Alkatrazz were an English heavy metal band from Maidstone, Kent. Formed in 1980 as part of the new wave of British heavy metal (NWOBHM) movement, the group originally featured lead vocalist Craig Stevens, guitarist and backing vocalist Bob Jenner, bassist Gary Bevan, and drummer and backing vocalist Nicko Parsons. In 1981 they signed to RCA Records and released their debut album Young Blood, followed by their second Radio 5 the following year. Shortly after the latter's release, Alkatrazz were dropped by the label. Bevan was briefly replaced by Phillip Tame, before the group disbanded in 1983.

History

Bob Jenner and Nicko Parsons originally performed as part of jazz fusion band Interface, before being persuaded by their manager Tony Tullett to "move to a more rock direction". [1] After bringing in bassist Gary Bevan, the group began rehearsing with a second guitarist called Dave Saunders, before Craig Stevens was enlisted after responding to an advertisement in Melody Maker magazine. [1] The band took on the name Alkatrazz and spent "around six months" performing local shows before they were signed by RCA Records, following a performance on the BBC Radio Kent Rock Show. [1]

Alkatrazz recorded their debut album Young Blood at Magritte and Regents Park Studios in London, which was released in May 1981 preceded the month before by their first single "Rockin' High". [2] The band toured in promotion of the album alongside fellow NWOBHM acts Magnum, Tygers of Pan Tang and Samson. [3] [2] Shortly after touring with Samson, Alkatrazz returned to the studio to record their second album Radio 5, on which they adopted a sound more akin to American album-oriented rock (AOR) acts. [1] [4] The album featured guest appearances by Toni Childs and Mel Collins. [5]

Shortly after the release of Radio 5, however, Alkatrazz were dropped by RCA. [3] Bevan was fired from the band around the same time, which according to Stevens was "a knee jerk reaction born out of frustration", and was replaced by their sound engineer Phillip Tame. [1] Desipte several sources claiming that Parsons was replaced by former Iron Maiden drummer Clive Burr in 1983, [3] he was not. Burr joined an American group with a similar name. Bevan has commented on Burr reportedly having joined, "I have no idea where that one came from but I do think it's quite funny." [1] Shortly thereafter, Alkatrazz disbanded. [3]

The band's most recent line-up consists of Call, long-time bassist Michael Reilly, guitarists Donnie Lee Clark and Randy Harper and drummer Scott Thompson. Among the other notable past musicians to have played with Pure Prairie League include guitarists Vince Gill, Gary Burr and Curtis Wright.

Killers is the second studio album by English heavy metal band Iron Maiden. It was first released on 2 February 1981 in the United Kingdom by EMI Records and on 6 June in the United States by Harvest and Capitol Records. The album was their first with guitarist Adrian Smith, and their last with vocalist Paul Di'Anno, who was fired after problems with his stage performances arose due to his alcohol and cocaine use. Samson (band) British heavy metal band

Samson were a British heavy metal band formed in 1977 by guitarist and vocalist Paul Samson. They are best known for their first three albums with future Iron Maiden singer Bruce Dickinson, then known as "Bruce Bruce", and drummer Thunderstick, who wore a leather mask and performed on stage in a metal cage. Drummer Clive Burr was also a member of the band, both before and after his tenure with Iron Maiden. Drummer Mel Gaynor had a successful music career being a member of Simple Minds for over 20 years. Dickinson's replacement on vocals, Nicky Moore, performed with Samson throughout the mid-1980s and again from the late 1990s onwards. Samson were a part of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal.

Tygers of Pan Tang British heavy metal band

Tygers of Pan Tang are an English heavy metal band who are part of the new wave of British heavy metal movement. They formed in 1978 in Whitley Bay, England, and were active until 1987. The band reformed in 1999 and continue to record and perform. The name is derived from Pan Tang, a fictional archipelago in Michael Moorcock's Elric of Melniboné fantasy series whose wizards keep tigers as pets.

Running Free 1980 single by Iron Maiden

"Running Free" is the debut single by Iron Maiden, released on 8 February 1980 on the 7" 45 rpm vinyl record format. It was written by Steve Harris and Paul Di'Anno. The song appears as the third track on the band's debut album Iron Maiden. In 1985, a live version of the song was released as the first single from Live After Death. In 1990, the original single was reissued on CD and 12" vinyl as part of The First Ten Years box, in which it was combined with the band's next single, "Sanctuary". The 1985 live single was also released as part of this box set, combined with 1985's "Run to the Hills".
