Alexei "Alex" Severinsky is an American engineer immigrated from post-Soviet Russia. He graduated with Master of Science degree from the Kharkiv National University of Radioelectronics in 1967 and got his Candidate of Science degree (Ph.D.) in Electrical Engineering from Institute for Precision Measurements in Radioelectronics and Physics in Moscow in 1975. Before the emigration he worked in Kharkiv, Ukraine. Severinsky emigrated from the Soviet Union to the United States in 1978. [1]
Severinsky is the inventor of the Hyperdrive power-amplified internal combustion engine power train. He patented this invention in 1994. The system is used in hybrid cars, in particular in the Toyota Prius. Severinsky is the founder and Chairman Emeritus of Paice, which licenses the Hyperdrive to hybrid vehicle manufacturers. [2] On August 16, 2006, a U.S. federal judge required Toyota to pay Alex Severinsky $25 for every Prius II, Highlander Hybrid and Lexus RX400h hybrid sold in the United States. On 21 July 2010 Severinsky and Toyota agreed on a settlement. [3]
Severinsky is also the inventor of the Fuelcor technology - a patented technology for recycling carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide emissions into usable fuel products. [4] Fuelcor's technology is marketed by Fuelcor International, LLC, a Virginia-based intellectual property development and management company, which was founded after Severinsky resigned as CEO of Paice in 2006. Severinsky holds 30 patents in the United States with numerous patent filings in countries worldwide. Severinsky is a Senior Member of Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).

First introduced on the Prius, the technology is an option on several other Toyota and Lexus vehicles and has been adapted for the electric drive system of the hydrogen-powered Mirai, and for a plug-in hybrid version of the Prius. Previously, Toyota also licensed its HSD technology to Nissan for use in its Nissan Altima Hybrid. Its parts supplier Aisin offers similar hybrid transmissions to other car companies.

The Toyota Prius (XW10) is a subcompact hybrid car that was produced by Toyota between 1997 and 2003 in Japan. The XW10 is divided into the NHW10 and its NHW11 counterpart, both of which represent the first generation of Prius series. The Toyota Prius is the first mass-produced hybrid car, and was released 2 years ahead of other manufacturers. While the NHW10 was available exclusively to Japan, it was subsequently introduced to worldwide markets in September 2000 with the NHW11. Toyota sold about 123,000 first generation Prius. Fritz Karl Preikschat was a German, later American, electrical and telecommunications engineer and inventor. He had more than three German patents and more than 23 U.S. patents, including a dot matrix teletypewriter, a blind-landing system for airports (1965), a phased array system for satellite communications (1971), a hybrid car system (1982), and a scanning laser diode microscope for particle analysis (1989). He was the only engineer to work on both sides of the Space Race: a lab manager for NII-88 in Soviet Union (1946–1952) and a lead engineer for the Space division of Boeing (1960s).
