Alain Gresh (born 1948 in Cairo, Egypt) is a French communist party leader and journalist.

He is the former editor of Le Monde Diplomatique . He writes articles mainly on the Islamic world and the Arab world. [1] Alongside his career, he is a Palestinian nationalist activist. [2]

Biography

Alain Gresh was raised in Cairo, Egypt. At the age of 14, he moved to Paris to study mathematics and Arabic. As soon as he arrived in France, he joined the French Communist Party youth. [3]

After graduating from high school, he became the leader of the French communist youth. In 1978, he became secretary general of the World Festival of Youth and Students in Havana.

He was later named in charge of the French Communist Party foreign policy department. He continued studying the Near East in college, and wrote his PhD dissertation on the Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO). [4] In 2007, he admitted he had regular meeting with leaders of the Soviet Union. Gresh claims he created the first pro-Palestinian Organization in France after Moscow decided to change its foreign policy. [5]

He was editor of Le Monde diplomatique , and retired at end of 2015. He then cofounded the website Orient XXI.

Personal life

His biological father was Henri Curiel, an Italian Jew and communist activist who later became an Egyptian citizen. After being exiled from Egypt in 1950 because of his communist activities, Curiel settled in France.

The Palestinian Declaration of Independence formally established the State of Palestine, and was written by Palestinian poet Mahmoud Darwish and proclaimed by Yasser Arafat on 15 November 1988 in Algiers, Algeria. It had previously been adopted by the Palestinian National Council (PNC), the legislative body of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), by a vote of 253 in favour, 46 against, and 10 abstaining. It was read at the closing session of the 19th PNC to a standing ovation. Upon completing the reading of the declaration, Arafat, as Chairman of the PLO, assumed the title of President of Palestine. In April 1989, the PLO Central Council elected Arafat as the first President of the State of Palestine.

Chosen and Excluded – The Hate on Jews in Europe is a German and French documentary film from Joachim Schroeder and Sophie Hafner about Antisemitism in Europe, the Middle East and inside the Muslim Community. It was commissioned by the public Franco-German TV network ARTE in 2015. It got attention in German and international media after the initial refusal of the two public TV networks ARTE and WDR to release the film. Both claimed the documentary did not live up to their standards. During the ongoing public discussion, the German tabloid Bild decided to show the documentary online for 24 hours without having the rights. Eventually, both, ARD and ARTE, broadcast the documentary on 21 June 2017.

Beyond the Frontlines: Resistance and Resilience in Palestine is a 2017 documentary film written, directed and produced by French director Alexandra Dols. Featuring Palestinian women and men, among others psychiatrist and writer Samah Jabr, it looks at the consequences of the Israeli occupation on the mental health of the Palestinian people, issues of colonial trauma and alienation and disalienation. It won the Sunbird Award for Best Documentary Film at the Days of Cinema film festival in Palestine.

The Vanguard of the Maani Army – VMA (MDJ) was a predominantly Druze splinter faction of the Lebanese Army that came to play a role in the 1975–77 phase of the Lebanese Civil War.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Naim Khader</span> Palestinian Arab diplomat (1939–1981)

Naim Khader (1939–1981) was the representative of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) in Belgium. He was assassinated in Brussels on 1 June 1981. The assassination remains unsolved.
