Aluna is a 2012 feature-length documentary film sequel to the 1990 BBC documentary From the Heart of The World: Elder Brother's Warning . The first documentary showed an ancient Kogi tribe civilisation (the Elder Brother) who emerge to offer their concern for people of the modern world (Younger Brother). Younger Brother is urged to change or suffer environmental disaster. After offering the warning, the Kogi retreat to their community hidden in the mountains of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, Colombia. [3] [4]
In the second documentary, the Kogis have re-emerged, realising that the importance of their warning was not grasped. [5] As well as warning Younger Brother, they have decided to share their understandings of how nature works in the belief that doing so will share their burden of healing the dying planet. [6]
Realising that their warning in 1990 was not fully grasped, the Kogis become more proactive. Even though their civilisation has never used wheels or created writing, they diligently study film cameras and train their own indigenous film crew. [7] [8] The Kogis ask Alan Ereira, whom they allowed to film their 1990 message, to assist. The Kogi Mamos decide that there will be "no more secrets": They want to demonstrate their planetary healing sciences in front of the cameras to the modern world and show visible and measurable results. [9] They also wish to teach other people how to conduct these sciences in order to heal the world. They speak with modern scientists in the belief that they have a different science to show them. [10]
To help convince the modern world of the importance preserving the planet, the Kogi demonstrate its interconnectivity. [11] A small group of Kogis travel to London to fetch 400 kilometres (250 miles) of gold thread, reportedly the longest ever made. [12] [13]
Mama Shibulata, one of the Kogis Mamos in the group, visits the observatory at the University of London where he meets Richard Ellis, the Steele Professor of Astronomy. Ellis is astounded by Shibulata's knowledge of both the Solar System and astronomical discoveries such as dark energy. [14]
After their return to Colombia with the gold thread, the Kogis conduct the demonstration. A group of leading modern scientists observe the results and find that the science of the Mamos may be at the 'cutting edge' [15]
"They lay the gold thread from one river estuary in Colombia to another in order to show how the destruction of river estuaries feeds back up the river in the end to destroy the source of the river. Showing the interconnectedness of everything on the earth, this was the key element in their task, the purpose of which was showing that the earth itself is a living body in which everything is interconnected, and damage to some of it is damage to all of it."— Alan Ereira. The 1990 documentary From the Heart of The World: Elder Brother's Warning was shown at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in 1992 and was seen to inspire delegates to take action. [17]
'Aluna' was produced in time for another important UN environmental conference, the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development held at Rio de Janeiro from 20–22 June 2012. Two Kogi Mamos were expected to attend the conference.
Originally the budget was set at £270,000. Alan Ereira got Bruce Parry interested in the project and Parry met with the Kogi, who agreed to the project. With Parry involved, the BBC offered £180,000 and Indus Films offered a further £20,000. [18] However, when Bruce Parry became 'committed to another project', the offer of funding from the BBC was withdrawn. [19] Therefore, Alan Ereira had to seek alternative funding. Some of this funding came from the British charity The Onaway Trust, which also helped fund Ereira's book on the Kogis, The Heart of the World. [20]
The Kogis had their own indigenous film crew, enabling the film to include previously unrecorded holy sites and practices that other film crews had been prohibited from seeing. [21] Throughout the collaboration, the Kogis exercised their autonomy while the film's director, Alan Ereira, looked forward to see what the indigenous crew had recorded. The Mamas took charge of what was going to be filmed and consulted Aluna through divinations. [22]
The collaboration between the indigenous crew and the European camera crews enabled Alan Ereira to bring a camera operator and a sound recordist to work with their indigenous counterparts in Colombia. [23]
Aluna was chosen to be shown at the 2012 Sheffield International Documentary Festival where it would have its World premiere. [24] [25]
The Chibchan languages make up a language family indigenous to the Isthmo-Colombian Area, which extends from eastern Honduras to northern Colombia and includes populations of these countries as well as Nicaragua, Costa Rica, and Panama. The name is derived from the name of an extinct language called Chibcha or Muysccubun, once spoken by the people who lived on the Altiplano Cundiboyacense of which the city of Bogotá was the southern capital at the time of the Spanish Conquista. However, genetic and linguistic data now indicate that the original heart of Chibchan languages and Chibchan-speaking peoples might not have been in Colombia, but in the area of the Costa Rica-Panama border, where the greatest variety of Chibchan languages has been identified.
