All India Federation of Women Lawyers is an association of Indian women lawyers. [1] The federation was established in 2007. [2] It is a registered association under the Society's Registration Act. The federation is affiliated with International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA).
Mrs. Sheela Anish was the Founder President of the federation and now she is the Director of International Federation of Women Lawyers. [4] Other past presidents have included VP Seemandini, M Bhaskaralakshmi, K Santhakumari, Ami Yagnik and Indrayani Patani. [5] The current president is Hemalata Mahishi a practising lawyer. Many past presidents and other office bearers have been Presidents of their respective state-based Federations of Women Lawyers.
Past conferences of the Federation included the Asia Woman Lawyers Conference in Bangalore, September 2007; and the AIFWL National Conferences in Kochi (December 2009), Hyderabad (January 2011), Chennai (January 2012), Mumbai (December 2013), Bangalore (November 2014), and Ahmedabad (September 2017). The federation organised the Asia Woman Lawyers Conference in Bangalore in September 2007, [7] in which Chief Justice of India K. G. Balakrishnan and Chief Justice of Karnataka Cyriac Joseph were present. [8] The Federation, jointly with National Legal Service Authority, organised one seminar on Girl Child on 16 March 2008 and it was a captured on the cover page of the media and the seminar was noticed by the public. The members of AIFWL represented in the International Woman Lawyer's Conference held in Italy in the year 2008. At the National Conference held in Kochi in 2009, V.P.Seemandini was the then president of the federation. The conference was held in Le Meridien International Convention Center. President of India Pratibha Devisingh Patil was the Chief Guest in that conference. [9] [10] In 2012, when the National Conference was held in Chennai, Advocate K.Santhakumari was the President of the Federation. [11]
Kalakshetra Foundation, formerly simply Kalakshetra, is an arts and cultural academy dedicated to the preservation of traditional values in Indian art and crafts, especially in the field of Bharatanatyam dance and Gandharvaveda music. Based in Chennai, India, the academy was founded in January 1936 by Rukmini Devi Arundale and her husband George Arundale. Under Arundale's guidance, the institution achieved national and international recognition for its unique style and perfectionism. In 1962, Kalakshetra moved to a new campus in Besant Nagar, Chennai, occupying 40 hectares of land.

All India Democratic Women's Association (AIDWA) is a women's organisation committed to achieving democracy, equality and women's emancipation. It has an organizational presence in 23 states in India, with a current membership of more than 11 million. About two-thirds of the organisation's strength is derived from poor rural and urban women. It was founded in 1981 as a national level mass organisation of women. It is also the women's wing of the Communist Party of India (Marxist).
Udupi Ramachandra Rao was an Indian space scientist and chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation. He was also the Chairman of the Governing Council of the Physical Research Laboratory at Ahmedabad and Nehru Planetarium at Bengaluru and chancellor of the Indian Institute for Space Science and Technology (IIST) at Thiruvananthapuram. He is known as "The Satellite Man of India". He pioneered India's first satellite launch Aryabhata in 1975.
Rukmini Devi Arundale was an Indian theosophist, dancer and choreographer of the Indian classical dance form of Bharatanatyam, and an activist for animal welfare.
Homosexuality in India has been a subject of discussion from ancient times to modern times. Hindu texts have taken various positions regarding homosexual characters and themes. The ancient Indian text Kamasutra written by Vātsyāyana dedicates a complete chapter on erotic homosexual behaviour. Historical literary evidence indicates that homosexuality has been prevalent across the Indian subcontinent throughout history, and that homosexuals were not necessarily considered inferior in any way until about 18th century during British colonial rule. However, under the Islamic law of Fatawa 'Alamgiri during the Mughal Empire, male homosexual intercourse was punishable by flogging or stoning for a Muslim. On 6 September 2018, a 5-judge constitutional bench of Supreme Court of India invalidated part of Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code, hence making homosexuality legal in India. In striking down the colonial-era law that made gay sex punishable by up to 10 years in prison, one judge said the landmark decision would "pave the way for a better future." This ruling also applied to Jammu and Kashmir state under Article 141 of the Constitution of India and Delhi Agreement 1952, as section 377 of IPC and Ranbir Penal Code is prima materia and Judicial Pronouncements were extended to Jammu and Kashmir.
Santhi Soundarajan is a track and field athlete from Tamil Nadu, India. She is the winner of 12 international medals for India and around 50 medals for her home state of Tamil Nadu. Shanthi Soundarajan is the first Tamil woman to win a medal at the Asian Games. She competes in middle distance track events. She was stripped of a silver medal won at the 2006 Asian Games after failing a sex verification test which disputed her eligibility to participate in the women's competition.
Lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) rights in India have been evolving rapidly in recent years. However, Indian LGBT citizens still face social and legal difficulties not experienced by non-LGBT persons. The country has repealed its colonial-era laws that directly discriminated against homosexual and transgender identities and also explicitly interpreted Article 15 of the Constitution to prohibit discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity. But many legal protections have not been provided for, including same-sex marriage.

She is the first woman in India to have done her Ph.D. in Law on international terrorism, and is an expert on international terrorism and maritime law. She is a consultant on international law offering her expertise to academic departments that feature international relations programs. She was a founder member of the Centre for Security Analysis, Chennai. She is currently the President of InternationalLaw and Strategic Analysis Institute (ILSAI) in Chennai. Madhavan lives in Chennai.
