The track originally had Akon as a featured artist and was performed by rapper Plies from Fort Myers, Florida, but his verse was replaced by Snoop's and his name has been left out from the writers' credits. This song was #88 on MTV Asia's list of Top 100 Hits of 2007. The song was nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Rap/Sung Collaboration at the 50th Grammy Awards in 2008.

The program is formatted on the successful Dutch television series Ali B op volle toeren that had premiered on the Dutch TROS channel. The first German series ran from 30 August 2011 until 11 October 2011 and included 7 episodes.

The program brings in two artists from pop and hip hop traditions, in an attempt to make via remakes and covers of well-known earlier hits, new crossover hits that fusions between various genres of music. The inaugural season of the program was broadcast on Eén Belgian Flemish station. It is an adaptation of original series of shows done on Dutch television station TROS and hosted by fellow Moroccan-Dutch artist Ali B and entitled Ali B op volle toeren. There is also a German adaptation on VOX called "Cover My Song" and hosted by Dennis Lisk.

"Mo Money Mo Problems" contains a sample and an interpolation of "I'm Coming Out" by Diana Ross, for which Bernard Edwards and Nile Rodgers are also credited as songwriters; the sampled portions are heard in the production, while the hook is interpolative and performed by Kelly Price in an uncredited appearance.
