The party's leaders and activists were involved in the anti-quota movement. According to the convener, the renaming symbolized an organizational transformation of the anti-aggression movement and an effort to establish more direct engagement with the people. [4]

Launch

On 28 January 2025, Tuesday, at 11:30 a.m., the name of the new political party “Amjanatar Dol” was officially announced at a press conference by the party's secretary, Md. Tarek Rahman. [4] [5]

History

In June 2023, the convener of Gono Odhikar Parishad, Reza Kibria, and member secretary Nurul Haque Nur dismissed each other. Supporters of Nurul Haque Nur held a national council on 10 July, where Nurul Haque Nur was elected president and Rashed Khan general secretary. [6]

Another faction continued activities with Reza Kibria as convener and Faruk Hasan as acting member secretary. On 26 September 2023, Reza Kibria applied to the Election Commission for registration of his faction of Gono Odhikar Parishad, but the application was rejected. [7]

On 31 December 2023, Reza Kibria left Gono Odhikar Parishad. Eight months later, he returned to the Reza faction and was declared chief adviser by the party's convener, retired Colonel Mia Mashiuzzaman.

In June 2024, efforts were made to reunite the two factions of the party. [8] On 31 August, grassroots activists issued an ultimatum demanding unity between the two factions. [9]

Eventually, Faruk Hasan, member secretary of the Reza faction, returned to Nurul Haque Nu r-led Gono Odhikar Parishad. On Tuesday, 31 December, this announcement was made at an emergency press conference at the central office in Bijoynagar, Dhaka.

On 21 December 2025, the Election Commission granted official registration to the party. [10]

Controversy

After the name change, similarities were noted with another political party named “A-Amjanata Party.” Following objections raised to the Election Commission, “Bangladesh A-Amjanata Party” later changed its name to “Bangladesh Amjanagan Party.” [11]
