join the top 8 finishers from the last World Wheelchair Curling Championship at this season's event in Sochi, Russia.

Curling is a minor sport in Turkey. It is governed by the Turkish Ice Skating Federation and has been a member of the World Curling Federation since 2009. The country has one dedicated curling venue, the Milli Piyango Curling Arena in Erzurum. Turkey is ranked 39th in the world in men's curling and 31st in women's.

Oona Kauste is a Finnish curler from Helsinki. She is currently the skip of the Finnish National Women's team.

Pauli Jäämies is a Finnish curler from Helsinki. He currently plays for the Finnish national team, skipped by Aku Kauste. He is known for sporting long black dreadlocks.

Kasper Hakunti is a Finnish curler. Hakunti competed at the 2015 Ford World Men's Curling Championship in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, as vice-skip for the Finnish national curling team. Hakunti previously curled with Markku Uusipaavalniemi from 2009–11, and was the fourth for the Finnish team at the 2010 World Junior Curling Championships in Flims, Switzerland leading them to a 7th-place finish.

Milja Hellsten is a Finnish curler from Hyvinkää. She currently plays third for Oona Kauste.

Maija Salmiovirta is a Finnish curler. She currently plays second for Oona Kauste.

Marjo Hippi is a Finnish curler from Helsinki. She currently plays lead for Oona Kauste.

Magnus Victor Nedregotten is a Norwegian curler. He currently plays second for the Steffen Walstad rink.

Johanna Maria Heldin is a Swedish curler.

Kroy Everett Nernberger is an American curler from Madison, Wisconsin. He was a bronze medalist at the 2016 World Men's Curling Championship as alternate on John Shuster's Team USA.
