The Aligarh murder case involved the death of a two-year-old girl in the Aligarh district of Uttar Pradesh, India. She went missing on 30 May 2019, and her body was found three days later in a garbage dump. Police stated that the girl was abducted and killed in a form of revenge crime over a monetary dispute. The murder caused widespread outrage, which led to the spread of misinformation on social media as rumours were circulated.
Zahid Ali and Aslam were arrested on 4 June 2019 and confessed to the killing over an unpaid loan of 10,000 rupees. Zahid's wife, Shabusta and brother Mehdi Hasan were arrested on 8 June 2019 for assisting the crime.
On 30 May in Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh, a 2+1⁄2-year-old girl went missing. the next day a police report was filed. On 2 June, the body of the child was found in a garbage dump. On 5 June, the police claimed that the girl was abducted and killed in a revenge crime over a monetary dispute of her father. [1]
The family said that the primary accused, Zahid Ali, had threatened them over a monetary dispute. Police investigations have revealed Zahid lured the girl and killed her with the help of Aslam in the latter's home. The body was then dumped in a dupatta belonging to his wife Shagufta. [2]
Three days after the victim was abducted, her body was carried by stray dogs out of a dumping ground on 2 June 2019 in Aligarh, [3] and were eating at her body when locals found her. [4] Widespread condemnation and outrage sparked on social media via hashtags and tweets that included misinformation. [5] [6]
ADG (Law and Order) Anand Kumar told ANI, "It is a shocking incident for all of us. The UP Police has taken up this case in right earnest. We will leave no stone unturned in the matter. We hope that the entire case will be worked out very soon." [1]
Although the police ruled out rape, vaginal swabs were sent for testing. [7] SSP of police Akash Kulhari said cause of death were "ante-mortem" injuries and was confirmed by post-mortem due to choking. [8] [9] Questions have been raised over the police investigation. [10] The family of the victim has claimed that she was raped. [11]
On 7 June, the police gave the investigation to a six-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) to enquire into death of the child. ADG (Law and Order) Anand Kumar said, "A SIT has been formed under the Superintendent of Police, Rural Area (SPRA). A forensic science team, the Special Operations Group (SOG) and a team of experts have been included in the SIT to conduct the investigation on a fast-track basis. The POCSO Act will also be there in the case..." [1] [12]
The Aligarh police stated that POCSO had been applied though the post-mortem didn't find evidence of rape. It denied reports of the eyes of the victim being gouged out and invoked the National Security Act against the accused due to the seriousness of the crime. [13]
The investigation of the forensic science laboratory of Agra did not come to any conclusion on sexual assault, so the police applied for permission to consult another forensic science laboratory in Lucknow and the Central Forensic Science Laboratory in Chandigarh. The report stated that the rotting of the skin gave the perception that her eyes were gouged out and her arm had been detached from the body due to being eaten at by insects. She had also suffered a fracture in her left leg and her rib bones had pierced the chest. [14]
Zahid Ali and Aslam were arrested on 4 June and confessed to killing the victim over the unpaid loan of 10,000 rupees. Zahid's wife Shabusta and his brother Mehdi Hasan were arrested on 8 June for "criminal conspiracy" and "causing disappearance of evidence of offence". [15] [16] [17]
The 2006 Noida serial murders occurred in the house of businessman Moninder Singh Pandher in Sector-31, Noida near Nithari village, Uttar Pradesh, India between 2005 and 2006. Moninder Singh was convicted in two out of the five cases against him and his servant Surinder Koli who aided him was convicted in 10 out of the 16 cases against him. Both were sentenced to death.
Hannah Foster was a 17-year-old British student who was abducted after a night out in Southampton in mid-March 2003. Murdered by Indian immigrant Maninder Pal Singh Kohli, who had come to the UK in 1993, her body was found in nearby West End, Hampshire two days after she disappeared. A few days later, Kohli fled to his family's home in Chandigarh, India, later assuming a new identity in Darjeeling, but was finally extradited in 2007. He was found guilty of the crime in 2008, and was sentenced to life imprisonment with a 24-year non-parole period.

The Shopian rape and murder case, also known as Asiya, Neelofar case, is the abduction, rape and murder case of two young women allegedly by the Indian Army. In mysterious circumstances between 29 and 30 May 2009 at Bongam, Shopian district in the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir. Two women who were sisters-in-law went missing from their orchard on the way home on 29 May 2009. The next morning, their bodies were found both one kilometer apart. Local police rejected the allegations saying that the women appeared to have drowned in a stream.
