Algeria has an embassy in Doha. The Algerian ambassador is Mustafa Boutoura. [1] Qatar has an embassy in Algiers. [2] The Qatari ambassador is Abdulaziz Ali Al Naama. [3]

Both countries are members of the Arab League, and traditionally they have a friendly relations, although Algeria has some diplomatic disputes with Qatar over Al Jazeera's coverage of Algeria. [4]

Current relations

Libyan crisis

Amidst the crisis of Libya, Algeria's neighbor, and Qatar's involvement, Algeria has expressed significant concerns of Libya's insecurity and has shared opposition to Qatar's adventure in Libya, although not directly. There has been significant political arguments between two countries. [5]

Algeria was believed to have been trying to expand Algerian influences of their own against Qatar's interests, with the clear evidence in Mali when Algeria has gained significant upper hands during the Northern Mali conflict at the expense of Qatar.

Syrian and Yemeni Civil Wars

Algeria and Qatar have different views, when Algeria opposes any type of arming for the rebels in Syria while Qatar firmly supports the opposition in Syria; so the same thing happens in Yemen.[ citation needed ]

In 2016, Qatar and Saudi Arabia's defense ministers both respectively visited Algeria discussing for Algeria's military commitment in the Saudi-led coalition, but Algeria had refused to participate although they might provide intelligences for the Saudi and Qatar militaries in Yemen. [6]

In both occasions, Algeria called for mediations between parties involved.

2017 Qatar diplomatic crisis

Algeria has stayed neutral and called for mediations between Qatar and Saudi Arabia, and takes a firmly independent step in the situation. [7] Giving the historical issues with both Qatar and Saudi Arabia, Algeria doesn't favor anyone in the conflict.

Qatar has appreciated Algeria's stance and called it "honorable". [8]

COVID-19 pandemic

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Qatar sent urgent medical assistance, including respirators, and ventilators to Algeria in October 2021. [9] [10]

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Qatar–Turkey relations</span> Bilateral relations

The State of Qatar and the Republic of Turkey established bilateral relations in 1972. There has been ongoing cooperation and dialogue in regional and international issues since the 2010s, particularly in the Syrian Civil War and the Egyptian Crisis. Both countries also support the same groups in post-Gaddafi Libya. Most recently, Turkey provided diplomatic and food support to Qatar during the 2017 Qatar diplomatic crisis. Some political analysts claim that bilateral relations are mostly limited to political and military affinity, referring to the low trade volume, lack of trade agreements and absence of Turkish think tanks in Qatar.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is the ministry responsible for handling Qatar's external relations as well as its diplomatic efforts, including the maintenance of its diplomatic missions across the globe. The current minister is Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani.

Qatar has been accused of allowing terror financiers to operate within its borders, which has been one of the justifications for the Qatar diplomatic crisis that started in 2017 and ended in 2021. In 2014, David S. Cohen, then United States Under Secretary of the Treasury for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence, accused Qatari authorities of allowing financiers who were on international blacklists to live freely in the country: "There are U.S.- and UN-designated terrorist financiers in Qatar that have not been acted against under Qatari law." Accusations come from a wide variety of sources including intelligence reports, government officials, and journalists.

The Qatar diplomatic crisis was a high-profile incident involving the deterioration of ties between Qatar and the Arab League between 2017 and 2021. It began when Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, and Egypt severed their bilateral relations with Qatar and subsequently banned Qatar-registered aircraft and Qatari ships from utilizing their sovereign territory by air, land, and sea; this involved the Saudis' closure of Qatar's only land crossing, initiating a de facto blockade of the country. Tensions between the two sides came to a close in January 2021, following a resolution between the Saudis and the Qataris.

Saudi Arabia–Qatar relations refers to the current and historical relationship between the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the State of Qatar. Prior to 2017, the two countries maintained cordial ties. Qatar was mainly subservient to Saudi Arabia in matters relating to foreign policy. Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani's assumption of power saw Qatar reclaim its sovereignty in foreign affairs, often diverging from Saudi Arabia on many geopolitical issues. In 1996, the Qatari government launched Al Jazeera in a bid to consolidate soft power. One of the most watched news stations in the Arab world, Al Jazeera proved to be a wedge in the two's bilateral relations as it routinely criticized Saudi Arabia's ruler. The network also provided a platform for Islamist groups which are considered a threat to Saudi Arabia's monarchy.

The Kingdom of Morocco and the State of Qatar formed diplomatic relations in 1972. There is substantial economic cooperation between the two countries, with Qatar being one of the largest foreign investors in Morocco. A $2 billion joint venture between Qatar's sovereign wealth fund and Morocco was established in 2011.

Qatar–Tunisia relations are the bilateral relations between the State of Qatar and the Republic of Tunisia. Qatar is a heavy investor in Tunisia, and ranks second globally in terms of foreign direct investments in Tunisia. The two enjoyed close political relations during the Ennahda Movement's assumption of power in Tunisia in 2011. Both countries are members of the Arab League, Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, Non-Aligned Movement, Group of 77 and the United Nations.

The Qatar–Saudi Arabia diplomatic conflict refers to the ongoing struggle for regional influence between Qatar and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA), both of which are members of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC). It is sometimes called the New Arab Cold War. Bilateral relations are especially strained since the beginning of the Arab Spring, that left a power vacuum both states sought to fill, with Qatar being supportive of the revolutionary wave and Saudi Arabia opposing it. Both states are allies of the United States, and have avoided direct conflict with one another.
