The American Society for Nutrition (ASN) is an American society for professional researchers and practitioners in the field of nutrition. ASN publishes four journals in the field of nutrition. [1] It has been criticized for its financial ties to the food and beverage industry. [2] [3]

History

In 1928 a group of United States biochemists and physiologists grouped together to form the first scientific society focused on nutrition, the American Institute for Nutrition. The Society held its first meeting at the Cornell Medical School in 1934. The society was renamed the American Society for Nutritional Sciences in 1996. [4]

In 2005, the American Society for Nutritional Sciences, the American Society for Clinical Nutrition (established 1961), and the Society for International Nutrition (established 1996) merged to form The American Society for Nutrition (ASN).[ citation needed ]

As of 2015, ASN has a membership of about 5,000. It is one of the constituent societies comprising the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology, a non-profit organization that is the principal umbrella organization of U.S. societies in the field of biological and medical research. In October 2010, the American College of Nutrition and American Society for Nutrition proposed to merge. [2] [ needs update ]

"Smart Choices" program

The ASN administered the "Smart Choices" food labelling program, [5] which was suspended in 2009 after criticism. [6]

Publications

ASN owns four academic journals, and occasionally uses them to self-publish content independent of the journal's editorial review process. [7] Some of the journals' editorial staff accept funding from food industry organizations. [2] [3] As of 2018, the ASN-run journals are printed by the Oxford University Press. [8]

In 2017 the ASN launched Current Developments in Nutrition as an open-access journal aiming for rapid publication and a broader range of topics than the ASN's other journals. [7] It publishes sponsored supplements, but these are reviewed by the journal. [9]

Corporate relationship concerns

The ASN has conflicting interests in taking funding from food industry marketing groups while providing unbiased information on nutrition; these conflicting interests have caused criticism and concerns of bias. [17] [18] ASN actions have also been criticized for being better-aligned with the nutritional advice of sponsors than the advice of the World Health Organization and other public health, public interest, and government organizations. [19] [11]

Long-time member Marion Nestle has voiced concerns about what she sees as a "too-cozy relationship with food company sponsors" within the organization. [20] In a 2015 report, Michele Simon also voiced concerns regarding corporate involvement with the society. [2] [21]

A dietitian, medical dietitian, or dietician is an expert in identifying and treating disease-related malnutrition and in conducting medical nutrition therapy, for example designing an enteral tube feeding regimen or mitigating the effects of cancer cachexia. Many dietitians work in hospitals and usually see specific patients where a nutritional assessment and intervention has been requested by a doctor or nurse, for example if a patient has lost their ability to swallow or requires artificial nutrition due to intestinal failure. Dietitians are regulated healthcare professionals licensed to assess, diagnose, and treat such problems. In the United Kingdom, dietitian is a 'protected title', meaning identifying yourself as a dietitian without appropriate education and registration is prohibited by law.

Uncle Tobys Australian food manufacturing company

The American Nutrition Association (ANA) is a 501(c)(3) charitable non-profit organization established to encourage the scientific investigation of nutrition and metabolism. The ANA publishes the Journal of the American Nutrition Association and hosts scientific conferences in the US and in Europe.

The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics is a 501(c)(6) trade association in the United States. With over 112,000 members, the association claims to be the largest organization of food and nutrition professionals. It has registered dietitian nutritionists (RDNs), nutrition and dietetics technicians registered (NDTRs), and other dietetics professionals as members. Founded in 1917 as the American Dietetic Association, the organization officially changed its name to the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics in 2012. According to the group's website, about 65% of its members are RDNs, and another 2% are NDTRs. The group's primary activities include providing testimony at hearings, lobbying the United States Congress and other governmental bodies, commenting on proposed regulations, and publishing statements on various topics pertaining to food and nutrition.

Marion Nestle American academic

Marion Nestle is an American academic. She was the Paulette Goddard professor of nutrition, food studies and public health at New York University. She was also a professor of Sociology at NYU and a visiting professor of nutritional sciences at Cornell University. Nestle's name is pronounced like the English verb "nestle", not like the name of the Swiss food conglomerate, to which she is unrelated.

International Life Sciences Institute

The International Life Sciences Institute (ILSI) is a global nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization headquartered in Washington, DC, United States that publishes peer-reviewed studies on nutrition and food safety. It was founded in 1978 by Alex Malaspina, a former Coca-Cola executive, and it is partially financed by its 300+ members, which includes food and chemical corporations like BASF, McDonald’s, Syngenta and Pepsi. In 2020, the organization's revenue was $10.1 million.

John O. Agwunobi

John O. Agwunobi is a Scottish-born Nigerian-American former public health official, pediatrician, and the current chief executive officer and executive chairman of Herbalife Nutrition. He was formerly senior vice-president of Walmart and president of the retailer's health and wellness business from 2007 to 2014.

George L. Blackburn

George L. Blackburn was the S. Daniel Abraham Professor of Nutrition and associate director of the Division of Nutrition at Harvard Medical School. He was also Director of the Center for the Study of Nutrition Medicine (CSNM) in the Roberta and Stephen R. Weiner Department of Surgery, and Director of the new Feihe Nutrition Laboratory at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC), Boston, Massachusetts.

The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition (AJCN) is a monthly peer-reviewed biomedical journal in the fields of dietetics and clinical nutrition.

K. Srinath Reddy

K. Srinath Reddy is the president of the Public Health Foundation of India and formerly headed the Department of Cardiology at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS).

Michele Simon

Michele Simon is a public health lawyer who has been researching and writing about food policy since 1996. Her work has been featured on CNBC, CBS News, The New York Times, San Francisco Chronicle, Chicago Tribune, Reuters, and Forbes. She has written extensively on the politics of food, and her book, Appetite for Profit: How the Food Industry Undermines Our Health and How to Fight Back, was published by Nation Books in 2006. Simon has also written extensively about alcohol policy.

Sugar Association American sugar industry trade association

The Sugar Association is a trade association for the sugar industry of the United States. Its members include nearly 142,000 growers, processors and refiners of sugar beet and sugarcane plants.

Sugar marketing

Sugar is heavily marketed both by sugar producers and the producers of sugary drinks and foods. Apart from direct marketing methods such as messaging on packaging, television ads, advergames, and product placement in setting like blogs, industry has worked to steer coverage of sugar-related health information in popular media, including news media and social media.
