History

The hospital was damaged by Israeli forces in 2009, during the Gaza war of 2008-2009. [2]

The hospital was damaged again as part of the 2023 Gaza war. On 11 November, fighting was reported at the hospital. [3] The Palestinian Red Crescent Society reported that Israeli tanks approached the hospital, and began firing upon it. [4] [5] They reported that about 14,000 displaced people were sheltering inside of it at the time of the fighting. [4] [5] Evangelical Christian website All Israel News reported that a Hamas battalion operating from the hospital ambushed IDF troops; saying that 21 militants were killed whereas the Israelis suffered no casualties. [6] The clash was filmed by a drone scrambled from nearby. [6]

In the early morning of 12 November, an Israeli attack hit near the hospital and damaged it. [7] Later that day, the Palestine Red Crescent Society announced that the hospital had ran out of fuel and ceased treating patients. [8] [9] On 13 November, Palestine Red Crescent Society condemned allegations that Hamas was attacking from the hospital saying the video from the drone only showed them in the street outside the hospital. Even before the outbreak of the Al-Aqsa Intifada, various insurgent Palestinian groups built domestically-produced weapons for attacks against Israel. The 2014 Gaza War, also known as Operation Protective Edge, and Battle of the Withered Grain was a military operation launched by Israel on 8 July 2014 in the Gaza Strip, a Palestinian territory that has been governed by Hamas since 2007. Following the kidnapping and murder of three Israeli teenagers in the West Bank by Hamas-affiliated Palestinian militants, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) initiated Operation Brother's Keeper, in which some 350 Palestinians, including nearly all of the active Hamas militants in the West Bank, were arrested. Hamas subsequently fired a greater number of rockets into Israel from the Gaza Strip, triggering a seven-week-long conflict between the two sides. It was one of the deadliest outbreaks of open conflict between Israel and the Palestinians in decades. The combination of Palestinian rocket attacks and Israeli airstrikes resulted in over two thousand deaths, the vast majority of which were Gazan Palestinians. This includes a total of 6 Israeli civilians who were killed as a result of the conflict.

An armed conflict between Israel and Hamas-led Palestinian militant groups has been taking place chiefly in and around the Gaza Strip since 7 October 2023. After clearing Hamas militants from its territory, the Israeli military embarked on an extensive aerial bombardment of the Gaza Strip followed by a large-scale ground invasion beginning on 27 October. These hostilities constitute the fifth war of the Gaza–Israel conflict, which is part of the broader Israeli–Palestinian conflict. During the 2023 Israel–Hamas war, the Israeli military ordered all communities north of the Wadi Gaza, including Gaza City, to evacuate southward. Beginning on 1 December, Israel began issuing evacuation orders across the Gaza Strip, dividing the territory into 620 zones. The UN stated residents were being pushed into an area one-third the size of the total territory. Israel initially demanded the 1.1 million residents of northern Gaza to evacuate within 24 hours, which was condemned by the UN as "impossible without devastating humanitarian consequences." The UN said the order created "chaos". The order came one week after an offensive on Israel from Gaza was mounted by Hamas.
