The Alabama State Hornets baseball team is the varsity intercollegiate baseball program of Alabama State University in Montgomery, Alabama, United States. The program's first season was in 1926, and it has been a member of the NCAA Division I Southwestern Athletic Conference since the start of the 1983 season. Its home venue is the Wheeler–Watkins Baseball Complex, located on Alabama State's campus. José Vázquez is the team's head coach starting in the 2017 season. The program has appeared in 2 NCAA Tournaments. It has won two conference tournament championships and 1 regular season conference title. As of the start of the 2018 Major League Baseball season, 1 former Hornet has appeared in Major League Baseball.

History

Early history

The program's first season of play was 1926.

The Hornets won their first ever SWAC title in 2016 and made their first appearance in the NCAA Division I baseball tournament, falling to #16 Florida State and South Alabama in the Tallahassee Regional. The Hornets won a second SWAC title in 2022 before bowing out to #1 Tennessee and Georgia Tech in the Knoxville Regional.

Wheeler–Watkins Baseball Complex

The venue is named for two former Alabama State baseball coaches, Herbert Wheeler and Larry Watkins. Opened in March 2011, the facility has a capacity of 500 spectators. [1] [2]

The venue is named for two former Alabama State baseball coaches, Herbert Wheeler and Larry Watkins. Opened in March 2011, the facility has a capacity of 500 spectators.

The Southwestern Athletic Conference baseball tournament decides the conference baseball championship of the NCAA Division I Southwestern Athletic Conference. The top four finishers in each conference division participate in a two-bracket, double-elimination tournament, most recently played in Birmingham, Alabama, between May 25 and May 29, 2022. The winner of the tournament receives an automatic berth to the NCAA tournament and, since 2019, to the HBCU World Series.

The 2019–20 Alabama State Hornets basketball team represented Alabama State University in the 2019–20 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. The Hornets, led by 15th-year head coach Lewis Jackson, played their home games at the Dunn–Oliver Acadome in Montgomery, Alabama as members of the Southwestern Athletic Conference. They finished the season 8–24 and 7–11 in SWAC play to finish in seventh place. They lost in the first round of the SWAC tournament to Southern.

The 2010–11 Alabama State Hornets basketball team represented Alabama State University during the 2010–11 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. The Hornets, led by sixth-year head coach Lewis Jackson, played their home games at the Dunn–Oliver Acadome in Montgomery, Alabama as members of the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC). After finishing fourth in the SWAC regular season standings, the Hornets won the SWAC tournament, earning the opportunity to play in the NCAA tournament. Alabama State was beaten in the First Four by UTSA to finish the season 17–18.

The 2021 SWAC women's soccer tournament was the postseason women's soccer tournament for the Southwestern Athletic Conference held November 4–7, 2021. The seven-match tournament took place at the Prairie View A&M Soccer Stadium in Prairie View, Texas. The eight-team single-elimination tournament consisted of three rounds based on seeding from regular season conference play. The defending champions were the Alabama State Hornets, however they were unable to defend their title, losing 3–0 to the Prairie View A&M Panthers in the Semifinals. Prairie View A&M went on to win the tournament, defeating Grambling State in a penalty shoot-out in the Final. The conference tournament title was the second in the history of the Paririe View A&M women's soccer program, both of which have come under head coach Sonia Curvelo. As tournament champions, Prairie View A&M earned the SWAC's automatic berth into the 2021 NCAA Division I Women's Soccer Tournament.

The 2008–09 Alabama State Hornets basketball team represented Alabama State University in the 2008–09 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. The Hornets, led by head coach Lewis Jackson, played their home games at Dunn–Oliver Acadome in Montgomery, Alabama, as members of the Southwestern Athletic Conference. The Hornets won the SWAC regular season title, then won the 2009 SWAC tournament to earn an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament as a 16th seed in the Midwest region. Alabama State played in the Opening Round game, losing to Morehead State, 58–43.