Cannibal Holocaust is a 1980 Italian found footage cannibal horror film directed by Ruggero Deodato and written by Gianfranco Clerici. It stars Robert Kerman as Harold Monroe, an anthropologist from New York University who leads a rescue team into the Amazon rainforest to locate a crew of filmmakers. Played by Carl Gabriel Yorke, Francesca Ciardi, Perry Pirkanen, and Luca Barbareschi, the crew had gone missing while filming a documentary on local cannibal tribes. When the rescue team is only able to recover the crew's lost cans of film, an American television station wishes to broadcast the footage as a sensationalized television special. Upon viewing the reels, Monroe is appalled by the team's actions and objects to the station's intent to air the documentary.
Ciudad Perdida, Spanish for "Lost City," is the archaeological site of an ancient city in Colombia's Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, within the jurisdiction of the city of Santa Marta. This location is also known as "Teyuna" and "Buritaca 200". This city is believed to have been founded about 800 CE. If so, Ciudad Perdida predates Machu Picchu by about 650 years.
Gerardo Reichel-Dolmatoff was an Austrian anthropologist and archaeologist. He is known for his fieldwork among many different Amerindian cultures such as in the Amazonian tropical rainforests, and also among dozens of other indigenous groups in Colombia in the Caribbean Coast, as well as others living in the Pacific Coast, Llanos Orientales, and in the Andean and inter-Andean regions (Muisca) as well as in other areas of Colombia, and he also did research on campesino societies. For nearly six decades he advanced ethnographic and anthropological studies, as well as archeological research, and as a scholar was a prolific writer and public figure renowned as a staunch defender of indigenous peoples. Reichel-Dolmatoff has worked with other archaeologists and anthropologists such as Marianne Cardale de Schrimpff, Ana María Groot, Gonzalo Correal Urrego and others. He died 17 May 1994 in Colombia.
The Mystery of Mamo, also known as The Secret of Mamo, is a 1978 Japanese animated science fiction adventure action comedy film; it is the first animated film of the Lupin III franchise created by manga author Monkey Punch. The film was originally released in Japan as Lupin III but was later retitled to Lupin III: Lupin vs. the Clone to differentiate it from other elements of the franchise. Directed by Sōji Yoshikawa from a screenplay by Yoshikawa and cult pink film screenwriter Atsushi Yamatoya, the film was produced by animation studio Tokyo Movie Shinsha and distributed by Toho. The film's plot follows master thief Arsène Lupin III, who attempts to foil Mamo ― a wealthy and powerful recluse seeking immortality ― while trying to win the affections of his rival and would-be lover, Fujiko Mine.

LANSA Flight 508 was a Lockheed L-188A Electra turboprop, registered OB-R-941, operated as a scheduled domestic passenger flight by Lineas Aéreas Nacionales Sociedad Anonima (LANSA), which crashed in a thunderstorm en route from Lima to Pucallpa in Peru on 24 December 1971, killing 91 people — all six of its crew and 85 of its 86 passengers. It is the deadliest lightning strike disaster in history.
The Arhuaco are an indigenous people of Colombia. They are Chibchan-speaking people and descendants of the Tairona culture, concentrated in northern Colombia in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta.
The Kogi, or Cogui, or Kágaba, meaning "jaguar" in the Kogi language, are an indigenous group that resides in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta mountains in northern Colombia. Their culture has continued since the Pre-Columbian era.
Ross Kemp on Gangs is a documentary series that was broadcast on Sky 1 from 21 September 2004, until 6 January 2009. Hosted by actor Ross Kemp, the series follows Kemp and a film crew around the world as they interview members of gangs, locals who have been affected by gang violence, and the authorities who are attempting to combat the problem. Kemp then tries to establish contact within the gangs in an attempt to talk to their leader. A total of four series were filmed, three of which have since been released on DVD. María Berrío is a Colombian-born visual artist working in Brooklyn, New York. The LA Times wrote that Berrío's large-scale collage works, "meticulously crafted from layers of Japanese paper, reflect on cross-cultural connections and global migration seen through the prism of her own history." She is known for her use of Japanese print paper, which she cuts and tears to create collages with details painted in with watercolour. Berrío, who spent her childhood in Colombia and moved to the US in her teens, draws from Colombian folklore and South American literature. In her interview with The Georgia Review in 2019, the artist discusses the tradition of aluna of the Kogi people in her work Aluna (2017). Berrío's collages are characterised by representations of mainly women, who often stare back at the viewer.
