Alison Curtis (born 1 November 1977 in Kingston, Ontario, Canada) is a presenter of radio on Irish radio station Today FM [1] She currently presents her own show, "Saturday Breakfast with Alison Curtis" on Today FM which airs every Saturday from 7am to 10am and since July 2016, has also presented "Sunday Breakfast with Alison Curtis" which airs every Sunday from 7am to 9am. She previously presented The Last Splash on Sunday nights and The Alison Curtis Show.

The Last Splash and, later, The Alison Curtis Show, earned Curtis her three Best DJ Meteor nominations, though she narrowly lost out on the first two occasions to her Today FM colleague Ray D'Arcy and lost again in 2009, this time to her Today FM colleague Ray Foley. Curtis has written for Hot Press .

She is married to Anton Hegarty, the former bassist for Future Kings of Spain with whom she has a daughter.

Early life

Curtis was born and raised in Kingston, Ontario, but spent her formative years in Toronto. She graduated from the University of Toronto with an Honours BA in Anthropology. [2] Alongside her studies, she was actively involved in the Toronto indie scene, managing band nights, writing and editing the college paper, and drumming in a band called The Justice League.[ citation needed ]

Career

After graduating, Curtis moved to Ireland. There she met another Canadian, who was searching for presenters for the then pirate radio station, Phantom, provoking the reaction: "God, you talk a lot". [2] She was signed up and presented a drivetime show on the station. [2] Shortly after that in 1999, she joined Today FM, as the senior researcher on The Ian Dempsey Breakfast Show . [2] Working on a close-knit team, she was responsible for the show's features, guests and persuading Ian Dempsey to play a few "alternative" artists. She also spent 3 years presenting and producing her own drive time radio show on Phantom 105.2, a show that regularly featured live sessions from Irish and international artists as well as presenting The Last Splash on Sunday nights, she also presents an alternative music show from Monday to Thursday at 22:00.

She was on the panel of judges which helped decide the Choice Music Prize for Irish Album of the Year 2006. [3] She also served as the M.C./ master of ceremonies for the main awards ceremony for the Choice Music Prize before she was replaced by fellow Today FM colleague, Paul McLoone who from March 2012 to March or November 2016 served as M.C. for the prize ceremony of the Choice Music Prize with the Choice Music Prize later moving to be broadcast on RTE 2FM from 2017 onward.

She also presented and produced The Last Splash on Sunday nights, which initially had 7,000 listeners; this increased over time to 40,000. [2] She resigned from her post as producer of The Ian Dempsey Breakfast Show on the Friday before her new show (see below) began to air. [2] The first song she played on her new first show was "Can't Go Back" by Primal Scream. [2]

The new show was given to Curtis by the Today FM executives in 2008. The Alison Curtis Show staged its inaugural live Christmas special at Whelan's on 17 December 2008. Curtis and Ed Smith administered over three emerging acts – Cap Pas Cap, The Dirty Epics and Mick Flannery – as they did their respective things. [4] [5] [6] On 22 December 2008, based upon listener suggestions from the previous three weeks, they compiled a "time capsule" for 2008, containing the top ten items representing the twelve months of the year. [7] [8] A Valentine's Day special of the show took place at Whelan's Upstairs on 12 February 2009, featuring music from Duke Special, One Day International and Ann Scott. [9]

Personal life

When I first arrived, I made quite inappropriate jokes about it, going, 'I've never had only white friends before'. Growing up in Canada, you're growing up with a girl from Tokyo, a girl from Korea and a Jewish girl. So it's just different. That's the most immediate thing my sister notices.