Colette Aram was a 16-year-old British trainee hairdresser who was abducted, raped and strangled as she walked from her home to her boyfriend's house in Keyworth, Nottinghamshire, on 30 October 1983. The murder was the first case to be featured on the BBC television series Crimewatch when it began in June 1984. However, despite receiving over 400 calls as a result of the programme, Nottinghamshire Police were unable to catch the killer, and it was not until 2008 and following advances in forensic technology that police were able to develop a DNA profile of the suspect. Paul Stewart Hutchinson was finally charged with the murder in April 2009. He initially pleaded not guilty, but changed his plea to guilty on 21 December 2009 and was sentenced to life imprisonment on 25 January 2010. Following his sentencing, Crimewatch ran a recap of the murder and investigation on BBC TV on 27 January 2010 exposing several inaccuracies reported in the press about his background, notably a lie about being a psychology graduate.
On 7 June 2013, a 20-year-old college student was abducted, gang-raped and murdered in Kamduni village, 16km from Barasat, North 24 Parganas district about 20km from main Kolkata. In January 2016 the accused were sentenced to death and life imprisonment.

The Kathua rape case involved the abduction, gang rape, and murder of an 8-year-old Muslim girl, Asifa Bano, by six men and a juvenile, in January 2018 in the Rasana village near Kathua in Jammu and Kashmir, India. A chargesheet for the case was filed, the accused were arrested and the trial began in Kathua on 16 April 2018. The victim belonged to the nomadic Bakarwal community. She disappeared for a week before her body was discovered by the villagers a kilometer away from the village. The incident made national news when charges were filed against eight men in April 2018. The arrests of the accused led to protests by the Panthers Party and other local groups, who sought justice for the victim. A protest in support of the accused men was attended by two ministers from the Bharatiya Janata Party, both of whom later resigned. The gang rape and murder, as well as the support the accused received, sparked widespread outrage in India and world-wide.
The Unnao rape case refers to the gang rape of a 17-year-old girl on 4 June 2017 in Unnao, Uttar Pradesh, India. On 9 December 2019, the rape victim was set on fire on her way to testify against her alleged rapists and died of her injuries with 90% burns. On 16 December 2019, former BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar was convicted for the rape on 20 December 2019 and sentenced to life imprisonment. Further, Sengar was found guilty in the death of the girl's father in judicial custody.
Kuldeep Singh Sengar is an Indian politician and former member of Legislative Assembly belonging to the Bhartiya Janta Party from Unnao district, Uttar Pradesh who has been convicted of rape, murder, attempt to murder, criminal conspiracy and criminal intimidation. He is the main defendant in the Unnao rape case and was booked under the POCSO Act. He is also accused of killing three people, including the victim's father in police custody and later her aunts by a conspired truck accident. A Delhi District and Sessions Court upheld an investigation conducted by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) that had ruled out any foul play in the Unnao rape survivor's accident in 2019.
Muzaffarpur Shelter Home Rape case refers to a shelter home that ran under a non-governmental organization called "Sewa Sankalp Evam Vikas Samiti" at Muzaffarpur, Bihar, where cases of sexual abuse, rape and torture were reported. In a medical examination, sexual abuse of 34 out of 42 of the girls living at the shelter was confirmed.
In November 2019, the gang rape and murder of a 26-year-old veterinary doctor in Shamshabad, near Hyderabad, sparked outrage across India. Her body was found in Shadnagar on 28 November 2019, the day after she was murdered. Four suspects were arrested and, according to the Cyberabad Metropolitan Police, confessed to having raped and killed the doctor.
The 2016 Ariyalur gang rape refers to the gang rape and murder of a pregnant 17-year-old minor Dalit girl, Nandhini, by a Hindu Munnani Union secretary and three of his friends in December 2016 in Ariyalur District. The men gang raped her and pulled out the fetus from her womb after cutting her genitalia with a blade. Nandhini died at the spot due to excessive bleeding. The men then threw her body into a nearby well. Her body was found in the well with her hands tied in a decomposed state, stripped of her clothes and jewellery.
On 14 September 2020, a 19-year-old Dalit woman was allegedly gang-raped in Hathras district, Uttar Pradesh, India, by four upper caste men. She died two weeks later in a Delhi hospital.
On 4 April 2022, a 14-year-old girl was raped in Hanskhali of Nadia district, West Bengal, India. The main accused are Brojogopali Gayali and his friends. Notably they are associated with TMC.
The Great Basin Murders is the name given to a series of murders of at least nine women committed between 1983 and 1997 across the states of Wyoming, Utah, Nevada and Idaho. It derives its name from the Great Basin geographical area, as most of the victims had their bodies dumped near interstate highways that pass through it.
In May 2022, the gang rape of a 17-year-old girl in Road no. 44, Jubilee Hills, Hyderabad, sparked outrage across Telangana and India. The minor girl returning home after attending a get-together at Amnesia pub was gang-raped by six persons, including five minors in Jubilee Hills area of the State capital. All the accused were arrested by police from their separate hideouts.
