Lawrence "Larry" J. Pogemiller (born September 18,1951) is an American politician from Minnesota,and the Commissioner of the Minnesota Office of Higher Education. [1] A member of the Minnesota Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party,he represented northeast Minneapolis districts in the Minnesota Legislature from 1981 to 2011,and served as the Senate's 9th majority leader from 2007 to 2011. As majority leader,he was chair of the Senate Rules Committee and its subcommittees,and also served on the Senate Tax Committee. [2] [3]
Pogemiller was born in Minneapolis and graduated from DeLaSalle High School in 1969. He was first elected to the Minnesota House of Representatives in 1980,serving as the representative of District 55A from 1981 to 1983. After serving one term,he was elected to the Senate in 1982,serving the old District 58 prior to the 1992 redistricting and,thereafter,District 59. He was re-elected in every general election. He was appointed Director of the Higher Education office in October 2011 by Governor of Minnesota Mark Dayton. [2] [4]
Pogemiller is known for his outspoken,assertive leadership style and his strategic thinking. [5] Reporter Tom Scheck of Minnesota Public Radio called him "a brilliant and combative political tactician who often speaks his mind". [6] Former Minnesota House Speaker Steve Sviggum called him "a very frustrating individual as he runs the clock past midnight all the time." Pogemiller had a rocky relationship with former Republican Governor Tim Pawlenty. [7]
Mark Brandt Dayton is an American politician who served as the 40th governor of Minnesota from 2011 to 2019. He was a United States Senator for Minnesota from 2001 to 2007,and the Minnesota State Auditor from 1991 to 1995. Steven A. Sviggum is a Minnesota politician,a member of the University of Minnesota Board of Regents,and an executive assistant to and communications director for the Republican caucus in the Minnesota Senate. Margaret Anderson Kelliher is an American politician,Director of the Minneapolis Department of Public Works,former Commissioner of the Minnesota Department of Transportation,and a former member of the Minnesota House of Representatives. A member of the Minnesota Democratic–Farmer–Labor Party,she represented District 60A,which includes portions of the city of Minneapolis in Hennepin County,located in the Twin Cities metropolitan area. First elected in 1999,she served until 2011,also serving as the Speaker from 2007 to 2011. She is the second woman to hold the position of House speaker. She was an unsuccessful candidate for the DFL nomination for Governor of Minnesota in the 2010 gubernatorial election,losing to former Senator Mark Dayton. Anderson left the Minnesota House of Representatives at the conclusion of her term in 2011 and re-entered politics when she ran for the DFL nomination to the U.S. House of Representatives in Minnesota's 5th congressional district in 2018,losing to Ilhan Omar. Since 2019 Kelliher,has worked in transportation management roles for the government,first as Commissioner of MnDOT,and later as Director of Public Works for the city of Minneapolis.
Satveer Singh Chaudhary is an American criminal and immigration lawyer. He is also a politician and a former member of the Minnesota State Senate and the Minnesota House of Representatives serving from 1996 to 2010. During his fourteen-year tenure,Chaudhary represented portions of Anoka and Ramsey counties in the northern Minneapolis and St Paul metropolitan area. The Senate District at the time of his departure from politics was known as Senate District 50. However,Chaudhary also represented the area in the Minnesota House from 1997-2000 as District 52A;and in the Senate from 2001 to 2002 as Senate District 52. While in office,Chaudhary served as a member of the Minnesota Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party,was the first Asian American legislator in Minnesota history. He was also the first South Asian senator in American history and for a time was the highest ranking political official of South Asian descent,as well as one of the youngest senators in that state's history.
Karen J. Clark is an American politician and former member of the Minnesota House of Representatives. A member of the Minnesota Democratic–Farmer–Labor Party (DFL),she represented District 62A,which included portions of the city of Minneapolis in the Twin Cities metropolitan area including portions of the Whittier,Phillips,Ventura Village,Seward,and Lyn-Lake neighborhoods. She was the longest serving openly lesbian member to serve in a state legislature in the United States. On December 8,2017,Clark announced in a press release that she would not be running for reelection.
David Joseph Tomassoni was an American politician who served in the Minnesota Legislature from 1993 to 2022. A former member of the Minnesota Democratic–Farmer–Labor Party (DFL),Tomassoni left the party to become independent in November 2020 and joined the Minnesota Senate Republican Caucus.

Limmer previously served in the Minnesota House of Representatives,and in 1998 he sought the Republican endorsement for Minnesota Secretary of State,losing to Mary Kiffmeyer. Kari Dziedzic is an American politician,and the Majority Leader of the Minnesota Senate. A member of the Minnesota Democratic–Farmer–Labor Party (DFL),she represents District 60,which includes portions of the city of Minneapolis in Hennepin County. Her district is also notable for including part of the University of Minnesota. In 2022,she was selected by her caucus to serve as Senate Majority Leader for the 93rd Minnesota Legislature. She previously served as executive assistant to U.S. Senator Paul Wellstone.

The 2018 United States Senate special election in Minnesota took place on November 6,2018,to elect a United States senator from Minnesota to replace incumbent Democratic Senator Al Franken until the regular expiration of the term on January 3,2021. Facing multiple accusations of sexual misconduct,Franken announced on December 7,2017,that he would resign effective January 2,2018. Governor Mark Dayton appointed Franken's successor,Tina Smith,on December 13,2017,and she ran in the special election. This election coincided with a regularly scheduled U.S. Senate election for the Class 1 Senate seat,U.S. House elections,a gubernatorial election,State House elections,and other elections.
