Amy T. Koch (born October 8,1971) is an American politician and a former majority leader of the Minnesota Senate,where she represented portions of Hennepin and Wright counties. Koch,the first female Senate majority leader in state history,is also a regular commentator for Minnesota local media.
Koch grew up in Buffalo,Minnesota,graduating from Buffalo High School in 1990. After briefly attending Concordia College in Moorhead,Minnesota,Koch joined the United States Air Force in 1992. [2] While serving in the military,Koch met her former husband,Christopher,and gave birth to her daughter,Rachel.
Koch studied Russian at the Defense Language Institute in California,before being assigned to the National Security Agency in Fort Meade,Maryland. She graduated with honors at all stages of her military training and received the Joint Service Commendation Medal for her contribution to the intelligence community.
After receiving an honorable discharge from the Air Force in 1996,Koch returned to Buffalo,Minnesota and attended St. Cloud State University,where she earned a bachelor's degree in 1999. [3]
Koch has volunteered as an adult leader for 4-H and served as vice chair of the St. Francis Xavier Parish Council as well as liaison to the Education Advisory Board.
In 2016,Koch began working as a political strategist for Hylden Advocacy &Law in Minneapolis. [4]
Koch is a part owner of HBK Properties LLC in Buffalo. [5] [6] In 2013,Koch bought Maple Lake Bowl,a bowling alley just north of her home in Buffalo,MN. Koch owned and operated the bowling alley until she sold it in the summer of 2016. [7]
After leaving the military and returning to Minnesota,Koch became active in local Republican politics. In addition to serving on her local party unit board,Koch actively volunteered for former Congressman Mark Kennedy and former Secretary of State Mary Kiffmeyer. [8]
Koch was first elected to the Minnesota Senate in a 2005 special election,replacing Mark Ourada,who resigned months earlier. [9] She was re-elected in 2006 and 2010. Koch,a former assistant minority leader,was the first woman to serve as majority leader of the Minnesota Senate,and the first Republican to do so since party affiliation. [10]
On December 15,2011,in a surprise announcement,Koch said she would resign from her post as majority leader of the Minnesota Senate. [11] Republican state senators indicated Koch had an "inappropriate" relationship with a staffer,whose identity would later be confirmed as former state Senate aide Michael Brodkorb. [12] Koch later apologized and did not seek re-election to another term in the Minnesota Senate. [13]
David Howard Senjem is an American politician currently serving on the Olmsted County Board of Commissioners. He is a former member of the Minnesota Senate,serving in that body from 2003 to 2023. He led the Republican caucus as majority leader from 2011 to 2013. A moderate Republican,Senjem has crossed party lines on many occasions,notably environmental policy and women's issues. He represented District 25,which at the time included portions of Dodge and Olmsted counties in the southeastern part of the state. Much of the northern half of Rochester was in his district.

Claire A. Robling is a Minnesota politician and former member of the Minnesota Senate representing District 35,which included portions of Carver,Le Sueur,Scott and Sibley counties in the southern Twin Cities metropolitan area. A Republican,she was first elected to the Senate in 1996,and reelected in 2000,2002,2006 and 2010. She served as an assistant minority leader from 2003 to 2006.
Michelle Louise Helene Fischbach is an American attorney and politician who is the U.S. representative from Minnesota's 7th congressional district. The district,which is very rural,is Minnesota's largest by area and includes most of the western part of the state. A Republican,Fischbach served as the 49th lieutenant governor of Minnesota from 2018 until 2019. As of 2024,she is the last Republican to have held statewide office in Minnesota.
Linda Higgins is a Minnesota politician who represented the second district of Hennepin County as county commissioner from late 2012 to January 2019. Higgins is a former member of the Minnesota Senate representing District 58,which included portions of the city of Minneapolis in Hennepin County,which is in the Twin Cities metropolitan area. A Democrat,she was first elected to the Senate in 1996,and was re-elected in 2000,2002,2006 and 2010. She served as a majority whip from 2001 to 2006. In the fall of 2011,she announced that she would not seek reelection after the current term ended in 2012. However,when Hennepin County District 2 Commissioner Mark Stenglein announced in June 2012 that he would resign,Higgins decided to run for that position. On May 20,2012,she was endorsed by the DFL party for the position,and won the election in November. In 2014,she ran unopposed and was reelected. She served as the Vice-Chair of the County Board,and Chair of the Housing and Redevelopment Authority. She retired from the county board in January 2019.
Ann H. Rest is an American politician and President pro tempore of the Minnesota Senate. A member of the Minnesota Democratic–Farmer–Labor Party (DFL),she represents District 43 which includes portions of the western suburbs of Hennepin County in the Twin Cities metro area.
Julianne E. Ortman is a Minnesota politician and former member of the Minnesota Senate. A member of the Republican Party of Minnesota,she represented District 47,which included portions of Carver County in the southwestern Twin Cities metropolitan area. She was a candidate in the 2014 United States Senate election in Minnesota until she was eliminated at the state convention.
Geoff Michel is a Minnesota politician and former member of the Minnesota Senate who represented District 41,which included portions of the southwestern Twin Cities suburbs of Edina and Bloomington in Hennepin County. A Republican,he was first elected to the Senate in 2002,succeeding retiring Senator Roy Terwilliger,who represented the area as District 42 before the 2002 legislative redistricting. Michel was reelected in 2006 and 2010.

Saltzman is a Minnesota politician and a former member of the Minnesota Senate who represented District 56,which includes portions of Washington County in the eastern Twin Cities metropolitan area. A moderate Democrat,she was first elected to the Senate in 2006,but was unseated by Republican Ted Lillie in her 2010 re-election bid. She was a majority whip.

Facing multiple accusations of sexual misconduct,Franken announced on December 7,2017,that he would resign effective January 2,2018. Governor Mark Dayton appointed Franken's successor,Tina Smith,on December 13,2017,and she ran in the special election. This election coincided with a regularly scheduled U.S. Senate election for the Class 1 Senate seat,U.S. House elections,a gubernatorial election,State House elections,and other elections.
Kelly Louise Morrison is an American doctor and politician who was a member of the Minnesota Senate from 2023 to 2024. A member of the Minnesota Democratic–Farmer–Labor Party,Morrison represented District 45 in the western Twin Cities metropolitan area,which includes the cities of Minnetonka,Mound,Minnetrista,and Orono in Hennepin County. She served in the Minnesota House of Representatives from 2019 to 2023.