Curtis has one sibling, her twin sister Karen, a social worker in Canada. [2] Their father died when they were fourteen and their mother died when they were nineteen. [2] Curtis met her long-term boyfriend, Anton Hegarty, bass guitarist in Future Kings of Spain, at a show in Whelan's. [2] They married in 2007 and now live in East Wall, Dublin. [2] Curtis and Hegarty own two identical black cats named Scout and Jem (after the characters in To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee). [2]

Curtis watches The Daily Show , Mad Men and dislikes Amy Winehouse and Britney Spears. [2] Her favourite Irish bands include Fight Like Apes, who she describes as "really talented... kind of rocky and metallic and their front girl is extremely watchable, almost going into Debbie Harry territory" and Hooray for Humans from Cork, who, according to Curtis, "are really cute, very poppy, almost Arcade Fire in the way they shout lyrics". [2]

Awards

While at Today FM, Curtis was nominated for the Best National DJ award on three occasions. On the first two occasions she narrowly lost out to her Today FM colleague Ray D'Arcy. [10] [11] Curtis was nominated in the Best National DJ category again in 2009. [12] She lost to another Today FM colleague, Ray Foley, on this occasion. [13]

He is also the lead vocalist/frontman of the Northern Irish pop-punk/new-wave band The Undertones, permanently replacing Feargal Sharkey when the band reunited for a series of live appearances in November 1999. It was a lighthearted show which discussed random topics.

She is known for her role on the TV show Republic of Telly, where she was a primary writer, and as co-host of the 2FM morning show Breakfast Republic with Bernard O'Shea and Keith Walsh. The Ray D'Arcy Show is the title given to two differing versions of a radio programme hosted by Ray D'Arcy, originally broadcast on Irish commercial radio station Today FM from the late 1990s until 2014 before transferring in February 2015 to the country's national public service broadcaster Raidió Teilifís Éireann-owned radio station RTÉ Radio 1. The show is broadcast each weekday afternoon.

The Kinetiks were a Meteor Award-nominated Irish rock, pop and indie musical ensemble from Dublin. They were vocalist and guitarist Gaz Harding, guitarist Sean Brennan, bassist Jim McGuire, and drummer Paul Donohoe. On 11 July 2008, they performed their biggest show thus far at Oxegen 2008 where they appeared second on the Green Room stage following Dirty Epics and prior to The Saw Doctors. The 2009 Meteor Music Awards ceremony took place on 17 March 2009 in the RDS Simmonscourt, Dublin. It was the ninth edition of Ireland's national music awards. The event was recorded and it aired on RTÉ Two on 18 March 2009. The awards show was hosted by television presenter Amanda Byram.

The 2005 Meteor Music Awards was hosted by comedian Ed Byrne at the Point Theatre on Thursday 24 February 2005. It was the fifth edition of Ireland's national music awards. A total of sixteen awards were presented at the ceremony, with the public eligible to vote in five categories. Snow Patrol won two awards, whilst Franz Ferdinand also picked up two awards. Paddy Casey and Juliet Turner were named Best Irish Male and Best Irish Female. The Chalets won Best New Band.

The 2008 Meteor Music Awards ceremony was held in the RDS Simmonscourt, Dublin, on Friday, 15 February 2008. Nineteen awards were presented. It was the eighth edition of the Republic of Ireland's national music awards. The event was later broadcast on RTÉ Two on Saturday, 16 February at 21:00 and was hosted by comedian Dara Ó Briain for the first time since 2004.

Raymond Foley is an Irish television host and radio presenter. Having worked at Dublin's 98FM and SPIN 1038 early in his career, Foley moved to Today FM in 2004. In 2006, he moved to midday and presented The Ray Foley Show, with sidekick JP Gilbourne and Adelle McDonnell. He hosted the breakfast slot on 98FM from October 2012 until December 2015. He also hosts TV dating show Take Me Out on TV3. On Friday 12 October 2012, Foley and JP announced on the show that both of them would be transferring to Today FM's sister station 98FM to present the breakfast show. They both have expressed how difficult the decision was for them, due to their fondness of their workmates and friends in Today FM. In 2022, Foley returned to Today FM with an afternoon show from 2pm - 4:30pm.
